The Philosopher Who Changed Language Forever | Ludwig Wittgenstein
Просмотров 35 тыс.День назад
What if the way we understand the world, express ideas, and even think is shaped by the structure of language itself? Ludwig Wittgenstein, one of the most revolutionary philosophers of the 20th century, believed that the greatest philosophical problems stemmed from our misunderstandings of language. His work transformed modern philosophy-not once, but twice. In this video, we explore Wittgenste...
How Power Shapes Reality | The Philosophy of Michel Foucault

Michel Foucault, one of the most influential philosophers of the 20th century, argued that power doesn’t just oppress-it produces. It creates knowledge, enforces norms, and defines what we consider true. It operates in schools, hospitals, prisons, and workplaces, not through brute force but through discipline, surveillance, and the structures that tell us what is right, wrong, normal, or devian...

So, why were Russell’s ideas considered dangerous, and why do they still matter now more than ever? Let’...

The Paradox of Freedom - Jean-Paul Sartre's Existentialism Explained (Philosophy)
Просмотров 3,5 тыс.3 месяца назад
Have you ever felt overwhelmed by the sheer number of choices in your life? Or felt that nagging pressure to make the 'right' decision, knowing that the path you choose could define who you are? That feeling-of both freedom and burden-is at the heart of Jean-Paul Sartre’s philosophy. Sartre believed that we, as human beings, are 'condemned to be free.' It sounds contradictory, right?.. But here...

If Spinoza had been born in India, he would have been considered a saint, a great soul, just as Gautama Buddha, and worshipped in shrines and temples built to him.

It is not true that intellectuals avoided conflict at the time of the first world war. Most European intellectuals, like Wittgenstein, where consumed by and complicit in the warmongering public craziness of the time. In Philosophy only Russell was a pacifist. The intellectuals’ enthusiasm for war is one of their most shameful acts.

It's not "god or nature" as in God is nature, but rather "God or nature" as in it's one or the other. We are connected. But it's not in nature. We're connected or one in God. If there's one there cannot be the other. Fwiw

W was interesting. His Tractatus purported to delineate the limits of language against the background of mysticism, however W himself failed to access the mystical as living transformation. He was no mystic but merely a philosopher. The Tractatus was named after Spinoza’s Tractatus Theological Politicus, but W failed to accomplish Spinoza’s level of authenticity as a man and as a philosopher. He rejected his early philosophy of the Tractatus and abandoned the pose of a philosophical shaman. His Investigations are a hodge-podge of disconnected ambiguities. Since Wittgenstein philosophy has degenerated. Wittgenstein did nothing for philosophy or mankind.

The title is misleading. When I was a very young person many years ago at Cambridge i was impressed for a while ( a few weeks) by the blue book. My DOS at the time who knew Wittgenstein back in the day told me that he (Wittgenstein) told him that he (Wittgenstein) was only treating certain kinds of stomach ache and that he ( my to be DOS) needn't bother to come to his ( W's) seminars because he ( my to be DOS) didn't suffer from the kind of stomach ache that he ( W) treated. So true. Rather limited our W. Linguistics ( socio, psycho, semantics, pragmatics.....) has moved on....many more interesting people since W. I think W is like the the famous snake with its tail in its mouth -- full of tautologies and not been around people or literature much.

"I am sure you heard me. I am just not sure you understood me." It all comes down to the, at least, tripartite structure of communication? Words (~7%), voice (~38%), body language (~55%) have been touted as full communication, but is it really just that? As with the example of "wrong", doesn't context actually frame the communication in such a way as to supply its actual meaning or at least its intent?

I've always found Wittgenstein's thoughts on language lead nowhere interesting. A handbook of style teaches us more than his language games and might even serve a purpose. As for his take on reality he is so clubfooted you wonder how he made it through life.

Excellent and clear summary of LW. I've never seen a discussion of George Lakoff's work on metaphors. There is a section of *Metaphors We Live By* that outlines his epistemology/theory of truth. Is he taken seriously in philosophy? His ideas seem to build on Wittgenstein.

Freedom and consequences can conflict with each other. We are not "free" in the sense that every choice we make will never cause us to suffer any harmful consequences. We can choose to resist oppression even if it results in unjustified punishment.

Random genetic traits, experiences, and personality traits can determine our preferences, and these determining factors are not by choice. You didn't choose how your parents DNA would combine, or what the external world will always present you with, or what your favorite color is. And in that sense, to some degree, we are not in control of our preferences, personality, and identity. I'm not stating that we have no control or free will to choose, but it's a matter of degree. We can change and become a radically different person. So, it's possible, but I'm guessing that most people retain much of their personality and preferences their entire life.

A person like this would have trouble with gifted students who know and feel universal truths beyond left-brained linguistic descriptions. The more intuitive an educated person is the better they will be able to reach the emotion and feeling centers of others to convince about truths that lie beyond description.
