5:06 - Why do you say the older 500 with posts is more rigid than the 500S?
The cross members in the old 500 were more rigid than those on the 500S. They did later improve the rigidity of the cross members of the 500S. They were just pretty, but not very rigid. Thanks for the comment and for watching!
@@ETXReelserviceandrepair I've read in multiple places that the 500S was a disaster for Penn, and that they were more prone to the side popping off or something than the 500. Do you think this would have been a consequence of the reduced rigidity of the cross members? Or some unforeseen consequence of moving the take-down screw to the opposite side plate? Or something else?
I personally own a Jig Master 500S and the cross members on were beefier and works well. I had planned to switch them out with the old style until I noticed this . I think those cross members were the only major issues with the 500S. The frame would twist . Keep in mind, I am talking about the U.S. made Jig Master 500S, not the one they produce today in China.
Where can I find handles for some reels I have
Try e-Bay, Amazon, and Mystic Parts.com. I am sure there are others if you can't find what you need. Those are just the three places we generally use.
Thank you
You're welcome and thanks for watching!
Happy new year Randy! Thanks for your kind words, that’s my reel I sent it. The shield being upside down would be my fault and probably explain why I couldn’t get the line leveler back on. I was really surprised when you opened up the drag and found the keyed washer out of place and that mystery washer. I am bewildered as to how that happened. That side I did not open up, my dad bought the reel new back in the 70s or 80s and didn’t like it so it sat so I’d doubt before now it was ever worked on. Would a factory assembly error be possible? Regardless thank you for your efforts, I look forward to using it again this upcoming summer. -Colin
Happy New Year to you as well. Sure a factory error is possible , but not in this case. The reel had HT 100 drag washers already installed. This didn't come with those! No matter, it will all be addressed and issues resolved. Again, I would like to encourage you not to give up, you can service and repair a fishing reel. Don't give up!
@@ETXReelserviceandrepair Good to know! Those washers a bit of an upgrade over the originals? But thank you again! I have a few other reels to tinker with, I’ll give it another shot with them.
happy new year from scotland
Happy New Year! Glad to see you are still here. Thanks for watching and being here!
Ty it help a lot
You're welcome! Glad it helped you and thank you for watching.
Randy, Wishing you a Happy and Safe New Year! Tad
Thank you and the same to you Sir!
I'm here for it. I always enjoy the reel work.
Thank you for watching!
You didn't take the spool bearings out, to see how they were running. But something else. Are you able to remove the black plastic spool casting release? I see it's not identified with a part number in the schematic which makes me wonder if Abu regards it as part of the reel frame?
I serviced those bearings off camera, because I ended the video before I was done. I apologize for that! The spool release can be removed, but I didn't see a need to do that as this was a new reel. Thanks for commenting and watching the video.
@ETXReelserviceandrepair curious about why Abu doesn't carry a part number for it then. Oh well, maybe I'll work it out some other time.
Not sure myself . Been a while since I saw the 6600 on the bench. I could be wrong , relying on memory, but I think it could be removed.
I got a toy train from 1998 that has a gear box that i would think needs grease. Its all plastic gears. Battery operated.
On mine , while the spiral bar is turning. I very litely touch the spiral bar and it stop turning . Is that normal ? The bar is suposed to stop or supposed to continue turning ?
There is a brief pause as the level line turns. This is normal. I think this is visible near the end of the video. Thanks for watching and the great question.
Where can I buy a replacement clicker?
Try Southwestern Parts.com or call 214-630-8161. They are located in Dallas, Texas. Thanks for watching! Have a Blessed Day.
Glad to hear your OK. Just waiting for more videos.
Hi Randy , could you tell me if the leveline on the 350 atually really work or is it a gimmick and don't work very well to spool your line ?
I have never used one. I just had the one in the shop for service. I'm honestly not sure how well that would work. Thank you for your comment and watching.
Thanks. I have one from my dad’s collection I might want to use. Trying to figure out the line capacity.
Hi!, thanks for the video, where can I buy a 109 at a good price?, Cheers!
