I will be hiking the Appalachian Trail Northbound in 2024, starting late Feb.
The Appalachian Trail is one of the most recognizable footpaths in the entire world. Covering more than 2,000 miles from Georgia all the way to Maine, the route passes through 14 states, climbing the equivalent of Mt. Everest 16 times and taking approximately 5 million steps to complete.

Emergency prunes sounds like something you would throw at a bear to distract it while you disappear. Happy Trails. Good Luck, Rick
You can never have enough emergency prunes on the trail. You never know who you'll run across in an emergency that forgot to pack their prune. 😂 I bet the hardest part was leaving home again. Im sure after getting some miles behind you, you'll feel better. Kudos to your wife and family for the support from behind the scenes, keeping things going at home, and on trail.👏👏👏
Kudos for sure! It was tough leaving them again, but good to be back in the woods.
Seems to be a popular shoe. I looked at the women's speedgoat 5, and they were comfortable in the store, but then someone told me that because they do have the thicker sole, there's more of a chance to roll your ankle. I'm sure you're aware of that. I went with the women's Altra Lone Peaks, but I don't plan on rock scrambling. Just flat dirt trails for now.
I didn't think about rolling the ankle, but that's definitely a factor. I felt a little less ankle roll in the topos. The Altra's seem to be a great shoe. I'm likely to try them next.
Nice video. You still sound very tired. I used to find that it took a full week to recover from a week in the bush. You probably need a lot more than that. Have fun. Good Luck, Rick
That 20 hours of drive time didn't help either. It definitely wasn't enough time for a full recovery.
Hope you're doing well at home. I'm sure we'll see you and your son soon. That was a lot of stuff you sent home and a lot less weight to carry. Do you know what your pack weighed after sending that home?
I started carrying more food, so it stayed around 29 pounds.
How long are you home for?
Just a couple days, but the traveling takes days to get back and forth.
Great pictures of the Three Amigos! Enjoy your time at home.
Don't know what I just saw. Premature end of an AT thru hike?
Not yet. But I am allowed to leave to support my family. I have planned on this since before I started my hike.
I’ll miss your wonderful videos. I’m sure being home is much appreciated.
Intermission
I love the train. It's the only way I travel long distances. I've never been in a plane. Even though my brother is a Captain for a commercial airline. I hope you enjoy some off trail time, but I think you're going to miss it. Keep us posted. ✌️🫶
The train was really cool. Plan to use one more often in the future.
There is a train station, on the AT in NY. Have a safe trip. Good Luck, Rick
We are going to try to use that one or one further up to meet with a buddy in NYC.
Old train stations are just neat!
Of the thousands of people that are on the trail every year, you may only be one, but each one of you has done things that nobody else has done, seen things that nobody else has seen and have stories that nobody else will have. You are definitely special to all of us. The constant up and down is so much more difficult than oblique trails, you walk so much more distance than you end up going according to the maps. Way to go!
Lunch looks good! Although I expected a place called “The Rabbit Hole” to have less meat…
I cannot express the unfathomable depths of my disappointment in the severe lack of bears in this video.
I'm loving your period accomodations. Downunda - Melbourne Australia
Something tells me you will have more bear sightings! Enjoy Harpers ferry and your time off trail!
Pretty town.🦋❤️
Awww…that ole geezer is probably grouchy about everything. Hike on!
Roller-coaster ✔️ Virginia ✔️ Beautiful views✔️✔️✔️✔️ Thats awesome, you're doing great! What was the point of the guy saying your not special walking the AT? Didn't know the was the goal, to be special. Its a special trail, and most the people hiking it are spectacular. So hes wrong. ✌️🫶 That animal under the rock wasnt a dog hiding was it? That black lab is still missing. Have a great time off trail.
Best time to get the VA blues is when you're about done. Don't worry about what a jealous jerk says. Congrats on finishing VA. Have a safe trip. Use the time to build up your protein reserves. Good Luck, Rick
Congratulations on your 1000 mile mark! Woohoo! Not so fun about the thorn. 😳
You sure are special! Wish I could do it! Thanks. I think Augie’s just ahead of you.
Anyone that is fortunate enough to be out there hiking are SPECIAL!🦋❤️
🦋❤️
Congratulations on hitting 1000 Mile mark!
Liquid sunshine. Congrats on 1000 miles. A thorn in the eye is scarry, heal fast. Happy Trails. Good Luck, Rick
I wondered how much your pack weighs now? By the sound of your footsteps, it seems like you're walking fast and forcefully. Maybe a little less speed would be easier on your feet?
The Green Tunnel of Virginia!
That is a whole lot of green! … but no mention of the emergency prune. I grow concerned.
The emergency prune is safe and alone in the food bag for now!
Sounds like a good plan. Have a safe trip. Good Luck, Rick
Awesome video
What makes your videos so fantastic is you point your phone on the trail you’re hiking, and not your face dominating the screen until the end. I mean that as a compliment to your details while video taping.
Wow Mountain Home looks very nice! You may be past me by now, but I live on South Mountain in PA between Route 16 and Route 30 crossings - if you need anything, ride to town etc...get in touch. Have enjoyed watching your videos and wish you all the best on the remainder of your adventure.
Thanks. Took a little break! I will be heading that way soon!
That stormy weather really caused a lot of issues for many on the AT. Doesn't look fun at all. People waking up with 3 inch puddles in the middle of the night, setting your tent up on nice dry, flat spot, only to wake up in a stream with all your gear soaked. Then carrying all the wet gear and wearing all the wet clothes. Its not like you can keep staying at hostels and hotels for days in a row waiting for gear to dry and storms to pass. I feel bad for all of you AT hikers. Is this pretty normal weather or more rain than usual? You seem to be moving right along Taco. Way to go. I did knock on wood for you when you said you hadnt fallen yet. Lol Be safe, make the best of it and prayers for better weather ahead. ✌️🫶
They say it rains over 25% of the days you are on a thruhike on average.

