Ride along with me on flights around Texas and nearby states. I like to visit fun places that aren't as easily accessible to people who only fly commercially. I typically file and fly IFR for practice and safety.
Flying from Vegas to the start of the Grand Canyon
This flight we departed from Henderson Executive airport (KHND) near Las Vegas, Nevada, and landed at Page Municipal airport (KPGA) in Page, Arizona. It was a relatively short VFR flight, at 9,500 feet. We flew over the Colorado River, near the Hoover Dam, through the desert, past the Grand Canyon, and finally over Lake Powell before landing. It was a beautiful flight the whole way and got us excited for the next flight over the Grand Canyon.

Part two of a trip from Austin, Texas to Las Vegas, Nevada. This flight starts at Winslow-Lindberg Regional airport (KINW) in Winslow, Arizona, and ends at Henderson Executive airport (KHND) in Las Vegas, Nevada. The flight starts with going over the Meteor Crater Natural Landmark just west of Winslow, then past Humphreys Peak, a mountain next to Flagstaff, Arizona. After some more time in Ariz...

Part one of a trip from Austin, Texas to Las Vegas, Nevada. This flight starts at Austin Executive airport (KEDC) and ends at Winslow-Lindbergh Regional airport (KINW) in Winslow, Arizona. Other than a 25 knot headwind, the flight as smooth and uneventful. Mostly flew at an altitude of 12,500 feet MSL. Got to watch beautiful changes in terrain, from the Texas hillcountry, to oil country, to mou...
Introducing a friend to flying a small plane from Austin to Conroe, TX.

A friend of mine wanted to know what it's like to fly a small plane. We flew from Austin Executive airport (KEDC) to Conroe/North Houston Regional airport (KCXO) on a beautiful VFR day at 7,500 feet. We had a couple of diversions for a parachute jump area that was active, and to stay clear of other traffic, but otherwise a very easy flight. I did my best to talk through everything that was goin...
Talking GI 275s and Gulfstreams while flying to BBQ in Corsicana, Texas

A friend and I flew from Austin Executive airport (KEDC) to C. David Campbell Field/Corsicana Municipal airport (KCRS). There were just a few clouds in the sky, so we flew VFR there. On the way we chatted about the Piper Arrow my friend just purchased, some highlights of being a Gulfstream G600 pilot, and how great the Garmin GI 275 instrument is. Once in Corsicana, we borrowed the courtesy car...
Full Flight from Austin to Georgetown

Flew from Austin Executive airport (KEDC) to Georgetown Executive airport (KGTU) to visit Central Texas Avionics. It was a short flight, so this is a recording of the entire thing from takeoff to touchdown. Flight was made VFR at an altitude of 2,500 feet. Every flight requires a thorough preflight stage, but this one was a bit more intense because everything happened very quickly once in the air.
IFR Flight to get cupcakes from The Silos in Waco, TX

Flew from Austin Executive airport (KEDC) to Waco Regional airport (KACT) on an IFR flight plan. Never had any actual IMC time, but IFR was necessary to get out of KEDC as I would not have been able to maintain proper VFR cloud clearances without it. Landed at KACT via a Visual approach for runway 19. After landing, borrowed a courtesy car from the Texas Aero FBO and drove to downtown Waco to v...
Picking up IFR in the air en route to Austin, Texas

Flew from Crete Municipal airpot (KCEK) in Crete, Nebraska to Austin Executive airport (KEDC) in Austin, Texas. Departed from Crete under VFR because the weather appeared to be good all the way to Austin. Part way through, the forecast for Austin had low enough ceilings to make me switch over to an IFR flight plan. Had to pay special attention to the weather because Hurricane Francine had left ...
Flying to Llano, TX for Cooper's BBQ.

Flying a Mooney from Austin Executive airport (KEDC) to Llano Municipal (KAQO) in Texas. Flight is at a relatively low altitude to stay beneath the Austin-Bergstrom International airport traffic and because of a scattered layer of clouds at a higher altitude. Once is Llano, used the courtesy car provided by Cooper's BBQ to visit the restaurant. Enjoyed some brisket and a beef rib before departi...
Flying to Shreveport, LA to visit the Margaritaville resort.

