Sibs on a Trip
Добавлен 26 ноя 2017
Hey! We’re Shannon and Kevan, otherwise known as Sibs on a Trip! Follow along as we attempt to thru-hike the Pacific Crest Trail in 2018. Our third sib, Brendan, is going to join us for as many miles as he can, too. See you on trail...
NEW Big Agnes Scout 2 Carbon
All three of us sibs got together to check out the new Big Agnes Scout 2 Carbon! Luckily, it rained a lot that night so we could see how it might perform on trail in less-than-ideal conditions. Overall, we think it's an AWESOME tent. One quick update: we let it sit outside all night in the storm, and when we checked it this morning, it was completely dry (mesh pockets and all).
Using the footprint will definitely go a long way to keep it in good shape, and smart site selection should make for a comfortable night's sleep. We're excited to take it for a spin on the PCT this summer in NorCal and Washington! Shannon will use the Scout; Brendan and Kevan will probably use the Big Agnes Tiger Wa...

At long last! Thanks for hanging in there with us while we took FOREVER to edit and upload this video. We had some unexpected twists and turns in our adventure as we entered the Sierra. Overuse injuries and missing our family got the better of us. We gave it a lot of thought, and we eventually decided to return home after rounding out the summer with 1,000 total miles on the PCT. Before we coul...

Our apologies for taking so long to share this video with you! Some of you reached out to us, concerned that we may have gotten off trail. Rest assured that we’re still out here doing GREAT! We promise we won’t keep you hanging too long before our next video (Tehachapi to Lone Pine). Yes - we made it through the desert and are pressing on to see what the beautiful Sierra Nevada has in store for...

Reaching the summit of Mount Baden-Powell was the highlight of this last section! We also passed the 400 mile mark, met new (and reconnected with old) friends, and enjoyed a nice, long weekend in the friendly mountain town of Wrightwood. This last section was CRAZY! Caught in a snowstorm north of Big Bear, sweltering desert heat, our first 20-mile day, and much, much more. A quick note about the snowstorm. We received ~3-5” of snow overnight, and the forecast called for freezing rain all day long. While other hikers pushed onward, for us, the right decision was to stay put and take an on-trail zero. That way, we knew we’d stay ...

We’re back in action with a brand new “siesta schedule” after a break in Palm Springs and Vegas! We started night hiking to beat the intense desert heat, and saw some interesting night crawlers along the way. An extra special shout out goes to Lisa and Mike, whose friendship has been the nicest surprise on trail so far :-) Stay tuned for more, and thanks for watching! Music Credit: “Soulful Str...

From the summit of Mount San Jacinto, to the 200 mile mark, to the desert floor - section B in California threw everything at us! Good times on the PCT. Hi your video is really helpful, and I’m thinking of buying a used one of these. Did it live up to your expectations?
Hey I see they stop making this tent how is your guy's holding up ? I would really have liked to have bought this tent at 11 oz but for some reason they stop making it
I know it's been years since you posted this, but could the "forklift" spiders be solifuges? They're an arachnid that Isn't a spider or a scorpion; and while they are non-venomous, they've got big jaws that can cause some short term pain if they did chomp down on you, but they're typically shy, and run away quickly. The quick running lends to one of their many common names, wind scorpions (...as in they run like the...). Their other common names are camel spiders (from the prevalence of their Middle Eastern relatives), and sun spiders. They seem to be attracted to light in the night time. The first time I saw one & got an ID of it was at the Little Jimmy Trail Camp (a spot on the PCT here in SoCal, between Mt Baden-Powell & Islip Saddle, near the 1st spot (northbound) on the PCT after Baden-Powell with a water source (Little Jimmy Springs; 0.2 miles east of the trail camp, below Windy Gap); I was cooking at night, & a solifuge stopped in my headlamp's light & froze. Kinda scary looking & cool at the same time. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solifugae
11oz? I'm seeing 1 lb 1 oz online...
Where did you use it? I don't see any more videos after this
I wish that front door had an inner mesh door as well as the outer non-mesh door for ventilation.
How many nights did you use it last year ?
What is mileage?
