1976 Cadillac Transmission Shaft Output Seal
We fix that pesky transmission fluid leak from the back of the transmission, and we give you a great tip on preventing it from happening to YOU! **Update** One of our friends told us that there is a second seal inside the transmission, but you have to drop the transmission and open it up in order to replace the inner seal. If the fluid seeps out over winter, we’ll know we have another seal to replace. Fingers crossed, but be aware.

    That spring looks dangerous. Is there a way to drill a hole and use a nut and bolt to hold it from moving? I don't trust the vice grips won't accidentally get released. Looking for additional safety options.

      Thanks for watching and reaching out. Those jack-screws come apart pretty easily. Clean the old grease out of them and use new grease to get them to operate. If for some reason, you have a stripped gear or missing bearings, you'll need to go to a junk yard and salvage some jacks from a donor car. I use a little thicker grease than lithium white grease, it's too thin and won't last. A little of the grease you use on the steering linkage (anything from a standard grease gun) will work just fine.

      I am just thinking that because the seats ride and fall on some type of cable driven screw jack mechanism, it might be a good idea to keep the screw jack mechanism lubricated with a shot of WD-40 or some such, because if the mechanism lacks lubrication, the resistance might cause that plastic drive train coupler to crack.

    Great video. And great tips. My 78 Coupe has a small trans leak at the speedometer cable. I have the kit to replace but was told by a shop (via phone call) that it may not be that, but the speedometer gear housing 🤷‍♂️ and that he was gonna call around and see if it's available and I'd be given a quote. Also, I got another photo amplifier (guidematic) and the headlight switch with the potentiometers for twilight sentinel and auto dimming off a low mileage 79. So hopefully 🙏 this works. This other one i have replaced (shared on my IG and you commented) I don't think it's working as it should. 😑

      Hi Edgar: Hopefully you will find that gear housing and stop the leak. I am remembering something about the photocell and amplifier needing to be replaced together as a matched set. Check the shop manual. It might just be for the twilight sentinel.

    • @Ihatemushrooms77
      @Ihatemushrooms77 Месяц назад

      @westofthelakecadillacclub Hi there, that only applies for the Twilight Sentinel. Although, that's not really true. Many years ago, with my 80 Cadillac Coupe, I replaced just the Twilight Sentinel box alone and it still worked with the photo cell. The Twilight Sentinel on my 78 Coupe, works as it should. And regarding the trans leak, it's a very minimal leak, but it'll be fixed soon. And my replacement photo amplifier and headlight switch comes in today rather than tomorrow. So we'll know later if it works correctly. 🤞

      Sounds like you either have a power seat transmission issue or the motor is only turning one way. I’d start with a test light and make sure the motor is getting power in both directions. If there is power in both directions but the motor only turns one way, the motor is bad. Only power to one direction and you’ve got a wiring issue, check the relay outputs. If the motor turns both ways but the seat doesn’t move, remove the transmission and clean and re-grease it. If I had to bet, I’d put my money on the relay wiring. Thanks for watching and reaching out.

      @westofthelakecadillacclub 4 месяца назад

      Hi, thanks for watching and reaching out. First thing to check is if the interior lights work with the doors closed. You do that by turning the headlight knob counterclockwise until it clicks. That activates the interior lights. If they work, your issue is with the light switch in the door frame. If they don’t work, you need to start checking at the fuse box and work your way out. Electrical issues are tricky, it can be anything from a blown fuse to a bad lamp. I’ve even seen all the lamps go out. A little patience and a 12 volt test light will help you solve the issue. Please let us know how it turns out!

    I have a 1976 Cadillac Seville with bucket seats where the passenger side power seat works but the driver's side six way power seat doesn't work. It clicks when I operate the switch, but the motor will not move. The courtesy lights at night dim when I attempt to operate the power seat switch. I tried spraying penetrating oil on all four bolts and nuts I could see under the seat. It started to work intermittently. But, after spraying the front bolts and nuts which were rusty, it stopped working. The ground wire with the round end that is supposed to bolt on to the floor I couldn't find. Does this sound like a motor problem or relay problem? Or just a ground problem? Sincerely Yours, Duane Wong Somerset, PA.

    • @westofthelakecadillacclub
      @westofthelakecadillacclub 4 месяца назад

      Hi Duane, thanks for watching and getting in touch. I’ve never worked on a Seville of any type, although I think they are all beautiful classics. The power seats are all relatively the same. Spraying the mounting bolts and seeing a change in operation is leading me to a possible grounding issue. It’s possible the ground wire was hanging by a thread and is now separated completely. Easiest test is using a jumper ground screwed to the nearest mounting bolt for the motor and securing the other end to a body ground. If the seat moves, it a ground issue. If not, check all the connectors on the motor, relay and transmission. If those are tight, you’ve got to start at square one and pull the seat out of the car to test all the components. Let us know how it goes.

    finally getting back to putting steering back on ,had to make a special tool to compress the spring,but it does'nt seem to compress the spring enough to get t C clip ---so back to watching the video cant do the part where you ,reverse the puller.when i screw that piece in to the upper shaft then try to put pressure on it ,it just pulls the upper shaft out ,when i put on pressure ,the metal plate plus the part with of the collar where the c clip goes behind it moves with plate-,so do i need to remove the plate then try and put pressure on ,you sent me some literature ,the c clip has to go between the plate an the shoulder --cant seem to sepperate the two, thanks good video going to watch again

      Yeah, the video could be a little clearer. Get a bolt that has the same thread as the locking ring that screws into the center of the hub (the big disc with the slots and the threaded bolt on the end). Tighten that so it acts like the telescoping lock is in place (but without the big disc getting in the way) and it will keep the column from pulling out. Good luck.

    Does anyone know of it’s possible to terminate the AC compressor and run a belt from the power steering pump straight to the crank?

    • @westofthelakecadillacclub
      @westofthelakecadillacclub 5 месяцев назад

      Yes, that can be done. You will need to measure the size of the belt that you will need because it will not be listed as a part number AC was standard on all of those cars.

    Why did GM design such junk (bumper fillers) for beautiful luxury cars? Manufacturers love affair with plastic body parts (and vinyl tops) is complete BS!!

    Thinking of your videos today, as I am going after teh filler panels soon. I bought the paint yesterday and soaked the rear bumper bolts, but that front eldorado bumper ? I bought the official manual today. Tomorrow is working on the horn pad....it's shorting out which explains why the horns were disconnected, lol.

      The horn trouble is likely a broken contact retainer. Check out my ignition cylinder replacement video, then search for a Corvette retainer for tilt wheel, it is the same as the Cadillac.
