The only version of recording I like is the recording used in the Episode of 'Jesse Stone' (Tom Selleck / Viola Davis).
Beautifully played.and one of my favourite pieces.of music.. Very restful...
Richter finds that nice bass line that everybody else seems to miss and phrases in a lovely long arch. Graceful and intelligent.
Cortot sounds like he has to get to the bathroom in a hurry; Fiorentino like he's playing for his piano teacher; Joyce like it's either play a piano or drive a semi; Kempff like he's afraid of the piece; Farnadi like the drugs should kick in any moment; Arrau like he's practising musical tiptoe; Kentner is somnambulistic; Ginzburg sounds like he and his toy piano just won a spot in the kiddie orchestra; Richter like if he doesn't nail it in two minutes, somebody is going to shoot his kid. And then there's Horowitz who brings near-perfection to this piece: just the right tempo, a sound like water, fabulous expression. He brings enormous character and emotion to the piece (as he does with so much of his work) and, frankly, makes it much more interesting to listen to than the others do.
I can’t stand this type of comparison.
They are all incredibly good. My favorite "conventional" interpretation is Malikova, the distinction between all the voices is clear, the melody is singing, the ending is very powerful yet perfectly controled, i absolutely love it. But i have to say, the very unconventionally slow tempo of Zilberstein takes the cake for me, she brings out the dreamy and sad atmosphere in a unique way and gives a very powerfully emotional rendition. Fabulous.
In one of his many informed & informative talks on JSB Glen Gould as an aside made a comment concerning the difference between the music of Bach & that of the classical composers that followed him , simply put Bachs music has a beauty that is content with the moment while that of the classical period is music that to a greater or lesser degree is always driven & goal orientated , self evident really but many pianists who attempt Bach are yet to understand this😊😊😊😊.
I liked Marianna Rashkovetsky a lot.
Hope this isn't a stupid question, but how do you know which pianist is playing
Great
Namen? Wer sucht, wird sie finden.
My favorite interpretation of this very special piece is Arthur Jussen. Treat yourself on YT.

What an awful mixed bag ...
Missing the finest as usual - Arcadi Volodos: ruclips.net/video/GGRlrkxJExQ/видео.html
I'm surprised that Solomon's 1930 recording isn't included here; he gives a perfect rendering of the piece which makes me wish he had recorded a lot more Liszt than just the handful of things he did.
Ads everywhere ..
The best is by Gould. But nice tries...😅
Alessio Bax e Vahan Mardirossian
I will always associate this artpiece with this fugue for the rest of my life
I pity Wilhelm Kempff’s wife: love-making would be over in a flash if his awful rendition of this beautiful and sensual piece is anything to go by. Also Eileen and the other Wilhelm….However it’s Seymour Berstein’s most loving rendition that beats them all. The playing of this piece requires a sense of endless time. Molte grazie per wuesto confronto. I miei preferiti? RICHTER E GAVRILOV ( suo alunno 😂). Perché ? In essi c'è semplicità , onestà e una splendida tensione ❤
in this piece, Horowitz is at his true peak. Forget the showmanship that makes a large part of his legacy, the real reason he remains one of if not the best pianist of the 20th century is shown in this piece. The harsh right hand sound at the beginning, the breathtaking dynamics, the echo sound. No one plays pieces like these like him.
(rachmaninoff js the only other who plays in the style to horowitz! And if horowitz is not the greatest of the 20th century, Rachmaninoff certainly is
I would like to add Brigitte Engerer's 1996 recording to the mix: ruclips.net/video/x7r8QaXOEz0/видео.html Thank you! 🙂
U FORGOT GOULD AND LARS VOGT !
Perahia Volodos
Horowitz every time. Everything else is soporific and cloyingly sentimental.
The sixth one is magical.❤
21:12??? II. Pastorale - Liszt Années de pèlerinage by Lazar Berman
We got a bonus I guess? Lol
Glenn Gould's was best. But, he's not listed here. :(
I like Gorge Bolet's poetic melody, real good touch and always gapped properly in between notes.
As usual you missed or ignored some of the finest readings: ruclips.net/video/wPtk09KQ35o/видео.html You seem to be obsessed with dead pianists
Richter!
Wosner and Knauer for me among this list. But Solokov and Schiff are incredible
Bit of a pointless exercise, since the modern piano has NOTHING to do with Rameau's music.
Pletnev's made me laugh out loud. What a genius.
