Watch some of the 87 bird species recorded in Pembrokeshire, including Choughs and Puffins.
In June 2024 we based ourselves near Haverfordwest in Wales to enjoy 5 days of bird watching. We saw 87 species whilst visiting a number of reserves:
RSPB Cwm Clydach
Castlemartin Peninsula, Broad Haven,Bosherston and St Goveran’s head
Minwear Wood, Rosebush and Teifi Marshes Nature Reserve
Skomer Island
Llanelli Wetland Centre.
Choughs were once widespread across the British Isles, but their numbers declined significantly due to habitat loss, changes in agricultural practices, and persecution. In Wales, the population faced a sharp decline in the early 20th century, primarily due to the reduction in traditional pastoral farming, which resulted in the loss of suitable foraging grounds.

Shore Larks at Holkham National Nature Reserv

The Shore Lark is found around the shoreline of the United Kingdom , where it feeds on the seeds of saltmarsh plants washed up along the tidelines. The Shore Lark is a scarce winter visitor to the UK, occurring mainly on the eastern coasts of England and Scotland. During cold, windswept days this habitat may not be so different from this species' high-Arctic breeding grounds. Shore Larks have d...

Hi. I'm pleased you liked the video. They are dark-bellied. You would be lucky to see the Pale-belied in Norfolk. According to the BTO "The two Light-bellied Brent Goose populations - from Canada and Svalbard - largely winter on Strangford Lough and Lindisfarne respectively, while the birds wintering elsewhere in Britain come from the Russian Dark-bellied population. @@rightclick.photography Sorry only saw this now. That makes so much sense to me. A dark-bellied Brent is a rarity in Dublin. Thousands of Pale-bellied here right now until around April I believe. A common sight here in our football pitches and parks. Thanks for the reply

Hello Terry, I'm pleased you enjoyed the video. I use an OM-1 with a 150-400mm lens. The lens has a *1.25 extender built in and I also add a *2 extender. The OM-1 is a micro 4:3 camera so the effective focal length of the lens is doubled. In full frame terms I have a range of 300-2000mm or if you prefer a magnification of up to 40 times. Sometimes I also crop the video in post production. The Merlin was very distant so I have cropped in to approximately 1/3 of the image. I hope that makes sense. Feel free to come back if you need more info.

@@rightclick.photography Hi again, thanks for getting back to me, I use the m4/3 system myself, Panasonic G9 = + Leica 100-400, plus Olympus EM1 MK2 with an Olympus 100-400 as you know giving me 200-800mm but I find them better pulled back to about 750mm. We have a wetlands near us ( my wife and I ) but we find that it isn't photography friendly, hides are too few and too far from the wildlife.( Newport Wetland's) was considering the 150-400 really tempted but cant justify it around here and of course the cost is prohibitive so I will probably concentrate on more video.based material. Look forward to more of your work, have a great new year. Subscribed Terry
