QCIB Nov 21 - How This City Got Flipped, Got Turned Upside Down
It's our post-election WTF? episode. New councillors. Gone councillors. Advance Regina did stuff. Mayor rhymes with hair. You just know we're going to be riding that gag for four years. Music by Guidewire (aka Ryan Hill). Originally broadcast on 91.3FM CJTR.

I watched the Access TV 2024 Mayoral Candidate Debate so you don't have to! I even live-tweeted as it happened. When the candidates were giving their closing remarks, I tried to distill the spirit of those debate closers into a single tweet for each. This clip is from the Oct 31 2024 Queen City Improvement Bureau in which I read those tweets. Listen to the entire Oct 31 QCIB here ruclips.net/vi...

NINE FREAKING YEARS of this nonsense! Can you believe it? The Queen City Improvement Bureau went out over CJTR's airwaves for the first time on Oct 31 2015 and here we are, several elections, multiple scandals, a pandemic, some lawsuits, floods, droughts, an asteroid impact, two robot revolutions, that incident with the time slip and a sorry episode with a hyperintelligent shark THAT WE HAD NOT...

This week on the Queen City Improvement Bureau, we talk with former mayoral candidate Brandon Abtosway about why he ran, why he dropped out and what he's learned about city politics. Brandon sheds some light on what he learned on the doorstep; specifically, that a lot of folks are not cool with the $245 million the city is spending on an Indoor Aquatic Facility and that is driving a lot of inte...

After years of consultation, procrastination and catalyzation, Regina city council finally passed a funding commitment for construction of a new Indoor Aquatic Facility (IAF) to be built adjacent to the current Lawson Aquatic Centre. Prior to this meeting and after months of hinting, outgoing councillor Lori Bresciani (Ward 4) had served notice that she would bring a motion to cancel the curren...

We kick off this week's Queen City Improvement Bureau with an update on the election (which includes us butchering Tracy Chapman's Fast Cars in an attempt to honour the first candidate to drop out of the mayoral race… marvel at our musical ineptitude!). We also talk about Megalopolis & what urban planning lessons it offers the Queen City (which are mainly: don't see Megalopolis). But the bulk o...

Russian assets are undermining our regina democratic process. LOL. Paid by Russia? lol. also why should we care what these anonymous 3rd party "targets" or "supports" isn't this just giving them legitimacy? I find groups like this offensive for many reasons.

did not expect THAT much passion. TBH it is all completely understandable and in many ways spot on. The NIMBY assertion is 100% on target. glad to see that council passed this matter and should proceed on it. how long it will take is another matter, but at least there is now something or some sort of plan to do the right thing.

I wouldn't be surprised if people who do actually take an unhoused person into their home at some point later become the loudest of the "not one red cent of my tax dollars" brigade. Personal experience affects us far more deeply than charts and reports and statistics, especially experiences that don't go like we hoped they would. It's probably a very rare person who became unhoused in a way that can be solved completely by a layperson giving them some indoor space to exist in for a while. I'm pretty sure most of the unhoused have some pretty complex issues that need more support than a room in a basement next to the laundry, and those issues are going to be anything from really grating to outright dangerous to the untrained civilian providing the room. Which is exactly why we need a facility like this, with competent staff who are paid well for the incredibly difficult work they are doing, taking on that emotional burden.

I have no idea why this city council meeting from a city on the literal opposite side of the world from me has shown up in my algorithmic recommendations. But wow this was frustrating to watch. Zero prizes for guessing what political ideology Cr Hawkins has. Dr Mathews did an impeccable job of dealing with the ignorance on display from him. I hope for the sake of the people of Regina that Cr Hawkins does not represent the majority view of the council.

@@PDCityHall haha as frustrating as it was, I did enjoy it. It's not too different from the same problems we get over here in Australia. Our conservatives are a little less "mask-off" in their approach, though when you pay attention it's pretty obvious that they _think_ the same way. Ours will say "oh we can't build better infrastructure for cyclists because there are space constraints" (while expanding and adding more lanes to the road for cars) or "we removed the pedestrian crossing because too often drivers were not complying with it". But they never _quite_ just come out and _say_ pedestrians are at fault for their own injuries.

@@JimCullen Australia had ScoMo, we have Scott Moe. Saskatchewan has an EV tax, Australian conservatives proposed an EV tax and it was made fun of in Juice Media. There are a lot of parallels.

@@johnklein338 oh for sure. It's just that this is a video about a City Council meeting in Saskatchewan, so I was comparing it to my own experiences watching City Council meetings in Brisbane and talking to Brisbane City Councillors. Federal and state politics is a whole different beast. (And to be honest, I was disappointed Juice Media didn't do a video about the recent BCC elections. BCC is actually larger in population than _double_ the state of Tasmania, and they did a video about their election the week after...)
