depressing. all those critics and artists spewing tons of stereotypical phrases to ''justify'' why this or that piece is art, frkn soulless clerks and advocates of the only live thing left in this world, daring to stick their dirty hands and tongues in it, in order to please their ego and fill stomach.
It is a sad and all to familiar sight to see the painting studios empty - as if painting is a relatively trivial practice and painting students face no substantial challenge in the studio. Despite his pompous manner I am even coming to appreciate Brian Sewell’s insistence on certain standards for painting - the credibility for the practice of painting has virtually collapsed in the post- modern discourse of ‘Anything Goes’ - this is where I agree with Frayling that the painting school needs to retrieve its discipline and more than any previous historical period - painters need to deliver something of substance.
I liked Graham Crowley’s question to Jasper Joffee - what constitutes the better aspects of his painting - and where is his challenge - as if painting is more than a self confident act of hubris and branding.
I liked Christopher Fraylings comment that painting (like drawing) is a thing that can be taught - what the art student does with that facility is up to them - hopefully something substantial.
7:46 Having not a penny and just the shirt on my back, couldn't stop Me painting. . . So glad I didn't listen to everyone telling Me I needed to go to art college, if Joffe's programming is anything to go by.
Emotional realism - and the idea of what catches the eye - and the idea of enhancing innnovation and to really reflect on what you do and the good question to a student was: what kind of criterea are you using to decide what is good or bad - and I wonder if it is true that there is a fear of statement ? And is it true that a painter can paint anything ? Yes I think so .... but how and Why may be interesting reflections on the experience of a painting. I do think that painting is a dynamic thinking -feeling -imagining-doing
The answer is simple: There is little or no emphasis on traditional, more academic methods of learning to paint - hard work, lots of practice and repetition. Learning to paint from real life. Far too many Art Students really have now idea how to actually paint what they see. "I'm an abstract Artist" or worse , " I'm a conceptual artist" , which really means " I never took the time and effort to learn how to draw properly because it was too much work". Once you have learned and practiced how to do it properly, then take that knowledge and stretch into what ever style you feel best suits what you are trying to say. There really is a lot of crappy, over-rated stuff out there. We need more quality.
Interesting documentary! That crit at 31.00 phew! I liked Jasper Joffe in this, he seems to care and think deeply about the what he's painting and the philosophy behind it.
im applying for this course, my tutor chris cook went there and is recommending it for me, this is very interesting but i wonder how much has changed since 1999
Oh my god, did we really speak like that 20 years ago? Why does that Brian Sewell guy speak like the Queen while she doesn't even speak like that anymore?
something about the british culture- the attempt of a sophisticated insult- its certainly an art form- but most are not good artists- they just come across as an ass.
Those people are fucking insufferable
They are all so POSH!

OK , I enjoyed seeing this especially towards the end.
Professor Harry Thubron of Goldsmiths' College/ University and Jamaica School of Art, would say, " You can't teach Art, Art is doing it."
Jasper the sell out..don't trust him...he will be the successful art dealer eventually
hmmmm.....you get an award of 500 quid. .....and make some nice art in the colour I want....wtf!

I like Graham Crowley’s painting Circa 1988 - which intrigued me - more than his recent almost formalist preoccupations with mark and surface.

I liked Christopher Fraylings comment that a school of painting should be focused on what happens between the paint and the student

you'll never be able to take a photograph of what's in your ed
I wonder if the art critic's subjective nonsense of Huxley's art will eventually develop into something useful.
you can take a photograph of what's in your head

Interesting in many ways but it seems to be a man’s World. Where are the woman?

Everything is art. If you can't conceptualize that then you're not a real artist yet
Weird documentary with just man.

like jazz...
buying art is a means of suppressing feelings of creative inferiority and the only way for some to be a part of the art establishment.
More shit on the walls than Jimmy Boyle's prison cell.

Painting needs paint. Excellent, so far. And........
im applying for this course, my tutor chris cook went there and is recommending it for me, this is very interesting but i wonder how much has changed since 1999

I've still got this doc' on DVD. Watched it loads of times. Absolutely loved the series. Congrats on winning the weakest link, btw : )
is the series still available to buy? Thanks
I don't think it ever was. I recorded it when it was first aired in 1999. Other episodes might be elsewhere on YT.
no, i have looked, any chance we could talk- i have been looking for the episode on printmaking for a few years.
I would also be really interested in seeing the rest if you are able to share them?
Oh my god, did we really speak like that 20 years ago? Why does that Brian Sewell guy speak like the Queen while she doesn't even speak like that anymore?
how long until the art market bubble bursts?
which bubble?
it won't........I believe
the guy who does the ugly, hollow paintings has a lot of unwarranted arrogance
Dogshit.

jealousy can be a very serious disorder.
This is utterly useless.
