Use a iron door instead of signs, break one of the blocks on the side in a way that it's also covered by the painting, put a pressure plate there. Now you have to drop a item into the painting to he able to walk through while that one friend just walks into a "wall"

This only works on people who have lived under a rock. Any time someone see a ground level painting they assume its a covering something and try to get past it or break it. This works much better when used to trick someone into stepping into a trap.

Lava collection is insanely slow though, and running back and forth to the nether can be tedious- just mine the coal and use lava buckets later on when you want to set up an auto smelter.

You used to be able to craft it. It's nowhere near the rarest item in MineCraft, and it doesn't legitimately have Notch in its name. There are a bunch of places you can find it. But unfortunately because of how many places you can find it, you can somewhat easily get a stack of them.
