Hi! Good luck with your portfolio review! As far as jobs go, it has been difficult for me personally but I have a set of circumstances that aren't helping either lol - the arts industry no matter what your focus is going to be highly competitive. It's expected but shouldn't be discouraging! You're correct though, it's not true for everyone - you really need to put your all in to your work and build good relationships with your professors. An individual's path to a career post graduation is going to be different compared to everyone else. Please keep that in mind. My focus was in sequential art (comics) :)

Thank you! As far as math goes, I'm not sure! I was a transfer student so I already had a full course of general education classes that got transferred in. You're better off checking the VCU admissions website for information like that, tbh! But so far I haven't had to take any math here because of my transfer credits but I think one or two classes are required as a student? Again, not entirely sure at all as it didn't apply to me lol!

Hi! Thank you for commenting! No - you don't have to be perfectly skilled in drawing! Having the knowledge absolutely helps and will give you the upper hand in your application as they'll be able to see you've done your work and are committed to learn something like that (so I do advise having some sort of figure drawing in your portfolio because they like that stuff) but it's not necessary. Also I do not recommend submitting anime-style drawings in your portfolio. They'd much rather see your observational drawing skills and personal work, but unfortunately anime-style stuff is one of those things that makes people in university cringe! Now, that's not to say NEVER draw it - but you'd have a much easier time keeping it to your private and personal work while applying to schools. Anime-styles tend to be "cookie cutter" in the way that can lack your personal flair and identity - they'd much rather see stylized illustration that comes straight from you than to see anime. Sad, but the truth. In summary: your portfolio should have your best work from observation and imagination - they want to see what YOU can do what and what YOU are made of! I hope that helps and I'm sorry if the anime thing was disappointing! It's just easier to understand that now and to accept it than to battle it until when it's appropriate. My son just got acceptance in Comm. Arts. Is it easy to do double major or major and minor in VCU?

I wish VCU had explained the difference to me, because I'm not doing great out of KI and I feel that Comm Arts might have been a better fit for my aspirations. Or at least would have been better supported than KI's middle child syndrome.

Congratulations! They're certainly not looking very intensely at whether or not you're already "good" - but rather whether or not you have a strong potential! Nevertheless, give yourself a massive pat on the back - it's a tough school to get into... and you got in! Any majors you're looking into? :)

Hi! I understand how you feel. In a way, it was a difficult choice for me too, yes. Partly because I loved the atmosphere of W&M, my professors, and my classmates and partly because transferring and moving to the "big city" was really scary for me! But, I am glad I applied and am grateful I got accepted. The arts program here is more accepting of the path I want to take with my work (W&M is not accepting of digital illustrations!) and I ultimately decided myself and my career would be better off here. This is what I told myself: "I would apply - if I got in, great! If I didn't, then the stuff I learned at W&M will still help me in my work on a technical point." You may find it useful to finish a year at W&M and then apply using the work created then in your portfolio. I will soon be making a video about my first semester here at VCU Arts so stick around for that if you're interested to know more. I hope this helped! All in all, both schools are good but it depends entirely on the direction you want to have with your work! Good luck!

Hi! Sorry for the late reply - for some reason I don't get comment notifications! I am local! Thank you for your nice words! Observational work is always more important. They want to see that you are knowledgeable and have a strong foundation in art. That being said, if you have a strong foundation your illustrative/personal work will be stronger too. They want to see a good balance - so while your portfolio should have "academic" stuff like figure drawings and other observational work, you should include a few personal works to show your creativity. However, I would not recommend putting fan art into a portfolio - they want to see what *you* can bring to the table. I hope that all makes sense! I toured the arts department over the summer at VCU and I must say I was extremely impressed! You are so lucky to go to such a beautiful school with so many amenities for its students. I can definitely see why they eagerly accepted you as their student based on your work! :)

Hii! So sorry for not replying soon - I haven't been getting RUclips notifications! 1. To be honest, I am not sure. I transferred in after having already done three years in college so a GPA from college is considered differently than a GPA from a high school. You are more competitive the higher your GPA but if they see potential in your portfolio, I don't have any reason to believe they won't take that into consideration. However, if your GPA is like, a 1.5, I doubt they will consider you. 3.5 and above I have been told is competitive, but around a 3 is decent enough as well. 2. I cannot really answer this for SAT scores, as I didn't get accepted based on SAT scores. Having been through college already, they considered my transcripts and didn't take my high school transcripts/SAT scores. I do believe though that a strong portfolio, strong entry essay, and strong teacher recommendations matter the most though. 3. My GPA was a 3.6 coming out from my previous school.
