Tarot Card Pins: How To Make Wooden Pins with Vinyl and Resin!

This is actually an old project from last year that I (finally!) got around to finishing. Despite the bumps and “oops!” moments along the way, I really enjoyed working with the wood blanks and vinyl! Trial and error is all part of the fun. :) And using 2-part resin for this type of project is definitely the way to go since it’s more cost-efficient if you’re going to be making a bulk amount of p...

Nice video, cute keychains. What did you press them flat with? Thanks
I just use my phone charger 😅 but anything that's 100% smooth in texture will work nicely!
"digital looks more professional"? Awh man, the artist helping to push out the artists 🥲
Not at all! I'm sorry if I made you feel a certain way or if I implied traditional art wasn't professional. Of course professional artists can be traditional and/or digital in their mediums of choice, provided they're the ones creating the pieces and not ripping off someone else's hard work. The finished pieces I've personally made using this shrink plastic look far more professional (to me) when the work is drawn digitally than anything I've personally made by drawing directly on the paper with traditional supplies, which is why I mentioned it -- I probably should have specified that on the video or worded it differently than I did, so that's def. on me. I just feel this shrink paper yields better results when it's printed upon rather than drawn upon, and one could easily scan a finished painting/charcoal/etc. they've made and print it out on this paper instead of making a digital-only art or, heck, just draw on it anyway! It's their art, their vision, and their creation; there's no rules when it comes to shrink plastic art. I just made this video to show people how to make keychains using shrink plastic, I didn't intend to imply that 'digital is better' or 'more professional' in order to use it, by any means! 😟 But still, I'm sorry again if what I said caused you to feel a certain way about it, I am not in any way trying to push out or exclude artists! And I'll be sure to take care moving forward in how I word things for my videos. As a fellow creator, I hold nothing but love, respect, and support for all artists whether they work digital only, traditional only, or a mix of the two or any sort of craft in between. ❤
Hi, this is so cute! Can you tell me the size before baking please? I didnt understand very good. It was 4.5 inches?Thank you so much ☺️
Hi! This really depends on the shrink plastic paper you use, I don't remember off the top of my head what I enlarged the ice cream kitty graphics to. But each brand shrinks a little differently in size, so I would recommend making yourself a shrink guide to help with this, especially if you want to make small charms or keychains. On your shrink plastic paper (before you shrink it), use a ruler to mark a 4" by 4" or 5" by 5" square (I find either are a good size to use), then cut the square out and shrink it. Place your ruler on top of the guide you just shrank. The ruler will show you the size of your FINISHED charm/keychain and the guide will show you what size your graphic needs to be in order to shrink it down to that size. If you use my video as a reference, you'll notice that on the guide I made myself, if I wanted to create a 2" keychain (per my ruler's measurement), then I need to make sure that my graphic is at least 4.5" x 4.5" in size (per the guide I shrunk). I hope this helps explain it or makes sense! If not, I can create a more detailed How-To video on this topic to explain it better. 🙂
@@KatnipArt thank you so much!❤️
Your uv resin works with acrylic paint? What kind is it? Mine won't cure over acrylic paint without a sealant. Also you dont seal the shrink plastic? The ink works just fine with uv resin?
Yes! I use a brand called JDiction UV Resin, and it works just fine when applied directly onto shrink plastic (without sealing). 🙂
What type of ink do you use to print?
I use ink-jet! :)
Hi! Do you seal the sides too?
I usually don't, but you totally could if you wanted to! You'll need to rotate the piece around so that the resin can cure evenly, though. This can be accomplished using a UV "flashlight" or by holding the piece with a tool like tweezers and rotating it inside whatever you use to cure resin with.
thank you for making this!
Thank you for watching! 🥰
Best video ever
Best comment ever! <3
For sketching: BiC Round Stick (same refiil as BiC Classic) .... and Pentel P209 ... and for even more loss and fast sketching on the go: Pilot Croquis B and 6B ... so light weight. So good a line width for sketching on A5 and A4 sketchbooks.
Thanks so much for the suggestions! I'm always on the lookout for art supplies. I'll have to look into these. 👀
Wow so cute!! How durable is the keychain with UV resin? Will it last a long time?
It's very durable and lasts for quite a long time! It's my favorite type of sealant for shrink plastic☺
They are so cute 😍
Hi, the black colour you apply from back is acrylic pint ?
Yes :)
hey! what is this black colour? brand name? where i can buy it ?
It's the FolkArt black acrylic paint that you can get online or at craft stores. But I'm sure any black acrylic paint will do! :)
@@KatnipArt question about the acrylic paint on the edges, does it wear out from use? or are you supposed to seal it or resin it?
