Here's a demo of the Shippey "Axe" Octave Mandolin. The music is part of "Clarsach" by John Renbourn, that I have adapted for Octave Mandolin. This instrument has a 580mm scale length and body width of 380mm. The Octave mandolin, or Octave mandola as it is sometimes known, is usually tuned G D A E, an octave below the standard (Neapolitan mandolin). However, for this piece of music I have tuned...

A short demo of my "Tone" Tenor Mandola. This instrument has a 415mm scale length and body width of 315mm. It is usually tuned C,G,D,A (low to high), but for this piece of music I have tuned the low C down to B, so that the I could play open ringing G chords. I recorded it on my Zoom H2n Handy Recorder with no EQ or other treatment and used a Dunlop “Ultex” .88 pick - the strings are D’Addario ...

❤
Yay👏👏👏
oo! handsome voice!! I've disovered your msuic for the first time tonight.. October 19th. Thank you for your music!
Hey brother, this is just so beautiful
Perfect
beautiful instrument and playing. What tuning is this in?
Thanks Chris. The tuning is G D Bb D (low to high)
The greek bouzouki one bass sring and one high string, on tbe lower stri gs tbat producex that special Greek bouzouki sounc, tbe Irish bouzouki just has 4 pairs of the same strings, so it has nothing to do with the body, the wood used or the shape.
Beautiful floating scales
Stunning quality and a beautiful voice, wonderfully played. Thank you.
@@davidmolloy126 thanks David :)
I bought my first bouzouki this year. I blame Jon Doran and this RUclips channel!

Wonderful
this is an absolute banger!
I've listened to this over and over, great sound and resonance coming out of that bouzouki! Jon Doran's performance here is also incredible.
Gorgeous instrument and musicianship. Powerful mustache. 10/10 video.
Thanks Jerrel :)
What a tune! One that surely deserves to live on in the 'tradition'.
very beautiful number, nice interpretation and rendition
Really cool. Having my OM made soon. Hoping a sycamore back will sound something like this.
Looks and sounds like an Irish bouzouki
I'm 70 years of age tears running down my face....ahh the power of music
Curious, the difference between octave mandolin and bouzouki?
They are sometimes used interchangeably. Irish bouzoukis are most often tuned GDAD, but can be tuned GDAE the same as an octave mandolin. They are usually a longer scale length than an octave mandolin. The 'correct' classification for bouzoukis / octave mandolins / citterns is an ongoing discussion!
@@aarondcruz2458 Thanks. I'm also curious, as a guitar player I'm keen to get into the dimension of octave m or bouzouki and poised to purchase the latter instrument. Is there much difference between the sound of these two instruments, do they both capo WELL for vocals, single notes etc? Flexibility of key change would be an essential consideration for me, over say a mandola/mandolin.
@@maxwellfan55 I'd say bouzouki is the norm for accompaniment, both instrumental tunes and songs, the higher tension and the tuning lends itself to that. They are regularly capoed wherever is conveninent due to the long scale length (see Daoiri Farrell and Jon's performance here for example), so key shouldn't be an issue. If you're intending to flatpick fiddle tunes etc in the original key like a tenor banjo the scale length is probably a bit too long to be comfortable. I'm also a guitar player, I have a tenor guitar (GDAE) to explore a bit of the bouzouki/OM repertoire but I'm intending to transition to bouzouki at some point...
@@aarondcruz2458 Thanks very much. I tried the bouzouki but found the long, unbalanced body shape less pleasing to play. Also, how the capo dulls the sound further up the frets. So, uncertain at present. I may settle for a smaller instrument rather than compromise. Actually I've recently been having a LOT of fun with mandolin and dulcimers, noting and J Mitchell style tunings. Cheers again for info.
So sweet! Curious, why the capo?
Amazing!
Beautiful
I grew up in the US, but my ancestors came from the lands of Scotland, Wales and Ireland in the 1700 and 1800 hundreds. There's something about the wonderful music from these lands that grabs my spirit.. maybe it's in the DNA. Thank you so much for sharing this!!
I have theory that the tone, timing and cadence are what we find familiar, particularly a drone. Listen to Nepali folk musicians who play the sarangi. It’s not a great leap to compare the sound to West African banjos, lilting Irish fiddles, Scottish or even Arabic bagpipes or the Appalachian dulcimer. It’s literally music to our developed ears over the millennia.
I'm Hispanic and love older , Irish, Scottish music😮 go figure .... this is lovely 😍
Cuál es el nombre de ese instrumento
