It wasn’t really, Light lost for the same reason L did. L lost due to the logical thinking of Light and Chaotic impulse of Misa, this defeated L, but then Light lost to the Logical thinking of Near, and Chaotic impulse of Mello. Near was right, only the two together could surpass L

There were several moments in the show where light should have been caught but didn’t because of plot.

I might be wrong, but I think in this scene in the manga, Near said that they had made extra copies on hand, just to make sure that then replace the pages just right

To do that to a note book just to copy the names by hand, one would have to jot down a name every tenth of a second for 7 hours straight if they really got it done in one night. Then have enough time to replace the notebook and to get a good looking forgery going. I'm with bro here, it's not possible

@@e.n.d3238 no they didn't they were whittled down but they were still actively trying to catch kira and Giovanni is still an official government agent again if he has the badge for proof he can get access easily worst case scenario he'd have to make a call or two which wouldn't take long

Near's win wasn't about cheating; it was about outsmarting Light. Light's arrogance led him to make critical mistakes, like leaving clues with the ripped pages. Near used those to expose him. Giovanni's access to Mikami's deposit and the notebook swap makes sense in the context of the plan. It wasn't a flaw in the writing, just Light underestimating Near.

Near was also really stupid here, if mikami had kept a page to himself from the deathnote he couldve killed them all. Not to mention, it made no sense that mikami being the obsessive cultist that he is wouldnt verify the note was working beforehand. And it didnt make sense that they were able to copy the entire notebook in one nitht, mikami had been deleting people by the hundreds, he would have definitely noticed if the book was swapped since its all he does every day.

Near mentioned something about "being able to surpass their mentor together". Personally I think one day Near has the potential to surpass L, since he was only 18-19 dealing with an older Kira with much more experience whereas L was 24-25 dealing with an inexperienced Kira. In the manga, Near gave her reasons but due to the rush of the animators, it looks like Near just guessed everything which she didn't. Near was able to figure out Light was Kira like how L was. I am not saying Near is smarter than L or anything like that, I am only stating I believe he has the potential to surpass L one day or another. This also shows L giving a smart move, L knew he was risking his life and when he could hear the bells getting louder (which in Christianity I believe is a sign of death coming closer and how L paused before he could say "funeral" and chose not to say it). He yet did not pick between Near and Mello because even though Near was first, he knew that they both had to rely on each other to do it even if they're enemies. I believe L had hope that they both could surpass him if he ever died which is why he never chose despite knowing death coming nearer. And as Kira mentioned many times comparing Near to L and seeing him as a huge threat, Near takes after L proving to indeed be L's successor and even sharing similar personalities

Not only that, but in Light's eyes, he became a god as soon as he bested L. This led to him being sloppy and getting a disciple (Mikami) like how gods throughout history and mythology, which have had disciples from the prophets in the Bible to the priests of Aztec culture. If Light was an actual god, he may have succeeded, and getting a sloppy disciple wouldn't be an issue, but in the end, Like Near said, Light's "just some crazy cereal killer." In the end, his own god complex was why he lost.

Near could not beat Light on his own. Near and Mello together defeated Light. That was the point of part 2. Near and Mello were L's successors and while neither of them were smart as their mentor, they are superior in intelligence by working together

​@@jetguy128More to the point, they both represent the two sides of L. Near was the logical and calculating side while Mello was the bold wildcard . L as a single person was able to deduce very quickly that Light was Kira, but couldn't prove it. He would have done if he hadn't been killed before the rest was conducted. Near and Mello, acting as the two sides of L creates an interesting triangle. They're both hunting Kira, and Light wants to kill them, but they're both also sort of competing against each other. If they had worked together from the beginning, they'd probably have caught Light sooner, but Mellos sacrifice was important because that was his way of working with Near. I don't actually know if he had intended to die there or if he had a real plan, but either way it was his sacrifice that led to Near figuring it out. Consider that they both also have an advantage over L, who for the majority of his screen time, has no clue about the death note

After L's death light got sloppy. He really believed he became something of a god who no one could outsmart or match in terms of intelligence. Ultimately yes it did cost him his life.

Nah, you know what actually would've made Light the winner? Tear out a page or two of the notebook, give one to Mikami at the start and tell him "hey, when the time comes for everyone to meet, use this page." No hassle. Then even if Mikami screws up and slips, nothing changes because he's still gonna use the ripped page instead. Doesn't even over-complicate things.

She revealed that Mikami’s fastidious nature lead him to always fill out EXACTLY one page of the book per day, meaning that a single additional name would throw off his perfectly standardized format by appearing first at the top of the next page which would give them the evidence they needed that either this notebook is real or that a clipping was used to kill her, because either way, 1. She would be dead, and 2. Her name appearing after the broadcast time means that the actual killing occurred before then, and therefore light or a second party he had direct access to must have the real notebook or its pages, since he knew about it before the broadcast.
