Ok good news. I already have a mental design of this airborne Wind Energy. I am in the Philippine. so the commercial system will come out of the Philippines first.

How big can they get? Is there the possibility of very large kites? Green energy is in a way perversely conservative so it will be hard for people to accept a new idea now that turbines and solar are the emperors new clothes.

One of advantages is that they better scale than traditional turbines. With traditional turbines you get high difference os speed between tip of the blade and the inner part.

I suggest that you attach the kite on a helium filled balloon to keep it horizontal position, so that wind or no wind it stays aloft.

Helium can leak through "airtight" containers and even metal. We have a shortage. Helium is kinda costly. Among other issues

My guess this will become affordable once the patents run out. So maybe in 20 years. We're lucky that we still have plenty of time to address climate change :D

Makani tried it and failed, not from an engineering prospective but an economical one.

Oh no, they will succeed, but… give credits to Wubbo Ockels for coming up with this good idea!

At best a wonderful opportunity for engineers to play with kites. Or is it just a money pit, maybe a scam even.

The static wind turbines are built robust and last for years with litle maintenance. A flying plane with small motor- generators and full of servos and control sistems flying at high speeds is just the contrary. This is another attempt to gather public and private investment money for the sake of a cleaner world.

I don't think they're trying to replace conventional turbines, but rather offer a tool with different uses or a better alternative in certain situations. Like the vast array of hammers. Each one having a use they're better suited for.

There are certainly things to work out, such as failure modes. Makani (think that's the name) failed to be reliable out at sea, lost their kite-plane. As long as things go as predicted, all is well: once randomness hits, all is Hell. There is still the issue of massive noise and wear. Nothing is without wear that we can make. What's the lifespan of these complex beasts (the ones with the power sent down the tether from turbines on the kite itself being more complex) with all these moving, wearing parts? At least for tethered power generation, the maintenance/repairs can be done entirely on the ground without special equipment, true.

Maybe try a gyrocopter instead and have it rotate the angle of the blades to go up and down and stay in one direction and possibly more efficiently as well

I have read about this idea from the founding team. They were unsuccessful but opened up a new approach to how to get energy from wind. I also discovered a cheaper way to collect wind energy than VAWT and HAWT currently do. Can anyone show me how to raise capital and implement this idea?

You may be looking in the wrong place. Start a kickstarter or gofundme after building a scaled prototype. I'd be interested to see what this new idea is. gl

Patent the idea. Sell it to the highest bidder. Otherwise I'd start with looking up patents and seeing what is already covered and with how many companies you'd have to sign agreements and pay licensing costs too. After than you might have an idea of what kind of business case you'd have. But certainly just selling the patent will be most profitable.

It is dangerous for the air plain, helicopter ?not easy to see like wind turbine. WT stand stable at 1 position. This kite move around, not easy to see.

I think these devices will be treated as drones. If location is marked in airspace, shouldn't be a big deal.