Flying a Mooney from Austin Executive airport (KEDC) to the Shreveport Downtown airport (KDTN) in Louisiana. Had a relatively low layer of clouds on the departure, so had to file an IFR flight plan to get through to an appropriate altitude. Ended up flying the ILEXY FOUR departure procedure before being cleared direct to destination.
Flying to the Blue Bell Ice Cream Creamery in Brenham, Texas.

Took the Mooney from Austin Executive aiport (KEDC) to Brenham Municipal airport (11R). Used the courtesy car to visit the Blue Bell Ice Cream Creamery and get a flavor only available at the Creamery. It was a short VFR flight with some pretty clouds along the way.
Good looking Mooney, looking forward to more videos. If you are ever out in California, we can join up, lots of great airport restaurants.
I definitely need to get out and fly some of California!
Got those fancy swiss cheese speed brakes but we never saw them! Also had the perfect wing view cam for turns around a point on Horseshoe bend and didn't circle, come on man, missed opportunity. 11:37 yeah that's not really tight, and won't do much help in a crash, i know you got your pax seat slid all the way back for the staggered shoulder setup but make sure the seat locks into the rails that far back (mine has travel beyond the most aft seat pin hole)
It was definitely a missed opportunity, but it was all so I could fuel up and recharge the cameras. Next flight after this was flying of the Grand Canyon, so I was in a hurry to get that one started!
Nice video, I keep my F33 at HND and it can definitely be busy at times, nice job.
Thanks! That was definitely a more challenging approach than what I normally deal with.
Well, hello fellow CenTex pilot! 👋Love the video angles.
Thank you!
3:04 to think that of the size of the rock needed to make a dent big! And think of how lucky you have to be to have the meteor hit and miss the gift shop by just a few feet!
A wild coincidence indeed!
Mooney and XC flying, insta-sub.
Thanks!
Liked the video - would like to see more! You put a lot of time into editing - appreciated! Maybe put some time into cleaning the bugs off the windshield "glass"? :)
Thank you! I have a lot more videos coming out, so please subscribe and you’ll see some neat stuff. I added “clean windshield” to my checklist after this flight so the cameras would see better. 😄
@@thaterikperson Already watched a few - you're doing great!
YT recommended your video and I must confess that I recognized EDC before your caption said it. Shameful. LOL Glad you help us spread the joy of aviation. I hope to stop by EDC soon, maybe even this year. Keep the greasy side down.
Thank you for the kind words!
Lucky you found ramp space.
Would have flown my Gulfstream had I known there would be space.
Nice video. I don't think my bladder would handle a 5 hour leg. 2 questions - do you do your own video editing? and how did you mount your camera underneath the tail?
I do my own editing. Had to learn a new skill for it and find it a lot of fun. The camera under the plane is mounted via a clamp mount I found on Amazon. It’s been working great!
@ Last question, what editing software do you use?
I use Davinci Resolve. The free version is amazing. I tried Premiere Pro too, but like Resolve better.
Very cool. 😎
Thank you!
Great video. Love the Mooneys. I have a J based out of ODO.
Oh cool. I visited Midland a couple of years ago to check out a museum. Was before I was making videos so I need to go back.
Haha you said Knot-Head 4:36
very professional… nice work
Thank you very much!
how to contact you
Love Black Walnut!
Good vid. Who did your GI275s and are you happy with them? Did you consider either G5s or G3X curiously?
Not sure who installed them. They were in the plane when I bought it, so no consideration on the other options either. Very happy with them though and don’t feel a desire to upgrade.
Good Stuff
Very nice Flight. It looks like it was an absolute gorgeous day! Definitely fantastic flight conditions for her first flight. Fly well!
Thanks!
Well done. She enjoyed it!
Thanks!
@thaterikperson this is AWESOME! I thought we lost camera's mid-flight and so glad to see you got to capture that PERFECT landing. Thanks again for an unforgettable experience and being such a great teacher. I will cherish this video forever and so will Teal and Violet! I'm ready for my second flight lesson but my husband already told me he's going up with you next. ;)
So happy to do it!
Great video. Love how she listening and trying to learn
Thanks!
I like your panel, looks retro with modern round dials. What is the lowest rpm you can cruise with and do you follow Mike Busch's work?
26” MP at 2200 RPM is the lowest I use. That’s the “Econ Cruise” setting recommend by Rocket Engineering. Have seen some of Mike’s work, but don’t follow closely.
