As parts of the country dive into deep drought, a lot of people are feeding hay for the first time, or at a time we are not used too. I try to explain the how and why of rolling out hay and calculating that the animals are getting an adequate amount of forage to eat. Stick around to the end for some delicious grilling tips

    Based on the black cow's fill out and her age, I would start looking into genetics more than how to finish the cow.

      Yes I fully agree. She was the result of a bred cow we bought when we first moved to the farm. We are trying to breed for smaller framed, easier finishing, slick hided red cows. Its just a painfully long time to transition and herd with culling and breeding. Especially when its such a small operation with little room for culling.

    I don’t know how long you have been raising cattle, but I have been for a little over twenty years now. It’s good that your cattle are tame and come to you when you call them, but there is such a thing as too friendly.This is a lesson I learned the hard way. That little heifer will one day be a big girl who may not exactly know her place. My first pet cow became so overbearing that I couldn’t enter the field without a hotshot and ultimately ended up having to get rid of my favorite cow. I’ll grant you it isn’t guaranteed she will turn out this way, but I thought I should give you a warning

    the top third of a blade of grass has most of the calories? I wonder why its concentrated like that

    • @eversba
      @eversba 28 дней назад

      Energy in grass is primarily stored at the growing tips (or meristems) because this is where the most active cell division and growth occurs, allowing the plant to readily access the stored energy for new leaf and stem development; this energy is primarily in the form of carbohydrates produced through photosynthesis in the leaves, which are then transported to the growing points for utilization

      I want to add. To any consumer that might be reading this, Blackfoot is not something that would hurt you unless you eat a cow that died from it and that would be very difficult to miss diagnosis because Blackfoot hits the whole herd all at once.

      That's right after weaning. It comes from bare ground in shaded areas. They die in 4 hours after exposure. 😢.

      @@eversba Do your herefords or other breeds ever get pinkeye? I have communicated with others on you tube that have Hereford Cattle and they really don't seem to have pinkeye issues. I know at one time it was a problem...just curious. I know Herefords are extremely calm docile and tame animals.

      14 acres, which we subdivide anywhere from 21 to 75 daily paddocks depending on the time of year
