Apprentice's Log - Episode II: Training our Red-tailed Hawk
This video is part of a falconry series from an apprentice falconer. In this episode, we show what the process of training (manning) our first red-tailed hawk looked like. The first step, getting the hawk to take food from the glove, can take an average of 24-48 hours. Next, getting the hawk to jump to the glove, took us over a week -- this depends on the bird and the experience level of the falconer. After he started jumping to the glove consistently, we started moving farther and farther away from the perch. Using a creance (leash), we continued the training process outdoors. Finally, we did the first free flight session after four weeks with Fievel.

Apprentice's Log - Episode I: Trapping our First Red-tailed Hawk
Просмотров 8 тыс.4 года назад
This video is part of a falconry series from an apprentice falconer. In this episode, we show what the process of trapping our first red-tailed hawk (Buteo jamaicensis) looked like. This is only a glimpse into the hours of tracking and failed attempts. Juvenile red-tailed hawks have an upwards of 80% mortality rate in their first year. Each hawk a falconer traps in the wild helps ensure one mor...

Never reward the bird on the ground ,bird should be following on in the last ten trees you past , ive using the lure dont walk towards the bird let it come to you and a bigger bit of food on the lure ,as it will come to you if your a mile away but won't come to the glove a mile away for a leg you can reduse the food on the lure gradually

Very nice!! Hoping to take my falconry test in Ohio this summer before the Aug 15th trapping season starts. Starting a little old at 46 years, but it’s been my dream forever. Finally out of the Army and have my own home. Love your bird and especially love the Red Tailed Hawk. I did volunteer at a Raptor Rehab Center for 5 years which really helped me learn the different raptor species behaviors. We had from a Kestrel to a Bald Eagle as program birds. And the usual Red Tailed, Great Horned, Screech and other Ohio native raptors. No Peregrine though. Great work on the training and great video work also. Kept the bird in frame really well.

Why are you casting him and calling him back for a tidbit so many times. You already did this during creance training. This is his first free flight. I understand casting him a couple times to see if he comes back but after that let him start hunting, beat the brush, flush him up a meal, then if he does not catch anything call him back for a tidbit then start again tomorrow. Also keep him from going to the ground so often, hold his Jesse's and then cast him in a tree instead when you are ready.if you let him off the fist whenever he wants to then he is now training you instead of you training him.

I’m a new apprentice, it’s definitely a labor of love that requires 7 days a week, 365 days a year commitment. It’s not a hobby or a fad, they’re not and should NEVER be looked at as pets. If your not going to hunt your bird, you shouldn’t become a falconer.

Sorry for the late reply. I completely agree with Barry, though. These birds are definitely not pets. As far as tips for getting started, I would suggest making sure you have good communication with your mentor. If you haven't found one in your area yet or if you have not taken your exam, it might be worth looking for a local falconry group (check Facebook) to get started. In New York, the exam is not super easy, so making sure you put in enough time studying will be important. We had a very eager friend fail the exam, unfortunately.

If you ever trap again, try finding some dirt roads and (gently) throwing the trap out the window. Then, keep driving a ways until you can turn around and pull off a distance away. This makes the birds less suspicious, and more likely to go for the trap. Using binoculars, you can be more sure when a hawk is trapped. Then just drive up and do your thing. Also, I don't know when you trapped your hawk, but if it was close to when you posted this video, try trapping a little earlier if you can. This means there will be more birds to trap, and they will still be adjusting to life without their parents. This means that they will be hungrier, and more likely to go after the trap. Just don't go trapping too early, or you'll get a bird without a lot of hunting experience.

Thank you! We will definitely avoid the busier roads next time. We ended up catching Fievel in an area that was quiet in terms of traffic. It was definitely late in the season when we caught him. We are aiming to go out as soon as the season starts in NY this time. We appreciate all of these suggestions, especially about driving away to avoid suspicion! :-)

Did you end up taking your test? After you pass your exam in NY they give you a list of mentors in the state. Josh just reached out to all of the people within an hour's drive. Please let me know if you have any other questions! Sorry for the super late response, a lot happened since we posted these videos. We hope to get back into making videos again soon.

Good job. To discourage him going to ground I wouldn't feed him for coming to you from the ground, only feed when he returns from a tree. He will learn quickly. Congratulations on doing so well on his first free flight. He was following on well and responded well to calls for him to return. When using the dummy bunny lure start him off from a metre or so and once he realises there is food extend the distance as you did on the creance. Hope you don't mind the advice :-)
