A major storm threatens to ruin our Chateau DIY Christmas Ep 38
After a crazy week getting the new floors down, and hoping upon hope that they would dry in time ready to film the Chateau DIY Christmas special, we experience a major storm that threatens both the filming and much of the hard work we have put into the renovations to date. This episode charts the aftermath of the storm, as well as the arrival of our knight in shining armour, Curt.
The Chateau Adventures charts the adventures of Nick and Nicole (and their son Noah) as they take on a renovation of a lifetime to bring back to life an derelict 1,000 year old chateau nestled amongst the vines in the small village of St Julien D'Eymet in the Dordogne, so that they may create both a home and a bu...

    I take it skips are fierce expensive in La Belle France. A skip and a set of those tubes would save you a shed load of work moving those bags of rubble

    • @thechateauadventures
      @thechateauadventures День назад

      They aren’t too bad. Circa €250 of 8m3 for 8 days. The challenge we had is that we only had about 2m3 of stuff which didn’t seem worth it plus the rubble wasn’t in one place so not obvious to pick one single spot for the skip that would be readily accessible for all the rubble we needed to dispose of. That being said, there’s some future projects where having tubes and skip combination will work brilliantly and save a lot of time 🤞🏼🙏🏼

    slt, pas évident de se projeter avec un toit qui fuit, les tuiles semblent poreuses aussi, les épisodes météos en automne pluvieux sont fréquents dans votre région, donc priorité c'est le toit, le petit a les yeux de sa maman, bon courage

      Je pense que les tuiles sont ok, mais elles ne sont pas accrochées donc le vent peut les faire bouger 🫣 nous voulons tout à fait refaire le toit dès que possible, mais sans vendre notre appartement à Londres nous n’avons pas d’autre option pour l’instant pour financer tout ça 🙁 Oui! @@thechateauadventures tu devrais faire passer un spécialiste, la présence importante de lichen et le fait des taches non homogènes noires (pollution) font qu'elles ne sont plus hydrofuges, et font comme une éponge, il existe des traitements (saturant minéral) qui leurs redonnent leur étanchéité, si tu répares et laisse ton toit avec ce genre de problème, les liteaux et poutres etc.. vont garder l'humidité, et pourrir ! pas besoin de changer les tuiles ;) bonne chance

    Most of the comments thus far are fairly gloomy. Personally I would prefer to sound a more optimistic note. However, I'm at loss to do so. I went to visit some cousins today who had to give up their lovely home and move to a nursing home. It's odd really that so often these hard decisions are determined by one of smallest rooms in the house, the toilet. Walkers and wheel chairs are practically incompatible with toilets as one ages. In a similar way roofs have a sort of "out of sight, out of mind" existence until they fail to do their assigned task properly. Perhaps it is a blessing to know the extent of the problem and seek a remedy to the roof problem before proceeding further with work that could easily be damaged in another storm. I wish you well.

      True, and I agree with you in theory. However, this was an exceptional storm and we know plenty of roofs that were supposed to be ‘good’ that leaked in that storm. It was exceptional. We know we need to change our roof and we will once we have the funds to do so. In the interim we are fixing it as best we can. Typically it doesn’t leak 99% of the time… thankfully 🙏🏼 or every other episode would be about our roof leaking 😬

      Us neither given the choice. But we didn’t have too many options as our London flat sale hasn’t gone through and the bank which had given us a loan in principle closed its doors just as we were about to sign for the loan. As we don’t have a spare €250,000 lying around to redo the roof yet we are doing the best we can with the resources we have. The roof doesn’t actually leak in 99% of cases thanks to the work we have done to patch it up - only in extreme weather. But agree that the optimum would have been to do the roof first. C’est la vie 🤷🏽‍♂️

    To what degree are the locals aware of what you are doing at the chateau? Are the villagers interested or indifferent? Do they know you as the "chateau people"? Do you get, "Well, how is it going?" (in French, of course) when they see you at the market or the local bistro?

      Not so much, I don’t think. We know everyone in our little village. They’re all lovely and super supportive of the project, including our local mayor. Beyond our village we have bumped into a few people who seem to know what we are up to and have been curious about progress (including the owner of an afternoon tea shop in a nearby village), but it’s not that widely known as far as we can tell. We have had a couple of people randomly turn up who had travelled from afar to come and see the chateau, but that’s about it.

      Hej! 😃 it’s Nick, so that is pretty much the extent of my Swedish, unfortunately 🫣 re the insulating. We took the decision not to on the upper levels as the energy report we had commissioned said it wouldn’t make a huge difference as the walls are pretty insulating at just under a meter thickness. Plus it was thought there was not much point insulating part of a wall if the other part is then just the stone anyway. Once works are complete we should be at a B energy rating which we are happy with.