Great video, would love a follow up video, but that was great!
Can’t wait for your next video! You guys are awesome. Inspiring and funny. It’s made me think I can do it...backpack
Think from France 🇫🇷 😉
Hey, whatever happened to you guys? Did you ever get back out there. I'm kind of worried.
Hey Gee Vee sorry to give you a scare! The unexpected late snow melt in 2019 canceled our plans for a NorCal section hike. We just don’t have a ton of experience hiking in steep, late season snow and didn’t want to chance it. Then we made plans to hike across Isle Royale NP in May 2020 but we all know what happened this year...we promise you haven’t seen the last of us! ❤️ We’re all hanging in there and hope you’re doing well too!
How did that whippet work out? Do you have a link?
Great job on the review! I may be buying one! Thanks a ton!!
@Dan Becker, did you end up buying this tent, and if not, why not? Thanks
I love your intros with the songs. Cracks me up! I keep trying to get my brother to join me on a section hike; seeing you two gives me motivation to up my pestering game. Hahaha.
At 2:!6 in your video, can you tell me if that tab in the middle of the storage pocket is sewn in permanently or does it have a toggle or something to let it down? Thanks !
Sorry for my slow reply. The tab/pocket is sewn in and is not adjustable 👍👍
Excited to see a followup when you have it on trail!
Thank you for some Real World (I mean rain) testing.....Yeap, this is the lightest version of the material, meaning the thinnest. So I would not bring the dog in, or any other animal for that matter into the tent...I have a heavier scout version and you can lengthen the pole and turn it on a diagonal to the side so that you have a larger entry access and it will still hold.....Be the big sister and tell your little bros to take em' shoes off!....I think the concerns about condensation and the splish/splash are valid. I would not put anything on those pockets if it is raining. Years ago I read a Scout review (pretty much they are all the same basic design) which called for a little bit larger awnings so that the drip from the roof would splash away further and it would help a bit more when raining sideways; this would come at a minimum additional weight cost.
Finally... someone did a review on this tent. I saw it online thru REI, but no one had a review. Thank you.
Question... any holes yet? The DFC is 0.34 oz/yd2... kinda on the thin side. It has me concern... any thoughts? Side note: Cuban Fiber is easy to repair with their tape. 👍😎🏕
Most welcome! Thanks for watching 😃
No holes yet but we’ll be taking it out for a section hike in NorCal in early July. Stay tuned for an update!

@@sibsonatrip4724 thanks... look forward to hearing about it
Question for anyone who has the Scout 2... do you think it would be possible to set up with two fixed length poles? Any insight would be much appreciated!
Definitely! I think adjustable poles would be more practical for on trail use though, given how rare a perfectly level campsite is. Plus, I wonder how fixed length poles would work in sandy terrain. If they sink down a bit, it would be nice to be able to extend the poles further to get the tightest possible pitch. Just thinking out loud!!
Ok, so I got the BA Scout platinum (pretty much the same tent just not DCF) and I found that when the winds were high that the front and rear guy lines slipped and I lost my pitch, did you find that the guy lines were slipping at all on yours? I have the same guy line tensioners on my platinum. Here's a video for reference of it: ruclips.net/video/6YSjzLCDSp0/видео.html
Oh no! We didn’t have that problem at all. In fact, the front and back guy lines were so snug that we had to put a good amount of effort into pulling them. I’d look into exchanging yours, maybe it’s just a fluke with that one tent?
@@sibsonatrip4724 yeah I've already contacted BA about it and they are sending me new guy line tensioners so we'll see how that goes, I was just wondering if it was a big problem with those line lock 3 type tensioners. I'm glad it's working for you guys though! Wish I had gotten the DCF version though haha
Idk the platinum version is just as awesome I’m sure!! Out of curiosity what’s the weight on that? Pretty darn close to the dyneema version if I remember correctly?
@@sibsonatrip4724I weighed it at 20.9oz, so not too shabby honestly
I bet a lot of the water came from your jackets touching the inside and transferring the water onto the inside too. Super light weight, would have its place, but I prefer a side entry.
Good point! And I hear you on the side entry. Do you like the BA tiger wall?
