Matchbox 20's Rob Thomas talks songwriting
I was 12 years old in 2002. I had just arrived at a boarding school in England, 2000km from home in Francr, the result of being brought up by a mother as strict but with her head constantly in the clouds. Therefore since the very beginning, she got confused with the weekends exit authorisations. While she was think she was restricting myself as much as possible, I was actually free to leave the boarding house every weekend without her being notified. Well, I took the train to London every weekend where cousins of mine aged 16-17 hid me to sleep at their house so my uncle couldn’t snitch to my mother and they showed me this city. The real London. They said to me: have you ever heard of The Libertines, they just released a single or an EP, it’s great. They put the CD on. I was stunned. What was that. Poetry + guitars + elegance and decadence. “They’re playing live tonight at the 100 Club, we have tickets and we made you a fake ID.” This concert changed my life. And even better, it was recorded and released as a live album 2 years ago. I saw them again two months later at the Marquee, at the Astoria, in rotten apartments, seedy pubs. My cousins followed them like groupies and I just had to follow my cousins. Mummy. I'm almost 35 years old, you still don't know the "mistake" you made and you still think that my weekends were studious, sporty and filled with pension activities. These weekends were worthy of the rock and roll of the Libertines from 12 to 17 years old. Thanks Mom. Thank you Laura and Filippa, bless your fantastic taste in music, your blind as fuck parents and your hormones on fire.
Writing is only one of the best therapeutic outlets there is he's right about it I write short stories and poetry
This is my favorite Billy Duffy story. He just decided he was going to be a rock star. So happy that worked out.
Wow 15 years ago. 2022 here, I’ve been listening to this man since 1999.
peter actually seems coherent here and not whispering mumbling and smacked out his nut
Carl, is sooo hot!!
Mr. Duffy was one of only a few guitar players that I actually looked forward to hearing at a live show. There's few riffs as cathartic than the opening one on the Phoenix, and when I hear it live I can almost feel myself stepping out of my own body. Yeah, Billy Duffy. Guitar player. Spectral plane gate keeper.
"you cant really step your image you better play for the peeps who dont know your music" what does pete say at the start?
1:25 piercing eyes
Such a nice guy and a great musician! I can agree 100% on his vision of music! I met him a couple of times, always very very nice! I really like his attitude. Thanks Billy and thanks to Always Outlaw!
Master Billy Duffy! Creative genius!!!
♥️
The libertines were just a band
I always worry people don’t understand Peter, he wasn’t born a junkie. He was a wide eyed poet who loved The Smiths and Suede and who after meeting Carl they managed to make their dreams come true for a couple of years, until fame and tabloids reared it’s ugly head. Thank god they’re back to who they used to be these days with the hotel in Margate and regular contact again between the band 🖤
You do realise he’s addicted to heroin here?
I would love to get chatty with Billy Duffy...I have so many questions. He inspired me to pick up the guitar after listening to the LOVE album when it was released. I still cant believe that someone could create such a great album at such a young age....even when I listen to it a day ago. Sometimes when I listen to the album I dont want to play guitar anymore but I'm reminded that we all have our own style and there is only 1 Billy Duffy.
This interview puts into words what being a writer for me feels like. I love having a idea or dream, getting a blank piece of paper and writing down a poem or verse. It's a rush.
My God i Love Guys especially with this hairstyle😘💋😘💋😘
Love Billy’s playing!!
