our pathetic potato patch, how did it do?
We planted gifted seed potatoes late in the season, directly into clay. as much as the plants (aboveground portions) were looking pathetic the whole time, our yield was surprising - better than worst, for sure!

Cleaning up after Ryobi made a mess!

yes yes, click bait title. I know - but not untruthful! The mess that we're cleaning up in tonight's fire was made by our Ryobi saw ;) No, I'm not sponsored - wish I was! James lit the correct pile this time :) The trees at risk all still have some degree of moisture in them, but no volatile oils like what evergreens possess, so I was confident in the safety of this night's burn :)

Mama guinea hatched out ten of her 22 eggs. The rest were all clear (never developed/infertile) with a few that had started but kicked the bucket early on. This was her second go, since her first clutch was a complete failure. What surprises me the most is the level of involvement and dedication by the fathers! We've never had guinea hatch out wild before, so this is truly unique for us!

Phase 2 is completed, and I'm pleased with the whole project! If you're wondering about the positions of the door latches, it is due to where the doors are not wanting to sit flush upon closing. The one door goes tight at the bottom, but has to be pushed in at the top, hence the latch being near the top; the opposite is true of the other door.

It's kind of a regular thing. I do feed the dogs, but the Kuvasz we keep on a feast or famine cycle because that is how they lived for 6000 years and if we breed again, we want that trait inherent in the resulting pups. You may have had better luck if you put the potatoes onto the clay, then buried them with some dirt or compost or mulch (prevents moisture loss through evaporation). Plants in that family love a lot of ambient moisture (not being sopping wet, but wet enough), and nutrients tend to flow downhill. If you save the big ones and replant them, they will grow a larger bunch the next year. A harvest is always wonderful when you expect the worst and it surprises you. For me that would be considered a decent sized one, haha. :)

      @AgnesMariaL 15 часов назад

      @@Ash-fd8ww Thanks, yes, I'm generally pretty good at growing potatoes, but we're still fairly new to this land and the soil is pretty much the opposite of what we had at our previous home. Our first year the potatoes were horrible, because we planted on flat ground - clay has no drainage, turns out! We will be using that same spot next year, and will be adding A LOT of organic matter!

    • @Ash-fd8ww
      @Ash-fd8ww 14 часов назад

      @@AgnesMariaL I'm not familiar with clay but I can share what I've seen. Clay for generations was considered the most fertile soil, but I hear it has to be cottled or it can become too good at its job. Gary Matsuoka here on YT will say that turning too much compost DIRECTLY into a clay soil can create a "root rot" environment, where if you do it in sand it wouldn't be so bad, but to instead use it like a top dressing. The reasoning is that Oxygen in the soil is eaten up very fast in these conditions, as how potting soils seem to stress plants much faster now; holding onto too much water and nutrient in the wrong places, for way too long causes stagnation. I hope some of these tips may help you like they did for me. 🌹🌹

    • @AgnesMariaL
      @AgnesMariaL 9 часов назад

      @@Ash-fd8ww Noted! Yes, I prefer to top-dress myself, but for other reasons. I think we'll be okay with mixing-in for next year's potato patch in the same location, because it is a slope so any deluges we get (which the few summer rains tend to be) will run off rather than overly-saturating the ground - this is my thought, anyway ;) We do experience extreme drought with extreme heat (high 30's/low 40's is normal for our microclimate) during the summers, so we plan for that when planting :)

    I have done bark tanning once before, but what's experimental about this pot of bark liquor is that the water used is not clean. We basically live in drought conditions throughout the warm months, so I pulled water from one of our dug reservoirs. With the clay soil, that water has clay in suspension and I don't know how it will affect the tanning process, but I will soon find out!

    Amazing that the ratter shows no hunting tendencies towards your rabbits.The rabbits' coats remind me of the Rex that dad breed that we had at home.

    • @AgnesMariaL
      @AgnesMariaL 2 месяца назад

      The ratter did get a young bunny that had escaped once, but it was bolting like a flash - as soon as she caught it, I called her off, but the damage had been done. I thought it was a rat at first, and she may have had the same thought... But the ratter, believe it or not, has formed strong bonds to some of the livestock and has actually taken a guardian position with respect to those animals! The pigs, for example, are "hers" - particularly baby piggies! We had a couple bottle babies that we had to bring in last winter, and I had Stella babysit them/keep them warm in our bed. Well, Arya came into the room, just to check things out, and the little ratter went full-on devil towards Arya!!! I was aghast, to say the least! Stella has also taken ownership/protectorship of the bunnies. One day I drove down to meet a customer with a bin of bunnies, and Stella insisted on coming along... While we were waiting, her best friend (Shawn and Elisha's little dog) was curious about what was in the bin, and proceeded to jump up into the back of my car - Stella intervened, with a menacing growl, saying, "NO! MY babies!" Today I had to look after mama Rex, as her incisors had become overgrown again. The ratter investigated her gently, and even gave nose kisses :) While I worked on trimming the teeth, Stella just laid by :) Being that somehow she has the protective mama instinct, she also respects the mama chicken who is raising a couple of baby duckies :) Stella gets too close, tiny little 4# hen fluffs up and attacks, Stella goes running for the hills 🤣🤣🤣 Yet Stella stood off, and was prepared to attack, a 90# dog when she was mama to a couple piglets! 🤣🤣🤣

      @AgnesMariaL 2 месяца назад

      Yes, I love those coat colours, hence why I picked those for breeding stock ❤ I put the boring ones up for sale this evening. But yeah, if you caught the video on phase 1, Stella jumped right into the hutch and had no bother with the bunnies! She's definitely a really cool little doggy, and versatile! We're very surprised, as she was also purchased sight unseen from Ontario :)

  • @AgnesMariaL
    @AgnesMariaL 2 месяца назад

    Speaking of return on investment: we are currently in for one bag of feed plus two bales of shavings (previous purchases of said supplies have already been offset by sales), outside of initial investment costs which is $60 for high-end buck plus three does on trade for future babies, and the $100 for the Rex rabbit colony (still under observation and in quarantine - some have "snuffles"). But if you consider that the rabbit we ate tonight is some like $20-$30 if you bought it at the grocery store, IF the grocery store was even sticking it (seems to be seasonal), and their rabbit is frozen, not fresh - then we're certainly doing well with the bun-buns! I can't even say how much I've spent on chickens over the years... Shipping in all those expensive hatching eggs etc, only to sell the odd dz of eggs for only $5... Yeah, I'm an idiot 🤣🤦

      @@AgnesMariaL Your reasoning is not sound. Following your reasoning, we should bleed people when they have a cold. The reason the FDA got into researching canning methods is because people were dying from botulism. Botulism is not a joke, it is a neurotoxin. It often times presents itself as a stroke. Also, if you get a "24 hour bug" is actually food poisoning. You are making a mistake, the only issue is how big a mistake. Do NOT feed this food to children. Food poisoning is more serious for young children.