@@sibsonatrip4724 I've seen a few reviews and it looks really nice too. I don't remember the weight on it off hand, I think the 2p has dual doors and vestibules and the shape maintains more vertical walls. I really like your tent too but I think the a-frame style is almost a nod to minimalism, like a tarp above above a bivy, but a tent. The weight has to just be amazing on your though, I have a sierra designs flashlight fl2 and love it but would love it 2 pounds plus lighter weight too. :)
Plus the ba tent has poles and I like to us my trekking poles for other things around camp
No mesh front door man that will be like a oven in warm weather. Wonder why they didnt add a mesh door? Dont think you will like this in warm weather. Plus, condensation is going to be a beast in that configuration. Id say return it and get the zpack duplex at least there will be ventilation.
Yeah I really do wish they would’ve just made a mesh door with a proper vestibule. It couldn’t have added more than a few ounces!
I'm so excited that you're headed back to the PCT. I'm a solo (older) female section hiker. I'm doing section C in SoCal in a few weeks and plan on hitting a piece up north in July too. Maybe I'll run into you. I love your fun videos--especially your music selections.
Thank you!! Good luck to you and we hope you have a blast on section C 🎉 Do you have any particular sections in mind for further north?
Last August I did J section in Washington. It was spectacular, but the fires in Canada sent a lot of smoke down. So, this year I'm going to watch the fire season and pick my section(s) against that situation.
I'm pretty certain that those side "pockets" aren't intended as pockets.... If you check out z-pack's duplex you'll see a similar design. Your one con listed was a concern that condensation would run down into the mesh on the sides, when in fact that is by design, in order to allow light-weight single-wall construction, while giving condensation a way out of the interior rather than trapping the moisture inside.
Well on the promotional video Big Agnes made, they advertised them as pockets for clothes and gear...🤷🏼♀️ We weren’t concerned about the mesh getting wet (of course condensation has to go somewhere!) but we were concerned that it may have been dripping inside the tent, too. Not a dealbreaker for sure. It’s a great tent!
Yayyyy! Sibs on a Trip! Good video! Thanks for the info. Easy set up? I’m really tall so loving the room inside. Btw, mind blown. Didn’t know there were twin bros. 😂👯♂️
Lol! Surprise!! 😃 And yes it was a super easy set up. This coming from someone who struggled to get the z-packs pitch just right.
Ok. I have to ask. I was in Pinecrest, CA a few days ago and I think I ran into one of your bros. I mean, maybe not. But, I’m such a RUclips novice that I didn’t know how to message u privately. Don’t think it’s an option. I have a pic of all of us at the Steam Donkey. Maybe I can send. Idk.
@@racheljensen2902 Not either of my brothers - we're all still in Ohio! Would love to see the pic though! :)
3 wet people breathing hot air in a 2 person single wall tent is going to create condensation. It looks as though it is designed right as the condensation seemed to run down the side onto the mesh. I'm thinking with 1-2 people and it will likely have far less condensation.
Our thoughts exactly 👍👍
Heyyy!! Does this mean a trip is coming soon???? Hoppy Easter!!
You know it, fellow DMB fan! NorCal in July and WA in August on the PCT. Just some sections, and the Buckeye Trail in Ohio in the meantime...but we’re excited!
@@sibsonatrip4724 Whhahooo!! Can't wait to watch! I'm hoping to do a section on the AT in June.
@@Flame44 Awesome!! Hope you have a great trip. Happy Easter!
Awesome finally
Looks nice. Good to see a new video
Hey you outta do twins trek the pct!!! I did not know u had another kevin look a like!! Wow! I will look for you in July!!! Awesome!!!❤❤❤😀❤
Amazing vid, Wal-Mart Greeter! Sibs on a Trip are back!!!!! :D
😂
back on trek (this year)?
Yes! Not til July but we’ll be out there! 😃
Loving the sun set thank you for the view
Great videos. Thanks for making them. I'm a 62 year old male that is hoping to section hike from Campo to Interstate 10 starting in about a month.
Thank you so much! Best of luck to you with your section hike!! 👍👍
Good Job you guys! How exciting this whole adventure must have been ,cant wait for ours in 2023. Love how you keep the vids so real.
