    I think this is the most creative use of the internet I have EVER seen. I can't imagine what it took to produce this - but I am deeply impressed. I was so entertained especially by the fun-bits (Young Talbot comes to mind), that when it was over I reminded myself that this was Tragedy. You were all wonderful. Thank you.

    Since I read Shakespeare's first play, I think this genius gave us the best toy as a gift. The greatest toy on the planet for both sexes and all ages is to read one of the incredible, fantastic, extraordinary Shakespeare's plays together with friends. But you are the first people I see to fulfill my old dream. I tried several times to realize this beautiful fantasy come true but, but I was not successful. Congratulations you "have done the deed". This with one of my favorite plays. Very well. Congratulations. I happy for you.

    I can't get "the abuse of greatness is when it disjoins remorse from power" out of my head. This seems like the theme of many of old Will's works and a lesson we keep having to relearn. Well read once again.

    I agree that this is the best production of this silly play I have ever seen. It managed to bring out all the finest points and smooth out some of the kinks. And being a New Englander, I appreciated "Ganymede's" most excellent disguise (complete with accent). Also nice Cheetos placement.

    Another fun outing with some creative homebound stagecraft. Thanks! Why the title? According to Emma Smith's lecture on this play in the "Approaching Shakespeare" series, one explanation for the play being named just 'Cymbeline" is that it hints at the tragic strains of the story, echoing "Hamlet" and "Macbeth." Ironically, she also noted that the play feels like the author was trying to work out or lighten some of the heavier plays of the past (i.e. as one of the actors said, "Is this the 'funny' Lear?" and another said, "Maybe he was trying to make over Othello with a happy ending.")

  • @AuthorTess
    @AuthorTess 4 года назад

    As noted, this is a notorious "problem play," in part because the ending is so ambiguous (should we be happy? Is this the right result for Isabella? etc.). This performance steered the play in a more positive direction but that, to me, gets away from its spirit. My favorite character continues to be the bold and fearless Barnadine ("No, I'm not up for execution. Forget it"). The cast helped me see that Barnadine is not the only funny part of this somewhat dark comedy.

    It's very hard to find a production of this play. A few years ago when I was reading my way through them and then watching performances, I had to give up on this one. I know it's a notorious mess, but the company here makes sense of it in the commentary by noting that it can be read as a fairy tale. My first impression was that it would make a great "Dynamation" feature (if they still made these).
