Bondrewd is such a good character because he is NOT evil. He does not do the things he does because he likes to cause suffering or do despicable and depraved things, he does them in absolute pursuit of knowledge. He is so scary because he is quite literally the embodiment of progress itself, and all its beauties and horrors as well.