@@caillousdad5786 I personally haven't experienced any issues, but it's a possibility. You could seal the paint using a varnish or paint sealant (applying it with the same paintbrush size that you used to paint the sides). That would be the easiest solution,. Or you could resin the sides. Resining the sides might be more work, though, because you'll need to either work in sections (which might result in an uneven look) or constant rotating to make sure the sides cure fully in the UV lighting. A UV flashlight may work for this, though! :)
Do you have to use an acrylic sealer to make the resin adhere to the shrink plastic?
Nope! The resin adheres to the shrink plastic on its own. ☺
Omg, the grid organiser is a really helpful tip! I've never seen those before, thank you! How is the bag fairing a year on? Is the colour holding up or has it changed/faded at all? Thanks for the vid 😊
Those grid organizers are SO HANDY I cannot recommend them enough! The backpack has definitely faded somewhat from a year of use but it's not so faded that it looks bad or dirty. Honestly, I think it looks even better and since it's more worn now, the bag's not as stiff as it used to be so it makes it easier to unzip the pockets. ☺
Do you have tips for if you make a mess with the resin? My first project it ended up with some drops on the sides that dried.
That's happened to me a couple times, too. Depending on how bad the droplets are, I usually take a sharp X-Acto knife to carefully scrape/pop them off and then use sandpaper or a nail file to sand down any remaining pieces of it. It doesn't always work 100% perfectly, but it could help mask the mistake!
What printer do you use
Canon Pixma Pro 100.
Great video! Do you seal the sides with resin as well so the paint doesn’t chip? I’m not sure if I should. Thank you!😊
I don't seal the sides, as I haven't experienced any issues with chipped paint (yet), but you totally could use resin! One thing to keep in mind if you do that though is to make sure you have a way to evenly cure the resin around all sides. Since it won't be exposed to UV lighting in the same way as it would lying flat, you'll want to turn the piece as it cures to make sure it seals properly. You could try a UV flashlight or something to help with that. Or you could even coat the sides with a paint sealant instead, like ModPodge. :)
@@KatnipArt Thank you so much for your help! I really appreciate it!☺️
It’s great to see a Kanken used by an artist. So I’m guessing you carry your personal stuff like wallet and phone separate?
My phone case has a wallet built in, so I usually just stick that in my pocket (or in the bag itself if I'm wearing something without pockets.)
That was my question also….Thanks for the answer
Would love to have an in depth tutorial! Love how you donate to shelters! Thank you!
Animal shelters need all the support they can get, especially the smaller ones❤. And I'll be happy to make more in-depth tutorial on shrink plastic keychains! Thank you for taking the time to leave a comment. 😸
You didn’t show how you made them from the beginning
Thanks for taking the time to leave your feedback! All of my earrings are typically made in Photoshop and then printed on shrink plastic paper. (This video was more focused on the process afterwards since I wasn't sure if ppl would be interested in the earlier steps). But I do have another video, 'How To Make Cute Tiger Earrings', that shows how my earrings are made from the beginning! Same process, just different kitties. :)
what ink of printer did you use? dye ink or pigment? thanks!
It's an ink jet printer by Canon! :)
Amazing! What kind of printer do you use?😊
I use a Canon Pixma Pro-100!
I randomly watch this video and now I have a sudden urge of making my own cute keychains and opening a shop
It's definitely a fun, rewarding experience!
MINNIE!!!
The real star of the video! 😜
May I ask what is this paper you are using
It's shrink film by the brand 'Grafix'.
@@KatnipArt thank you!
@@KatnipArt im just wondering, do you put the shrink film into the printer so it prints out on it? cause im kinda confused on how to get images from my computer onto the shrink paper as im not that great at drawing ..
@@nicholebenn5298 Yes! I use printable shrink plastic. In terms of how to print images on the paper, you can use just about any image editing platform like Photoshop, ClipStudio, or Canva and send your files to your printer directly from there.
@@KatnipArt ahh okay thank you so much!!
These pins are adorable!!!!
dude the sponge tip was invaluable, I'm totally gonna do that whenever I try making charms! these look so good, digital is the way to go~ What kind of printer do you have? I saw it's a canon and I'm wondering if we need a specific printer to be able to get the quality you got 👀 I know it was a year ago but I totally would've entered to win! These charms are mega cute 💕
Yeah the sponge tip brush is a must for larger pieces, I always use it! I have a Canon Pixma Pro-100, but I'm sure you can get great results with other brands! I personally like Canon because the colors have always been brighter and crisper for me. Aww thank you so much for your interest! I didn't realize these would be so popular; I had a lot of folks who really wanted an ice cream kitty after the giveaway ended, so I now sell acrylic versions of them in my shop (if you're interested)! Always happy to help if you have any questions. :3
thank you
Hi! These are super cute! Just want to know. Do you draw your own designs? That's what's holding me back from making shrink plastic jewelry and accessories. I can't free draw and come up with my own designs. 😕
Yes, I design and draw everything myself. As long as you have an interest to start a fun hobby like this, don't let lack of experience stop you! If you find it hard to get inspired, think about things you love most and try to doodle or sketch them for a few minutes every day. I often get into drawing slumps myself, so my main go-to inspirations are usually food and cats, (which is where these ice cream kitties came from lol) I hope this helps! ❤
@@KatnipArt Wow, great advice! Thank you so much! I will try to take your advice.
what glue did you use?