Hey 5Million, thanks for the lovely photos of Front Royal, I'm disappointed that I missed the courthouse when I passed through. Your comments about being irritated for no good reason struck a chord with me as a few times during my hike I found myself acting in a "Cranky" manner around others for no good reason, I regretted it later and don't know why I behaved that way as its not in my nature?. Each morning when I wake I get my coffee and sit down to watch your latest video, I love them. Thanks, Downunda (Melbourne Australia), AT 2002.
Thanks Downunda!
Curious. What is in your thumbnail picture?
I think that's something Luke a construction generator. It was at the wayside in the parking lot.
🦋❤️
The tall grass is probably loaded with ticks. As I recall, there is a view point towards the northern end of Skyline Drive, where on a clear day, you can see DC. I don't know if the AT goes close to the point. Heavy rain is a great reason to take a ZERO(on or off trail). If you have the time, check out the caverns and auto museums. Happy Trails. Good Luck, Rick
Holy cats, what a cool place. Food looked delicious too. ✌️🫶

What a pretty section and beautiful day. Sunset was stunning. Thanks for sharing, I love following along. Than you
Hope you dont mind, but I had to take a few screen shots of that sunset. Just gorgeous. From watching others AT videos as well, personally, I think I like the Shenandoahs best so far. The forest and views have been beautiful and the trail looks nice too. But Im sitting here so I could be very wrong. Lol Whats been your favorite section of the AT so far Taco?
I've had several favorites so far, but the section after max patch down on the river has been my favorite so far. The Smokies were really cool as well.
@@5millionsteps I imagine you've seen so many spectacular things it's hard to pin point one or two things. Happy trails
Beautiful sunset! Happy Trails
Beautiful sunset!
You're on vacation, take it easy if your body tells you. My deer herd don't let me get that close even when I'm feeding them. They will look at me through a window to ask for corn but they don't let me get closer than 30'. Good video. Nice trail. Have fun. Good Luck, Rick
