Woodturning: Crackled paint effect on a platter
Просмотров 123День назад
First trial using Jo Sonja crackle effect medium. Worked well overall. Practice needed to get consistant crackle effect. Probably needed a bit more of the base layer - not sure. But for a first attempt it was great. #crackleeffect #josonja #woodturning
Woodturning: A simple two piece candlestick
Просмотров 210День назад
Easy and quick seasonal project to make out of small offcuts. There are no doubt several different ways of turning the shaft depending on the chucks you have available and how you fancy making the chucking tenon. This way just suited the chuck jaws I had to hand at the time. #spinfieldturners #candlestick #woodturning

Woodturning: Axminster Ultimate Edge Test
Просмотров 1203 месяца назад
I had the oppoortunity to test out the Axminster Ultimate Edge back in 2021 when it first came out in comparison to my trusty Sorby Pro Edge. Not being a Tormek user I found it to be very fiddly and not user friendly for me as a woodturner. Pro Edge very time I was recently asked for some help setting up the Ultimate Edge by a beginner. So I dug out my old unpublished video of the test. Here it...

But how do you do that on a curved vessel? Time to play! I used my #laserpecker2 #ryobipowerchisel and #woodartproducts 45000rpm micro drill www.woodart-products.co.uk/3_rotary handpiece.php

Woodturning by Spinfield Turners: Rob and Francesca turn a mushroom
Просмотров 1768 месяцев назад
A short first-time turning taster session for Rob and Francesca. We started with some practice with a spindle roughing gouge to get to grips with how bevels work on traditional tools. We then moved to using a carbide tool (with a negative rake cutter) to make the mushroom. Carbides are a great way to get an absolute beginner onto the lathe as they are quite safe and easy to master.
Woodturning:Upgrading Camvac twin motor vac with Nanomax filter

I got fed up with the quite rapid reduction in suck of my Camvac due to fines clogging the outer bag. My cyclone retained 98% or more but the very fine dust still gets through. Wow, you are a better wood lathe operator than me! Curious why you did not make an inverted template to hold up to the side, rather than cut a slot to hold the template?

    • @spinfieldturners
      @spinfieldturners Месяц назад

      That’s an option for sure. The insert does give you a strong visual guide though as it isn’t too easy to see what you are doing. I think doing both for a complicated shape would be good. You have to admire the Black Forest artisans who did or may still do this for a living!

    The biggest noise is the cutting process itself. The rotary carbide tools make a lot more noise than the motor. The motor noise itself seems similar to other cable drive ones i’d say. I do have a 50000 rpm direct drive micro motor rig which is almost silent (until you cut) and awesome to use for carving But more££! The 4volt handheld Ryobi ones are also quieter and good for small jobs

    This looks like the ideal setup for a small workshop. I would like the three motor version, but given the size of my workshop, the two motor unit would kill it. It's just me. The grass always looks greener in the best field. Those filters look the business.

    You’d be much better off with Darlow jigs and a Woodcut pivoting jig and a normal bench grinder. Plus you can hone the edges because they are hollow ground not flat ground. I honestly can’t believe how much stuffing around this system is. A honed edge stays sharp much longer than an edge straight off a grinder or sanding machine.

    • @spinfieldturners
      @spinfieldturners 3 месяца назад

      It’s all about personal preference. The Pro Edge is super quick, repeatable and easy to use. It has its limits but they are very easy to get round. I have used bench grinders with home made jigs, Sorby universal, wolverine and woodcut and also Tormek and Axi Ultimate edge. I stick with the Pro Edge. I particularly don’t like the jigs which can just rest in and can pull out of the socket easily. They all have elements of faff or inconvenience involved. Our club is split about 50/50 for usage. See if you can try different rigs through your own club before you make any changes!

    Nicely done. The finish is quite cool. I have made many of these that are similar. For the inside bottom I turned 3" circle to about 3/8 deep, paint it black then fill it with clear resin with a dragon pendant embedded. These were for my 3 grandsons.

    A glued on waste block could be used to overcome the screw hole issue & avoid losing bowl material.

    • @spinfieldturners
      @spinfieldturners 9 месяцев назад

      A glue block would indeed work well. 👍I tend to shy away from them personally as the work to plane the two pieces smooth before bonding usually puts me off. And in this case the need to overcome the screw holes provided a great opportunity for an unusual bottom detail. Which was a great talking point when displaying it at a subsequent Art Show. Many thanks for watching and taking the time to comment! So few people provide feedback or subscribe despite thousands of views each month.