Most of the time you can find one on eBay. I would recommend cleaning and servicing it before using. Also, if you need parts you can go to mystic parts.com. Thanks for watching!
got it...😂
nice job!
Nice video, I figured there was a way to disassemble, clean, lube and reassemble a fishing reel. I have watched a good number of firearm videos for that sort of thing and this feels a lot like that. Thx for your time on this, opened my eyes to what's going on inside a fishing reel.
Thank you for your comment and for watching!
Bad video terrible instructions you can’t fish for shit. You fish like old people fuck.
Sorry about that, IO did not see Bigboi's comment.
Randell, I was watching along with you with reel in hand. I too, was puzzled as to how to remove the Aluminum Spool/Pinion Bushing (?). I noticed a thread peeking out behind the Reel Frame. I tried rotating the Bushing and found that it is Left Hand Thread and comes off easily in a Clockwise direction. Surprised there weren't any wrench flats or anything similar. I tried my A/R Leer before adding the Spool and It worked, now it doesn't, will have to find out why. Enjoyed your videos. John
Do you have a schematic?I would check the two springs and the cam making they are connected and in the right position.
I'm working on a Eagle claw 4000 can't figure out how to get spool off....have you ever worked on one...
It will either be, unscrew the drag adjuster on top or push the button in on top of the spool and lift the spool at the same time.
@@ETXReelserviceandrepair when you take drag adjuster off there is four screws that appear to hold spool on took them out but what seems to be holding it is the line catch on side of spool..never seen anything like this before
I bought one of these for $15 on eBay, serviced it and took it Trout fishing in Maine. Very nicely made reel, operates very well, Amazing it only has one Ball-bearing. I also purchased a Cardinal 755 which I have not opened up yet.
sir Do you know how to remove the rotor off a daiwa goldcast 308RL. The rotor nut don't have any slots and it's round. Parts diagram shows the nut and rotor as 1 complete unit. Thanks
Since attempting to remove the nut didn't allow the rotor to be removed, try to twist off the rotorby hand.
Any idea where I can get a replacement handle for a 404? I tried Zebco and they said they don't have any.
Look on eBay for the handle. You should find one for your 404. Have a great day and thanks for commenting.
Thank you for the information!! nice reel 🤣🤣
Fron Spain, thanks very much and congratulations, great tutorial. I was able repair me long beach 68 with your instructions Best regars René Petit
Great news! I am glad that the video helped you to DIY. That is the point of my channel, It also causes my videos to run longer. Glad to be of help and thank you for watching and commenting. Have a blessed day!
Those old school thick asbestos washers don’t take grease! If you put grease on them they become very very jerky , learned from experience while fighting a big fish
You are correct, but the reel was upgraded to the ten drag system that used carbon fiber.
My line direction thing in my real doesn't move so the line only goes in one spot and I lost a screw where did you order parts . And what would cause it not to move
Possible causes would be damaged gear, damaged pawl or improper installation. Can order parts directly from Okuma. They have a website you can order parts from or can also call them.
@@ETXReelserviceandrepair thank you

1I'm doing a #9 now and can appreciate the struggles needed to complete the service. I put a lot of assemble/take apart time into learning. Your video shows those struggles. I thank you a lot for letting us see those struggles too. Gives me encouragement. Thanks again. Great video.
Thank you for the comment, very kind and I appreciate it. Sometimes things just do not go smoothly. One thing I have learned is patience, you must have patience. Thank you again for the great comment and for watching.
Chapters and an index would have been nice, since the video is, as you say, a bit long. As you pointed out, it is difficult to see the antireverse dog spring in your video or in fact in anybody else's video for this reel, and so the obvious thing, since you acknowledge that it is extremely difficult or impossible to see, would have been to shoot a close-up of the assembled dog and spring to MAKE it visible. The video will not help someone who does not already know how to reassemble it, and the person who already knows how to reassemble it doesn't need to see the video. Since I had recently had this problem with all of the other Penn Peerless no.9 videos, I fast forwarded to that place, since I didn't need to watch the entire 1:06:11 to verify that I did in fact get it right. So, when I got to it and didn't see anything helpful or hear anything except how it was probably not possible to see it, I was a little disappointed. Not a lot, but a little, yeah. But thanks for taking the time and trouble to make this video and post it.