Gorilla Glue. But any strong super glue will get the job done! ☺
@@KatnipArt do you let the glue dry b4 you dome resin?
@@Barfitorscarfit Yes! Otherwise, if the glue isn't fully dry, it'll clump in the resin.
Love how to paint the back better than brushes👌🏻Thank u❤️🙏🏻☺️
Is it necessary to use resin or can it still last without it?
Shrink plastic won't really last without some form of top coating because the ink can still bleed if it comes into contact with water. If you don't have resin, you can probably get away with using Mod Podge or a spray sealant of some kind to protect your work. But def. make some test pieces to see which top coating you like best before applying it to your main project. Hope this helped! 😄
@@KatnipArt ohh ok, thanks for the help <33
I don't have a oven what should i doo???!!i really want to make my own diy key chain... please someone help me(〒﹏〒)
Not to worry! If you don't have a convection oven to use (or a regular one) you can use a hair dryer or heat gun to shrink your plastic. It's most cost effective to use one of those instead of an oven, but they do take a bit of time to get the hang of to fully shrink the plastic the way an oven does. I hope this suggestion helped to point you in the right direction! ☺
Hi que size la carta?
I'm not sure how big the letters are, but the pin size is about 2 inches by 1.25 inches.
Ya even at 50 my colors were pretty dark like dang 😩
Yeah, shrink paper can be a tricky beast! 😬
@@KatnipArt And by lightning your colors- Do you mean like messing with the opacity levels?
@@katieee_llyn I use PhotoShop when I'm preparing my graphics, and while I'm in there I go to: Image - Adjustments - Brightness/Contrast and enter in the percentage I want in the "Brightness" section. Depending on what program you use, you might have a setting somewhere that allows you to lighten or brighten your image, so I'd try using that instead of adjusting the opacity. Otherwise, you might end up making your graphic more transparent and it won't be as crisp as an end result.
I watched the video because I’m thinking about getting that exact same bag, but saw you had a Tombow Mono Zero, I LOVE those erasers. You’ve got some cool stuff. 🤍
Thanks! It's definitely a great little backpack and has been worth every penny.
does it fit B4 notebook?
B4 is a bit too large for the Kanken mini, but Fjallraven has other backpacks that could accommodate that size!
Oh my I need some charms made for me with this print n cut shrink plastic, for both of my kids. Is this inkjet printer?
Yes, I use an inkjet printer. Most shrink paper brands will also let you know on the packaging which printer the paper is meant for. Happy Crafting!
Where did you get that cute cat keychain with the bell🥰
I made it! :3 It's available on my Etsy shop (www.etsy.com/shop/KatnipShop) and my main store: www.KatnipArt.com!
Ahhh adorable!!!
Thank you! 🥰
Yay! You’re back! 🎉 I have a few questions. What size do you make them on the computer before you print them out? Also what kind of printer do you have? Thanks for always being so helpful! Definitely make more videos like these! You do a great job! 💕
Thx so much! <333 I enlarge the individual graphics to be about 1-1.25" in size so that when they shrink, they result in being 1cm. As for my printer, I use the Canon Pixma Pro-100. I've def. got more videos in the making, I look forward to sharing them with you! :D
Awesome!
😉
Awesome. Could you tell me what printer you have?
I have a Canon Pixma Pro 100. It's quite possibly the best art printer I've ever used.
Me gustaria que tuviera subtitulos en español! Estan geniales! Saludos
Thank you for your kind words! RUclips might have a CC feature that is able to translate the videos to your country's native language, or possibly a setting that can be enabled. I'm not sure if that helps, but I hope it does! Hope all is well :)
3:00 Can i use microven here?
The best appliance (imo) for shrinking plastic is a convection oven or toaster oven. But if you don't have access to those, some people use heat guns as more affordable alternative, and there's a lot of helpful videos that can show you tricks on how to best use them to shrink plastic. That said, it's not recommended to use a microwave oven for shrink plastic because the heat doesn't affect the plastic the same way as a convection/toaster oven does and it might ruin the plastic or not shrink properly. I hope this helps! :)
Oh, wow. Do you print them directly onto plastic sheets? How do you cut them out so neatly?
I use printable shrink plastic to print the artwork on and then I just slowly cut along the edge of the design with scissors! Graphics with more rounded features are much easier to cut, but slowness is key to avoid any tears on the paper. :)
what plastic did you use?
I used a brand called Grafix, the printable shrink plastic paper.
Its lovely🥰🇲🇦
Thank you! <3
