Free Solo Ascent of Corkscrew 5.8 - Kenneth Dougher climbs Corkscrew

He seemed a bit sad and decided to put up the first full ascent of this jagged hands-crack that transitions onto mossy slabs and then finishes with an airy traverse past a wedged block above the clean face. (Cracked Heart 5.6) We were trying to figure out how to get down when Ken mentioned he might do a big solo soon. I asked what climb and he said he was working the moves on Corskcrew. He had lead it with Eric and some of the other guys a few times, and was top rope soloing it every few days to perfect the moves. He told me his uncle, Kenneth Dougher, and Ron Matthews originally made history with the first ascent bac...

    This is one of my favorites at stover for so many reasons. Probably the best quality rock in the crag from top to bottom with wide variety of placements, so it’s a great first/practice lead. It’s pretty easy graded but the face steep and smooth enough that you can take practice falls on gear with a top rope back up with little risk of decking on ledges or protrusions.

    Climbed at the Gap in the early nineties. We used to say “other than the approach down the interstate, the traffic noise, loose rock, and poison ivy … it’s awesome!” Still has the adventure feel and glad to see some are still enjoying it. All the best.

      The bolts far away aren't the problem, the problem is not extending the anchor point out past the ledge.

    • @chongo7723
      @chongo7723 2 месяца назад

      Terrible set up. You have to always extended your anchor point over the edge of the rock face. This is how you accidently cut your rope and fall to your death. If you're going to post a set up, post something that won't get someone else killed.

    • @ReachForInfinite
      @ReachForInfinite 7 дней назад

      A lot of routes have bolts like this, I think the bolters just choose a convenient spot with bare rock that’s still a reasonable distance from the face, then you just extend your anchor as need be.

Start by going up the stairs, scramble up the rock stair trail through the boulder field, about 5 mins to the walls, then hike left for about 20 mins to reach the area in the video.
