Cowchella Set 4/7/24
This might be the most fun I've had on stage. I knew from the start that it might be the coolest gig I'd ever play. Taking place at a friend's old farmhouse in Indiana, which is lovingly named Cowchella, smack dab in the middle of the path of totality for the solar eclipse of the sun. The entire weekend was abundantly fun but this little slice of time with me on stage, playing with friends with more friends singing and dancing and vibing with me in the crowd, well it's exactly why I love performing. Thank you to Rick Marquardt (on bass) and Chris DeGirolamo (percussion) for making me look and sound even cooler than I am. And huge thanks to my friends in the crowd who let me melt their fac...

None of My Business -Original song on ukulele by Jodi Damon live at Oddfellows Songwriters Round
Просмотров 2228 месяцев назад
I played this song at Oddfellows during their Songwriter's Round on July 15 2023. My generous friends at Cincy Local Music recorded all three of my sets that night and here's the second song I'm releasing from that night. This one is called None of My Business. I wrote it to remind myself that what other people think of my is none of my business. It's a common theme in my music and one I need t...

Here's another video from the summer. I really enjoy collaborating with percussionists. I think Donny Hall's bongos are a wonderful compliment to the uke. What do you think? Another big thanks to my friends at Cincy Local Music for the video. Much love Mike and Joellen! I wrote this song many, many years ago. Birth of a Song - original song

It's been a while since I've posted. The second half of the year is proving to be a challenging one. But I have quite a few videos that my friends at Cincy Local Music were kind enough to produce for me when I participated in a Songwriter's Round last July. Let's kick it off with an oldie but a goodie. I wrote this song during a self-inflicted song writing challenge. It is an example of a song ...

Sorry for the poor video on this one. I didn’t bring a tripod and only decided to record it moments before performing. But I love the way my new song, Standing on a Planet, is evolving and I just love the way it sounds with two percussionists (shout out to Donnie Hall and Jordan Alan Jackson). So I decided to share. I just bought one of these and contemplating converting it to Lefty. Before I do, have you been able to lower the action enough to be acceptable for you? The wound strings are very high, even after a truss rod adjustment to create some back bow. It sounds interesting enough to keep, but not sure how playable it is. There’s not much saddle to remove and so my options are limited. What are your thoughts or recommendations? Thanks! ❤😊

Really like this video, reminds me of snowstorms & thunderstorms, they always calm me. I have a question, and since you teach, I think you'll have an answer. From the 1st 2 meditations, it seems you could play all the notes using thumb only. I imagine that the later ones would be awkward to do with thumb. What do you think about it, perhaps even the 1st 2 wouldn't be adequate with just thumb. I'm new to this.

My two tenor 17" guitaleles (Cordoba & Yamaha) sound better than my Cordoba Mini M! I think it's due to the depth of the body, which is thinner on the M... The 46 mm Cordoba neck is perfect. However, the nut with 38mm between the 2 "E" strings is a bit tight. I replaced it with a 40mm one, which is much better. We've still got 3mm on each side, and that's enough not to get out of the neck. Since the frets are closer together, the neck shouldn't be too wide either...

I just came across some of your videos. I am digging them. Why? Because unlike some video comparisons where they are using very high end ukuleles and the sound would never be anything like I would ever be able to replicate, you are using mainstream ukuleles that majority of folks can buy and use. So, you are very relatable and I really appreciate that. Loving your content!

I'm listening on a mid-range phone and they sound quite different. Finger-picked, the Nylgut sounds sweeter and the Titanium more "focussed" so preference seems subjective. Strummed, there's a loud, percussive sound at the point of contact, which I don't like. I've noticed it on other videos and thought people had their mic too close. Perhaps it would sound better if you were further away than with the Aquilas. I think the claims made for the New Nylgut are relative to their previous formulation, rather than to competitors, so not a contradiction. I just bought a low-G string for an Enya Nova-U Mini on Alex's recommendation. The plastic frets can't take wound strings so I bought a Freemont Blackline. Delivery in the UK was as fast as our Post Office ever achieves.

For the folks in Europe (EU), the RightOn straps are made in Spain so they may be readily available and at a good price. The strap can be worn over the opposite shoulder, especially helpful if you hold the ukulele at a higher angle. Due to a sensitive neck (herniated discs, etc.), I preferred the double hook with strap across the back because the single hook straps focus the weight on the back of the neck.

To me the mahogony sounds the most mellow. And koa sounds brighter than mahogony. The spruce sounds very responsive and punchy with more sustain. I like the mahohony the best. A lot of great ukuleles are made of solid mahogony and I think with good reason. It seems to suit the instrument very well.

So much difference between the two! The Outdoor sounded more like a traditional uke, with its bright, somewhat twangy sound. The Waterman was really quite mellow, maybe too much so. But what bothered me was the intonation issue as you worked your way up the fretboard on the Waterman. That would make me crazy. Speaking of frets, I'm actually eyeing the Enya Nova U Mini (sort of a soprano), because it actually has 17 frets, which I would find very useful for a few songs. I prefer the traditional appearance of these, honestly. But I don't know, I can't see laying out more money for a knockaround uke than I paid for both of my "real" ukes. I got good deals on them, but still.

Visually, from the start, I took the one on the left to be the expensive one, as did others. But we're not looking at it up close or holding it so we don't know what's wood and what's plastic, for example. So kudos to Kmise for making a ukulele that at least looks nice! And more than that, one that is playable. Just an aside: there are not many instruments - except maybe a recorder, or a harmonica, both of which are far more limited in the range of musical expression than a ukulele - where you can get something that is a genuine musical instrument, that you can play, and make real music with, for fifty bucks. When you think about what goes into making a musical instrument, which requires some degree of precision and art and craft, and takes a certain amount of time, and it has to be packaged and delivered, it is utterly mind-boggling that this can be done for $50. End of spiel. Back to the main story. Ok, look. The expensive one sounds better. It is more "precise." Has more depth of flavor, to borrow a culinary term. It gives each string the agency to act on its own, rather than becoming sort of a mishmash of sounds. It's like the difference between a mattress with individual pocket springs, like the ones they advertise with a glass of wine not being spilled when someone lays down on the other side of the mattress, and an old-school mattress, where the springs are clustered under the whole surface, so that when one person moves, the other person feels it. The expensive ukulele is the pocket-coil mattress. Is it worth it? Yes, to someone who can afford it. But it depends on what you're after. I currently have two ukuleles, a concert size that is rather mellow and calming, and a soprano, that's much more perky and lively. I love them both. And I'm shopping for the next three, of course. I paid about $100 for each of the two I have currently, and both were bought second hand. I'd prefer to stick to pre-owned instruments. It's nice to have one with some music already preloaded. :) I'm a life-long musician, but only about an 8 month ukulele player. I say: get the best instrument you can afford, and go for it. Watch a ton of videos before you buy one, so at least you'll learn what they are saying about each one. Patterns will emerge. Then go to Amazon, go to eBay, go to Reverb, check local listings (like craigslist). Try to play some in person at a store, if there is one nearby. There's nothing like getting your hands on a think to tell you whether you like it or not! But do it. Expect to be frustrated! Expect for your fingers to hurt a bit! Expect not to be as good at it as you thought you'd be. But practice, a little every day, and be patient. If you get 1% better at it every day you practice, and you practice every day, you'll be noticeably better after a month. You need to keep your eye on the horizon. Keep practicing. It is amazing to watch and hear what happens.
