In the 60's as a kid in Detroit, I knew something was going on musically, everywhere my mother took me, musicians were everywhere. I stayed in the same neighborhood. I had no idea Detroit was the mecca.

I find it interesting the difference between coming from Philly into the Motown culture(Detroit) was an adjustment for him. Although other record companies followed Motown’s model none ever was able to recreate the “Family feeling m” that they had. I think one of the reasons Marvin & Norman Whitfield fit in so well they put down roots in Detroit immediately. Fascinating culture

I'm Puerto Rican and grew up in Boston loving these artists. They don't make music like this anymore Motown and Fania records. It's Thanksgiving evening, had dinner and hoping the Detroit Lions win the Super Bowl. I know it has nothing to do with music but I think it would be great for the people and city of Detroit. Love from Boston and Puerto Rico. 🇵🇷 🇺🇸

Eddie had a string of singles released after Jamie. The follow-up was If Cleopatra took a chance (was it the answer to Mary Wells’ I Don’t Want to Take a Chance?) was a recording that sounded in place with the Buena Vista Social Club - I’m not kidding! What a record! He cut Leaving Here in 1963, which was a live staple for the Who! He originally recorded Just Ain’t Enough Love, Brenda and If You Don’t Want My Love - all heart wrenching ballads. That man could bring tears to your eyes. Eddie also NAILED a demo recording of Kim Weston’s Take Me in Your Arms. It had so much spirit it shames The Doobie Brothers’ version! Eddie’s voice was one of the best I’ve heard in the course of my life time. But, Mickey’s right. Eddie was not a performer, so his singing career was over before it started. It didn’t stop him from recording demos for other artists though. Sometimes he and Brian would record on records by Martha & the Vandellas or the Supremes.

I recently had the pleasure of reading Mr. Stevenson's life story in his excellent book "The A & R Man". As a fellow native detroiter who grew up in the same neighborhood as Motown's famous "Hitsville" record studio back in the early 1960s, I can identify personally with the stories and experiences he shared in this very enlightening video. At one point in my life I either walked or drove by the studio everyday on my way to work; had the opportunity to meet several Motown artists along the way. Thank you for posting this.👍🏽

Funny cause all my life i thought the defining instruments in the Motown sound was that big drum beat at the beginning of almost every record. And the base guitar riffs. But after listening to this interview I realized it's the modest tamberine. It's literally part of every great Motown hit. As well as in a lot of stacks or any other soul label of that 60s era. So I think the Motown sound was really just the soul sound of the early to mid 60s. This was a awesome interview. Salute to mister Ashford. 🫡🫡

Credited with songwriting and production, I almost felt like I knew him. When I saw his name in the writers credit with Ivy Hunter, I knew I was going to hear a great song!