My home airport! Good looking plane!
Thanks!
do you fly into/out of HYI? I feel like i've seen this mooney there recently.
Haven’t been to HYI in quite a while. I do know of a couple Mooneys there that look similar.
Still waiting for the grass landing on 31/13 at KCEK!!
#ReleaseTheEpsteinClientList
Didn’t like the music for this one, but otherwise solid vid!
I will keep that in mind. Thank you for the feedback.
🎶 Wastin’ away again in Margaritaville… ha!
Had to watch this one again. So good!
Glad you liked it! I’ll have to do the flight again.
Nice job switching over to IFR!
Appreciate the kind the words.
Yummy!
You have to try them!
I am always so nervous you are going to forget to close the passenger door before take off! Otherwise, great video. Make a part 2 where you are eating the BBQ.
That’s why I have the checklist!
Great experience
Thank you!
Any Mooney > even a 200hp Arrow
Agreed. Will pass it on to my passenger!
I remember those days flying for breakfast, lunch and dinner. That was in the 90's. Had a heart attack in 2006 and also became a diabetic. If you like Texas BBQ, fly to North Texas Regional Airport, KGYI, PNX, and try Cackle and Oink's award winning BBQ in Sherman, Texas. Not affiliated with Cackle and Oink, just a consumer of their delicious product. B. Obama's Secret Service ate there while Obama was in Durant, Okla, meeting with Choctaw Nation people.
Thanks for the recommendation! Will definitely have to try it out.
Nice video, Erik. Thank you for putting out this content.
Thanks for the kind words!
I’m 99 percent sure the 275 supports a flight director if you have the right autopilot (GFC500).
I did look this up after the flight and you are correct!
@ perfect thanks!
I just found your channel and enjoy your vids. Just got my instrument in September and working on my commercial. Have my first planned single pilot IFR flight scheduled for this weekend, going from Denton to Oklahoma City. 🙏 it goes well!
Congrats on the instrument rating! That has made a world of difference for me to be able to do longer cross countries. Enjoy!
Yall are right in my backyard (kvct) lol
Hey guys, I was impressed by your video from the first seconds when you captured the hangar door was rising. Very nice looking. Second-nice scenario, great camera work and good ATC presentation. My support to your channel. Good luck w growing!!!
Thank you for the support and kind words!
@@thaterikperson Of course, keep going
Had to laugh. Flew up form Conroe a few years back in my 75 Arrow intent om visiting the "museum". FBO folks laughed at us. They did let us go into one of the run down hangars and check out several PT-19's, one was still flying the other was basically parts. Highly recommend ya'll visit Tyler. They do have a museum and static aircraft you can touch.
Good to know Tyler has one. I've been looking for a museum to visit that isn't too far away.
Nice Mooney! Enjoyed your vid. We installed two GI-275's into our Grumman Tiger (partnership) within the last year. Also kept most of the steam gauges as backups, although I wanted to pull them all! I was outvoted. I'm down in Houston and always looking for good places to eat.
We pulled the whole vacuum system to save wait, but I can understand wanting extra redundancy. K&K in Conroe was really get BBQ. Highly recommend and definitely get the beans.
Hmmm, did not get to see any barbeque?
The place at the end, K&K Bar-b-que! I did a bad job filming though as you noticed and didn’t capture the food. I won’t make that mistake again!
SO. MANY. HOUSES. I moved to the Austin area in January of 1992 to attend UT, it has changed so much since then. You would have flown over a whole lot of nothing back then. There was absolutely nothing between Old Settlers and 29 back in those days, until you were right in downtown Georgetown.
I was a little surprised too! It's so empty right near the Austin Executive airport, but there are lots of neighborhoods not too far away.
Thank you for this amazing video.
As a Baylor aviation student, it's so cool to see KACT on youtube and hear our callsigns on frequency!
Are you training in the Tecnams? Those are such cool planes. It's neat that ACT has so many!
Nice video Erik! That's a cool Mooney. I am working towards my CFI out of FTW. Hope to see ya around sometime
Thank you! I have a few spots in mind in the DFW area to visit so keep your eye out.
Hi Erik! In August, we met on a flight (LHR-AUS) and talked about GA. I did not know you had a channel. I just stumbled upon this video and wondered why you looked familiar! Then it hit me! Thank you for sharing this video. I love this kind of content.
I remember! My midwestern sensibilities told me not to push my channel at the time. Glad you liked it!
Cool video! Thanks for sharing!
Thanks! Be sure to keep a look out for future videos.