I am sorry you could not see the dog spring install. That camera position was not the best, but this was early on, when I first started making videos. Now I have the camera overhead. If I am not mistaken, there is a second Penn 9 video on the channel and it was filmed overhead.
@@ETXReelserviceandrepair Nice. I'll look for it.
If I was wrong about another video on the Penn 9 check the video for a Penn 10 if your reel has a flat spring, if it has a small standard type spring, you can check out the Penn 209 installation. Different reels, but it is the same install procedure. Hope this helps you out . Thanks for watching and commenting.
Nice job!! Very good video!! I have a question what type of The Degreaser do you use??
I use the heavy duty degreaser from Sam's Club or Zep available at Tractor Supply. There are many to choose from. Thank you for watching and the comment.
Hello , great video . I have a 993 that doesn't free fall once you throw the lever.Does it need a good cleaning or oiling ?
It would be a good idea to clean and service the reel. Check the spool tensioner, I think it is to tight. That is most likely why it doesn't free fall when the lever is flipped.
Uh, Did u mean tool?? Instead of fool?
Yes he did mean tool.
Thank you so much for so expertly & so patiently doing such a superb job of carefully demonstrating how to COMPLETELY TAKE APART & THOROUGHLY CLEAN MY PENN JIGMASTER 5OO. THANK YOU KIND SIR! From Louie. Take good good Care ALWAYS!😊
Thank you for the kind words and you are very welcome. The videos sometimes run long, but that is so everyone can see and be able to service or repair their own reel. Thank you for watching and the great comment.
I have a 993 but it doesn't free spools. Is the part to fix that issue available?
No parts are available for the reel. You can use eBay to possibly find used parts or possibly acquire another to be a donor reel. Thank you for the comment and for watching the video.
Whats your opinion on these for catfish from the bank?
I think they are fine reels to use for catfishing from the bank. I owned one for a time and used it for that very thing. I had no issues with the reel.
May i ask what kind of a grease do you recommend for the plastic gear?
I personally use Penn's Precision Reel Grease. It is your choice which Grease you want to use, as long as it is designed for a fishing reel.
I have the same reel and I have been watching your videos. The part with the gear and spring, can be twisted out and everything stays together.
Great job 👍👍
In the first two minutes you are unscrewing the knob on the top of the reel and ultimately it pops off. I am doing the same and nothing is happening. What could I be missing?
OK, I got it! I just needed to be patient!
Got a question sir! When I cast my line out my reel clicks when line is reeling in the reel clicks as well. Any idea of what it could be?
The clicker is on. There is a switch on the right side to turn it off.
@@ETXReelserviceandrepair I’m embarrassed 😂 thanks brotha
I have one just like that one
Thank you for the video.
You're welcome! Thank you for watching and for the comment!
How much is it to service these reels? I have a couple that are just over a year old and could probably use a service. At $59 bucks a piece, they are just an ok reel as you point out in another video.
If you don't mind, please email me. So we can discuss pricing. etxreelserviceandrepair@gmail.com
This is Carl the gears is ok in mine it was working ok but i took it apart now it skips on the gears now i wanted to put new grease in it but clubby fingers and my old age didnt agree at all
If memory serves the main gear can be removed from the gear sleeve to replace the drag washer. Check and make sure the gear is seated on the shaft.
Great comprehensive video. Do you mind me asking what brand/type of oil and grease you recommend?
I use Penn Precision Reel Grease and Lucas Fishing Reel Oil. Thank you for watching the video and for the great comment. I hope the video was helpful and enabled you to service or repair your reel. Thanks again and have a great day!
Thank you for this video. My Dad had this same one, He had passed away and I wanted to clean it and use it to go fishing.
