Yeah I found the whole ship building sequence to be super slow as well. And while this wasn't the book's fault, Obi-Wan and Anakin's dynamic did feel kinda different from how everything else would depict it due to being written before AOTC. There was some cool stuff done with their dynamic but it did occasionally feel ... off. The idea of worldbuilding the Ferroan society on Zonama Sekot could've been interesting but the way it was executed was really dull, and Obi-Wan and Anakin really didn't react much to all the weirdness going on around them so it felt like a waste of the premise. I didn't really love the Tarkin stuff either. First off, having some moments of intelligence, Tarkin is described here to just be kind of a dumbass whose go-to tactical strategy is "bigger weapon = better", which seems odd for someone who's apparently so good at his job that Vader respects him to the extent that he does. Second, given how Vader and Tarkin's dynamic is in ANH, I kinda like how TCW depicted Anakin and Tarkin's dynamic than how it is in this book, where Tarkin attacks him as a kid and Anakin clearly thinks he's a dumbass and doesn't seem to regard him as anything of a skilled tactician. I get that the whole point of Vader is Anakin trying to ignore his past life as Anakin as much as possible, so it's not like any potential grudge Anakin might have at him for this would play much of a factor by the OT, but still, in ANH not only is Vader willing to take orders from him in public but he's totally OK with Tarkin knowing his identity as Anakin Skywalker. That mutual respect seems to go beyond "well, i guess i won't choke you" to me. I also find it hard to believe that Tarkin could get away with attacking and kidnapping a Jedi Padawan who saw his face and knows who he is, without being arrested. Like, you’d think Anakin would be pissed about this and would complain to the Chancellor. And even if he pulled some kind of “sorry, it’s politics, my hands are tied” kinda bullshit like with the Trade Federation, it still seems weird that at least the Jedi wouldn’t have more of a problem with him during the Clone War since they at least would know about all this. Also ... why the hell was Obi-Wan seemingly not at all concerned about the one dude eating seemingly living beings? That just seemed wildly jarring for something no one but Anakin took any sort of issue with.

Yeah this one was bad. Jaina's arc was super all over the place and rushed, despite the idea of a book about her coming to terms with Anakin's death and struggling with the darkside having potential. It also really screwed over Teneniel Djo and Isolder, which is a shame since for all Courtship's faults I liked where they ended up at the end of that book. But here Isolder is completely passive and Teneniel Djo gets killed very anticlimactically and no one really reacts, not even Tenel Ka and Isolder.

  • @critical_thinker0668

Overall this one was pretty good, though I kinda wish they'd kept up the bleak tone for a bit longer and had everyone be on the run with the Vong ruling the Galaxy at least for 1 more book before having the Republic start striking back. I'd assumed that after the fall of Coruscant the Vong ruling the Galaxy would just be the status quo for a while and the heroes would have to take more time to pick themselves back up from near-total annihilation. I agree that Jaina's arc was a lot better handled here than in Dark Journey, though I don't like her relationship with Jag Fel. It's not particularly interesting, and it's actively nonsensical since Jag Fel is an Imperial. Still, the battles were cool, Wedge being the Republic's tactical leader was fun, the orbital bombardment scene was cool (though I do agree it's weird that the Vong just don't know that's a thing), and overall this was a very solid book.

@@LegendsLiterature He's a member of the Empire of the Hand, which is seemingly a continuation of the Empire. It still seems to be authoritarian, as Thrawn thought the Empire was effective at keeping order and he's the one who founded the EOTH. The EOTH also was planning to hand their resources over to the Imperial Remnant during the Camaas crisis. Jag never seems to reject the Empire, or his upbringing, or authoritarianism in general. It just feels like it'd raise some issues for the daughter of someone who's planet was destroyed by that Empire.

Again this book underdelivered. How can someone bring up so much great ideas but cannot carry them out correctly. Almost every storyline is boring and does nothing for the SW world. Kyp does 2-3 bad things than he is turned to the light side, everything he did was weightless. Exar Kun dies in the first half, the Jedi stuff was fun, but ater like page 150 Exar Kun dies, and the last half of the book is about boredom. I was thinking what the heck can KJA write about when every storyline was almost completed... then he strung out the whole thing for 150 more pages. Omg. Sorry if this feels like a rant, but after Dark Apprentice my patience was every thin. Every character, every storyline, everything is so pointless and weightless. The whole thing felt like a children's book. Sun crusher, NEW Deathstar, Daala's continious failings, Lando's pointless love interest in Mara (so wierd after Luke and Mara in the Thrawn Trilogy...) or Exar Kun's pointless scheming, or Akbar's booooooring plotlines, or the kid stuff etc And i could go on and on. This was terrible. I'm not sure if I want to continue with Crystal Star (which almost everyone hates or loves) or just go back and read some easy, happy, go lucky stuff like the Han Solo Adventures 2-3 or the Lando books.

What were they thinking lieing to a man so dangerous... at least they should have "lied" about that his brother was alive.. LOL. KJA thinks the readers are stupid. Anyway I'm glad I'm done with this. This was one of the worst not only Star Wars stuff but books I have ever read.