Hey thanks Matt. We appreciate you watching! Document your thru in ‘23! 😃😃
You're back! Yay! Sad to hear what happened in your description, but you went out after finishing some of the most beautiful parts of the PCT. Any plans to do more on a LASH journey? I'm attempting a thru in 2019 - wish me luck! Any tips?
Hey we’re so sorry for the slow response! Best of luck to you this summer!! Our best advice would be to rest when you need it, but try to keep zeroes to a minimum. We always got sucked into checking out all of the awesome trail towns and it made us realize that if we actually wanted to complete the thru, we’d need to get a move on it. We admit, we took a good number of side-vacations and it made keeping our trail legs really difficult. That being said, we loved and appreciated the adventure we had, even though it was cut short and mixed in with all those distractions 😅
Also - yes!! We’re getting back out there this July and August to do some sections in NorCal and WA. Maybe we’ll cross paths!!!
I was sitting here getting pumped about a mid July Kearsarge Pass>> Whitney Portal jaunt. But I watched you two fight the skeeters...no bueno. Sooo...August it is.
Yes they were FEROCIOUS! August sounds like a good plan!
I love the Sierras, but in every trip there comes a point where you’ve gotten what you wanted to get out of the trip, and you’re ready to head out. I usually get there by day 4... Thanks for posting this, I was wondering about y’all.
Sorry for a stupid question. How much weight did you lose at the end of hike. The reason i am asking is i am little north of trail shape weight. If i can lose some extra lb during the hike, it would help on my feet and knees.
You guys should be so proud of everything you accomplished, well done! Plus your videos are easily the best PCT videos I've seen! We're signed up to hike the PCT 2019 so hopefully you come back, would love to cross paths and hike with you guys!!
Byron McDonald Hey thank you! Hopefully we’ll have the chance to follow your 2019 hike - best of luck to you! We’re definitely planning to get back out there sometime next year so yes! Fingers crossed that we meet on trail.
AMAZING!!! Great job! Thanks for taking us on your journey!! Family always comes first. The trail will await your return! hope you keep in touch once in a while. I'm hiking the Delaware Water gap in May,you guys should join me!
Hey that’s awesome!! We’re embarrassed to say we’ve never heard of it - we’ll have to look it up! Think of all the DMB we’d listen to! 😅
@@sibsonatrip4724 LOl, don't be embarressed! There are many trails (local) that I never heard of! Hit the DWG & then a DMB concert at the Waterfront !!! Would make great spring/summer plans! happy Holidays!
This video was worth the wait! And so sorry about your grandfather! (I'm a grandfather, too...and, I'm sure, like your grandfather, I hope to be around a long time, too!). Sadly, the "real" (modern human) world has...very real impact upon our lives and certain ones you can't ignore. But, I am so glad you are sharing your hike on the PCT! And...I have a very strong fear of heights. I also like the way you two work together! Very enjoyable! And I'm looking forward to your next video or any other adventures you wish to share!
Thanks Allen! Much appreciated. 😃
Glad to see you back , you guys are always so happy , I really enjoy the videos .
Thanks!! 😃
Yes!!! So proud of you guys!!! I have a legit fear of heights but push myself but NEVER this much wow!! My favorite quote was Kevin said "This definitely pushes the limit of the excitement I like to have" lol way to go!! This is the only time in my life I have cheered for Ohio, being from Michigan. I'm glad i found you on Instagram and knew that you were ok. So sorry about your Grandpa 😥 praying for you and your family. I've lost both of my grandpas so I feel yah on that for sure. Once again goooo team awesome!!! Looking forward to more videos if you go back someday. Love your fun and realness!! Blessings!
Thank you! 🤗 We definitely plan to get back out there, at least for some sections now and then. Thanks again for following along and for all your positive/encouraging comments!
You two dropped off so abruptly. Glad to see you two back!
Having grown up in Ohio I was rooting for you two!
Nobody EVER need apologize for getting off the PCT. More people have summited Mount Everest than have completed the PCT! It's THAT hard!!
Thanks for the encouragement! 😊
