As a certified fencing instructor, I heavily respect you, seriously. However, as someone who has been into Bolognese fencing for at least 7 years now, and a little into Polish saber, I must address your arguments regarding this supposed "overcomplication" in XVI century fencing. I hope you read this comment understanding this is, by no means, not an attack against you nor your knowledge. First of all, the weapons: you could never compare a spada da lato, cut-and-thrust sword, or sidesword, with a smallsword, not even with a 1600s striscia or rapier. Why? Because the smallsword is meant to thrust and only thrust. Sideswords are heavier, broader, and longer, and they are designed to balance the cutting and thrusting capabilities. More importantly, and many can argue against this, but smallswords are weapons of duels, in a controlled environment, where "gentlemen" faced each other in a set of rules. Sideswords were weapon of war, not just condottieri, but even pikemen had them as as sidearm, they were beefy, sturdy, battle-ready. Now, why am I starting my counter argument talking about the weapon? Because the fencing style is designed after the weapon. Over-complicated fencing: Over complicating a defense for me looks more like making a full body turn while jumping back, like they do in animated movies. In real life, nobody fights and survives doing overcomplicated things, especially in such a deadly thing like swordfighting. Now, this is too simple to say that's enough for my counter argument, so let me further develop: 1. Stepping to the side is done not just for defense, but also in offensive maneuvers. By stepping out of the line, you are already moving your body into a safe place, while your opponent is in reach. Think of this as an army placing artillery pieces into a safe position while still able to reach the intended target. It isn't overcomplication, it's strategy. 2. Failed maneuvers aren't difficult to fix: You've stepped, and your attack failed, it was parried, deflected, etc... You can still move, step further forward, or withdraw. Footwork is meant to keep you save, is not all about back and forth movement, and defending just with the weapon. Also, if things don't go to plan, and you end up "too close" from your adversary, you can still make use of your off hand, grapple, appressare (grap the opponent's hand), disarm, etc... Heck, you could even go jiujutsu mode if you know what you are doing. Now, I understand that for some people, disarming and grapple use is "not fencing", which in my opinion is a ridiculous argument, fencing is about fighting (fence, defence, defense...). Relying solely in your weapon means overspecialization, and the core of renaissance fencing relied on the swordsman, who was trained to fight not just with his sword, but also with his offhand, with his body. 3. Enveloping defenses: I've mentioned earlier that sideswords and rapiers were evidently much more beefy than smallswords. I guess that a simple flourish or cavaccione is enough to deal with an 800 gr blade that comes straight towards you. A sidesword tipically weights +1kg, this means you will need a well-structured defense to stop the mass of such a weapon. Remember also that sideswords are as good at cutting as they are at thrusting. A simple cavaccione won't do the trick. Further, stepping to the side adds inertia to your defensive maneuver, making your block even more effective at absorbing the energy of your opponent's attack. In my opinion, saying that enveloping defenses are "overcomplication" can be the same as if a jet fighter pilot says that helicopters shouldn't use blades because that's "not as efficient as turbines". When you say that smallswords "fixed the problem with renaissance fencing", I believe you might be underestimating that 18th century sword combat wouldn't be a thing if it wasn't for all the innovations rapier fencing brought a century earlier. I declare myself as a complete ignorant in regards of destreza and other schools of rapier, but what I can tell you is that rapier fencing wouldn't be a thing if it wasn't for '500 fencing. There is an uninterrupted line of knowledge of at least 300 years old. Attacks and defenses were made while stepping to the side, because of the strategic advantage, because of safety, because rapiers were +130 cm long, weighting more than 1 kilogram, and were meant to be used for even low rank officers when they lost their main weapon, not just for arranged duels. So, saying that XVI century fencing was too complicated, that used "complex solutions for simple problems", is a total disregard of context. Smallsword inherited the knowledge of many masters, a knowledge that saved countless lives, solved complex problems (deadly swordfight isn't simple problem), and even set the stage for later sportive fencing. And smallsword is that, no matter what people may argue: sport. When people tried to go to war with smallsword, they quickly tried to come up with something better, that's why spadroons came in the scene. And in the end, everyone shifted to sabers, beefier sturdier weapons, just like sideswords. With not much more to say, I end my essay of an answer with just a thought: I know you are a certified master, you yourself are an inheritor of the many master who have taught the art of fencing. But I think your main expertise lies in modern, 18th and 19th century fencing. The way people fought with swords in those centuries, and the way people fought in the '500 is not comparable. I think many people who are into Bolognese, Destreza, Fabrice, Silver, and others can agree with me on that.

La cosa che forse mi piace di più della scherma italiana del Cinquecento è la grande varietà delle armi offensive e difensive usate per la pratica illustrata dai trattatisti dell'epoca, che poi andranno drasticamente a calare già negli autori del primo Seicento, per tutta una serie di ragioni. E' una caratteristica che, venendo da un insegnamento di scherma nipponica con armi disparate e anche lunghe, mi ha fatto sentire per così dire a casa. Per contro è anche un considerevole fattore di difficoltà aggiuntiva: chi lo trova oggi il tempo e i compagni per praticare e tenersi allenati in tutta la panoplia di armi e loro combinazioni descritte nei testi dell'Anoimo Bolognese, del Manciolino o del Marozzo? Poi, sul fatto che la didattica della scherma dal Settecento in avanti sia stata parcellizzata, razionalizzata, strutturata e migliorata, nulla da ridire.

Se mi sgama il commento il mio maestro mi strozza però da persona che si sta approcciando a marozzo un po la sento sta cosa, in partcolare poi mi immagino la difficoltà di dover insegnare una scherma così sofisticata quindi chapeau agli istruttori che lo fanno.

Bene, ora però alla prima occasione lo dovresti rifare con maschera, guanti, giubba, iaito (va bene anche un bokken se non ne hai uno adatto o sacrificabile) e un tuo allievo che impugna uno dopo l'altro tutti quegli altri simulacri d'armi, così vediamo cosa ne viene effettivamente fuori. ;) Saluti da Milano (e magari l'anno prossimo contatta sensei e vieni a trovarci, che è dal 2008 che non ti vedo.
