Hello Everybody,
I'm still posting videos from the past. I did a whole series of mixing my Michael Harding Watercolours with Schmincke French Ultramarine (PB29), and this is the last one. MH Purple Haze uses the same pigments as Daniel Smith Shadow Violet: PB29, PG18 and PO73.

Hello Everybody, I painted this colour wheel at the beginning of July, using Roman Szmal Lemon Yellow (PY61), Aquarius Red (PR214) and Phthalo Blue Turquoise Shade (PB15:4). Sensible watercolour painters use a palette to mix their pigments, but I'm clearly not one of them. I'm mixing everything right on the paper for added funkiness. I bought 14 of their colours as an alternative to the hugely expensive for me Schmincke and DS, I decanted them into half pans immediately on receiving them, sort of swatching them on the way

Hi Sonya, thanks for the video. Some really nice colours there but every time I think about ordering some I can’t bring myself to do it when I see the price😂. I always end up going back to see if Rosa or Roman Szmal have the same thing and if they do, I go with them. I’d like to see a comparison of your potters pinks when you have time to do it as I prefer a pinker one to the browner ones. I got the Brusho pots that I ordered so tonight’s the night, just hope I don’t make too much of a mess with them. Dee
They are really rather pricey, aren't they? I haven't bought any more since last summer. I will do a Potter's Pink comparison soon, promise! Good luck with the Brusho and not making a big mess, I hope you have fun Dee!
The PR233 looks rather brownish. Is this just my screen? The magenta could also be a Quin Viol. (PV19), but again, could just be my screen. Have you ever tried PB74 from Schminke? I love it. 😊
I've just posted a photo of the swatches in the community tab, that should give you a better idea what the colours look like. But the Potter's Pink is a bit on the brown side. I do have Schmincke's PB74 actually, but it's in a palette I don't have on my desk so I don't use it often. I really need to change that. Thanks for the reminder!
@@sonyaoart same! lol. I just re-discovered it and realized how much I like it. Actually it was an urban sketcher, who I follow, who uses it as his warm blue in a travel-pallet of only 10 colors. That gave me a different view on it. 😃 thanks, also for the foto. It is definitely a bit more pink on the it.😊

Congratulations on completing the challenge. Which series of prompts did you follow? I started with world watercolour month prompts and one of animals but then hubby' s health became a priority.
First of all, I hope your husband has fully recovered again! I very loosely followed the official prompts, but my main thing was just to select a photo from my camera roll every day and paint. Thank you!

Hi Sonya, I know what you mean about these mixes, they’re a bit uninspiring and I can’t think what they’d be useful for. I ordered a couple of Rosa tubes today and added 2 tubs of Brusho to the order. I thought it might be good for filling in areas of foliage when I’m left with blank spaces. Dee
@@doriswhyte1931 Honestly Dee I don’t think I’ve been this disappointed with a mix before. Ah well, it had to happen eventually. Your idea for Brusho sounds excellent, I’d love to hear if it works!
Sand? Beach?😊😊 Need to try it out myself. 😊 I also heard/read that colors should granulate more, when one mixes a granulating with a non-granulating color. Maybe that also is a reason, why they did not mix them. However this is not my personal experience.
@@martinanelsonartandpsychol6478 Yes, sand is a great suggestion, thank you! I’ve not had any trouble mixing two granulating paints before. But mixing a granulating and a non-granulating colour also produces interesting mixes. I don’t think there’s a right or wrong way of doing it, but not every mix can be a winner I suppose.

Those mixes are gorgeous. They remind me of their super-granulating paints. You just saved me a fortune. 😊 Subscribed. Real artists don't obey rules. Thank you for your rebellious discovery. Those mixes are stunning. I am going to use They on my raccoons portraits 🦝🖤🤍 They're not just B & W. They've got lots of shades of Browns, grays & oranges in their fur coats. Definitely a job for granulating mixes.

Hi Sonya, I’ve got the same Roman Szmal set and I agree with you. The ultramarine is not great, in fact it’s the only Roman Szmal paint that I’ve been disappointed in. Dee

Assume you are using w+n b35 #137 on this video. W+n also have a b35 (red shade) #140. Do you have that one too, as you say the rosa is the warmer of the the two ceruleans side by side here. Also good to clearly see more granulation in the w+n, so thanks for demonstrating that.
Yes, it's cerulean #137. I only have this one as it was part of a set, but I will probably buy it again when I run out. Might look into the red shade, too. Thanks!

@@doriswhyte1931 They are nice, but I’m not sure yet they’re nice enough to justify the huge amount of import duty I had to pay for them. With hindsight, I’d rather have spent the money on some more Roman Szmal, Michael Harding and Daniel Smith. Now that I have them, though, I’ll use them and see if they’re worth it. Thanks Dee!
I just use any PB29 I have handy. But I must say, I really love your mixes. I did not expect the hues to change so dramatically when diluted.

Hello Sonya, thanks for the for the informative video. When I use Qor the colors, they are so much brighter than what I saw on my screen in this video. Did you use natural/brownish paper maybe or is it my screen? Also the PG 50 is Cobalt Teal, I believe. The cobalt turquoise is darker and PB 36. 😊😊
Yes, the paper is a cream colour, so it takes away from the brightness a bit. I always mean to mention it but never do...Thanks for watching!
Hi Sonya, well I ended up getting a couple of tubes of Jackson’s watercolour but haven’t had time to try them yet. Then I got an email from Ken Bromley today showing the new Windsor and Newton revival colours. I’m sure those companies are trying to bankrupt me 😳
@@doriswhyte1931 You know what Dee, I think you’re right. They’re trying to bankrupt us all. I have not looked too closely yet at the W&N sets for that reason… Do let me know what you think of the Jackson’s paints when you’ve used them!

I have quite a few MaiMeri Blu tubes and probably only 2 tubes were heavy with binder when squeezed out initially, the rest were perfect. So basically just like any other high end brand 😄
