    Love what you are doing however.... Clearcutting raw land especially in Puna can spread ROD which permeates for miles destroying native ohia. The proper way would be to learn from native hawaiians... there is a right and wrong way to do things specifically on the island. It is not "unique" to what your beliefs are. Good luck.

    Great stuff. That system of growing is so obvious but so hard for people to grasp. Through years of experimentation I stumbled on the same kind of thing. I knew something was not right about continually having to add stuff and manage and groom and fight with bugs and just every main stream solution and technique just never seemed to really create a living garden.

    I understand he's using what he has but animal waste isn't essential and there are better alternatives for regenerative mulch sources like pidgin pea which also fixes nitrogen. You can also plant deep rooted things to pull up nutrients like comfrey. I admire the confidence he has but it's healthy to stay on the humble path of being in a constant state of learning

    • @Offgrid_Neighbors808
      @Offgrid_Neighbors808 4 месяца назад

      Can you explain why animal waste is not essential? Do you farm pigeon peas in Hawai’i?

    • @Amok_Runner
      @Amok_Runner 4 месяца назад

      @@Offgrid_Neighbors808 it's not essential because there was a successful and advanced system of agriculture here for hundreds of years that didn't use it and there are successful commercial growers today that don't either. If you have the livestock, sure make use of the resource but If nitrogen is a concern I would plant legumes or clovers before paying to bring in a load of animal droppings to spread around. I wouldn't say that I "farm pidgin pea" but it's a valuable resource to be growing that I would highly recommend

  • @Amok_Runner
    @Amok_Runner 4 месяца назад

    I didn't see a single soil amendment go into those plantings. Sure the soil is fairly fertile but might as well give it the best chance possible going straight into the rocks

    • @Offgrid_Neighbors808
      @Offgrid_Neighbors808 4 месяца назад

      The idea is to establish the land with pioneering species that does well without much input. These plants will add fertility and will become future mulch crops for the future plants

    • @Amok_Runner
      @Amok_Runner 4 месяца назад

      @@Offgrid_Neighbors808 it would just be a shame not to get a harvest off those bananas. If you're gonna go through the effort of planting them with the intention of adding fertility you might as well toss in a handful of bokashi, worm castings or neem cake. If it's worth doing, it's worth doing well.

    Very informative. Have not tried perineal peanut yet. What relationship does it have with slugs? Will slugs eat it? Do slugs like to hide in it? Also about 25 years ago it was taught that some types of nitrogen fixing plants needed to be innoculated with the symbiotic bacteria at the time of planting. You would see it for sale in some garden catalogs. But now i never hear about that anymore. I always see the balls of bacteria colonies on sleepy grass when i pull it up. Too bad it is so thorny. A neighbor, when i lived in Hawaiian acres, told me to observe the colonies, if they have a slight tinge of pink, they are very healthy, and once they turn off white or grayish they are not healthy and probably on the dying phase.

    • @Offgrid_Neighbors808
      @Offgrid_Neighbors808 5 месяцев назад

      Interesting! So what I heard is nitrogen fixers only fixes nitrogen when they are chopped or atleast part of their above ground structure is compromised, because parts of the roots die off and become soil. I don’t think perennial peanuts prevents slugs