  • @critical_thinker0668
    @critical_thinker0668 Месяц назад

Yeah this book didn't quite live up to my expectations. This admittedly was because my expectations were ridiculously high, the pacing is kinda inconsistent, and a lot of the descriptions are hard to follow (a problem Denning also had in Tatooine Ghost). The tension and dramatic moments all work mostly well but the descriptions sometimes undercut this by being confusing. That and the fact that the Jedi trying to grab a Yammosk takes up too much pages space for not enough payoff IMO. It could've been shortened and instead the page space should've been devoted to giving the strike team more time to breathe so we could really focus on the characters. While the strike team plot is great already some of the characters (Ganner, Tenel Ka, Zekk, Tahiri) didn't get a whole lot of focus when they really should've. The voxyn queen as the end goal also should’ve been explained more. Why were the Vong only able to make the one? How did the strike team know the Vong wouldn’t just grab the queen and move it somewhere else once the Vong knew they were on the worldship? Like sure, bait to catch the twins, but they don’t know how important that is until Vergere tells them at the end. Why not just use a fake voxyn queen as bait and move the real one somewhere else as soon as you know the Jedi are here? I still like this book a lot, and it's still probably my favorite of the series so far (though as a Stover fan I expect it'll be dethroned by Traitor once I get there), but not by as large of a margin as I expected.

I checked out after Star by Star, but finished NJO because I'm a completist. But Vergere is a villain. The crater is the biggest tip off that she's shady, because Nyax is the reason the dark side is so strong there. Nyax's darkness was strong enough to mess with Luke, and she tried to make Jacen think it was all coming from inside himself. While I think Vergere is definitely a villain, she's written with a complexity which is well done. She's not mwuhaha evil, but she's also pure poison for Jacen and the Jedi Order.

Really liked this one. I went back and read JJK to get all the references, and now I kinda wish Uldir got to interact with Anakin and Tahiri during these books. Anakin got some great development, Vua Rapuung's whole arc was great and the whole Vong storyline with the Shapers was super interesting. The story had a pretty tense atmosphere throughout with Anakin and a bunch of kids basically on their own trying to deal with the Vong and get off the planet which I really liked, and it was nice to see Shada and Qorl return. I agree with everything except the rating. The book is so mediocre and boring at most times that it's like 50/100 around that. It has constantly stupid characters doing stupid things. Like all those you mentioned, or why did Kyp shoot a rocket to the Stars and wait for the m to blow up Daala's fleet instead of just running through the ships which would have been done in a few minutes (like Han was showed to do in the first book). Or how did Kyp know Qwi Xux was on Ithor?????? The whole book takes places in a few weeks or 1-2 month time it feels like, but then Mara Jade is already trained with the force in a few days?? She needed a few days of training to controls the force while she did her training during Palpatine's reign. The Jedi Apprentice books were really fun and introduced a lot of great characters, including ones that sadly only got one or two appearances. Clat'Ha from the first two books and Elan Tallah from The Mark of the Crown are underrated waifu material in my opinion. It's a shame they never appeared in anything outside of the series, nor even got any official artwork. Other than them, I think my favorite books were the Offworld storyline (books 1-8) and the Special Editions. Reading the second Special Edition, The Followers, gave me that same potent sense of dread that I got from watching the Droids special The Great Heep or playing Knights of The Old Republic II. A sense of dread that lingers through the whole story and has you genuinely on the edge of your seat. And like KOTOR II, I think The Followers emphasizes just how terrifying the Sith and the Dark Side of the Force can be, even when no actual Sith are present.

I loved most of this book but most of the raid on the Voxyn base was really hard to follow.

I have read everything from the expanded universe. It's been a while. But i always found it funny. That its like a battle in a city and bam. The whole planet was defeated. How big are these planets. Anyway, i enjoy your videos cus i forgot a lot

@@mattpaul5441 yeah, the focus was far too limited. I think the sequence would be much more effective in a comic or film.

1.And Troy Dennings enters the picture tolerable right but going to make a lot of questionable decisions in the future can’t wait to see. 2.Anakins death I think a lot of people where disappointed probably because of all the build up he got in the prior novels and comics. 3.mission on the jungle planet so like apocalypse now. 4.sad to see no mention of the Yuuzhan Vong Hunter droids 5.Ah Tag and Bink the Rosencrantz and Guildenstern of Star Wars

@@joshuarichmond2688 yeah, I can certainly understand people’s issue with Anakin’s death and like I said, I can’t confidently say that it was a good decision. But it happened, and I’m perfectly content with it. As for the “Denningverse”, I’m interested to read those books for myself, I know they’re very divisive.

@@joshuarichmond2688 As for Myrkr, I just really love jungle/forest planets. Myrkr and Wayland in the Thrawn trilogy, Yavin 4, etc. Yeah, I completely forgot to mention the YVH droids. I think they’re cool. The idea of droids that yell insults at the Vong in Lando’s voice is hilarious, especially juxtaposed with their threatening appearance.

tbh i think this book is extremely overrated and yeah i agree it shouldve been a duology.

@@ibmm3358 yeah, it’s surprising to see how many people call this the best of the series, and even one of the best Star Wars books of all time. More power to them, but this was middle of the road for me. The issues I have are just too glaring to ignore.

It is too long for 1 book. And 20 books would be a much better number than 19.
