Plugin delay compensation issue in Bitwig
I am trying out Bitwig as an alternative to the Reason DAW.
In my studio, I have several drum machines and sequencers synced to the DAW through an audio to MIDI clock interface for minimum jitter.
Reason seems to handle this fine: for every mix channel, a custom delay can be entered to take into account specific delays caused by a specific drum machine. If an insert plugin is added, this is taken into account automatically.
In Bitwig, this seems to work for audio tracks as soon as I have recorded the audio, i.e., during playback. However, during recording there seems to be no plugin delay compensation.
Bitwig is completely new to me so I am pretty sure I have missed something. Any comments on...

I have tried Bitwig's PDC today and it's the best I have ever seen in any DAW with regards to mixing and automating with latent plugins. I tested with fab filter linear EQ and other effects with long latency - in maximum latency mode, with the FF EQ for example, the latency of that thing is huge. It is so big, thar Ableton play head is so out of time with audio clips that it will play a couple seconds into the clip with no sound and then the sound suddenly comes LOL. Live is a NIGHTMARE with delay compensation. Bitwig was able to automate latent effects in time, was able to keep even massive effects latency throughout the project in time with all tracks, both audibly AND visually, and was able to automate effects placed before OR after the latent effects and have the best timing for this of any DAW I have ever used. In a nutshell, they have NAILED PDC, and as a heavy UAD user, this is going to be huge for me. Now of course, I am talking about mixing only with this and have not tested external sources, and personally wouldn't need it since I monitor all external sources through multiple Apollo interfaces and use the Apollo DSP mixer until I am ready to print to audio. However, it may be possible that Bitwig is not having delay compensation JUST on external inputs, which is a shame if so. I have no idea but will check into it within a few days and see what I find, if you still have the issue. Also, don't be too surprised to learn that Reason has PDC issues of its own. Last time I used it, it could NOT compensate automation *at all* and, like Ableton, gets noticeably visually more and more out of time with the project as more latent effects are added.

The HW out devices have a compensation delay that should be able to autodetect when you click it, check the bottom left of the device you used

The compensation delay works fine. However, it probably compensates for the delay by playing the clock out earlier than the other signals (like a musician playing live would do). Therefore, if I use more than one external instrument (in the example: one RD-8 and one RD-9), I would need one audio clock out per external instrument. In Reason, this seems to work differently: instead of shifting the clock out, Reason seems to shift the audio in the mixing stage. This is all only really relevant for live recording of several synths, but I really got used to this

@@johansunnegardh2691 you can offset the global clock outputs in settings, I don't know if that perhaps helps?

What you have set in Settings / Synchronisation? Perhaps this is the problem? Bitwig is generally very well known for its tight sync with external stuff and for PDC in general.

Thanks! I'll try with the Bitwig MIDI clock out. With other DAWs, the DAW MIDI clock had too much jitter for drums, that is why I resorted to Audio to MIDI clock devices for sync, which is practically jitter free

The Bitwig MIDI clock turned out to be surprisingly stable on my setup, much better than a couple of other well-known DAWs I tried out. It seems that the Audio to MIDI would not be necessary with Bitwig on my setup
