Back in the early 80's, from the first apartment I ever rented in Lincoln Park, one my favorite Saturday pastimes in summer was to bike along the lakefront, starting at Fullerton, and follow the bike paths south to Hyde Park. Ribs N' Bibs, on 53rd, was usually my lunch in Hyde Park (sometimes Valois too) with a couple hours of enjoying the view of Chicago's skyline (and occasionally a regular group of bikini-clad sweeties who often caught some sun) from Promontory Point afterwards, before I headed back up the path to Lincoln Park. Man, those were prime days for me. I was just getting by in my first apartment, didn't have a dollar to spare, but lord, if I could, I'd go back to those days in a heartbeat!

I see you were in the neighborhood I spent some of the best years of my life in during this video: Lincoln Park. I instantly recognized the Big Apple Finer Foods market and the Reebie Storage building, which is still looking good with its Egyptian style, when you were driving south of Fullerton on Clark. I lived at Dayton and Webster back in the day, over by Oz Park, and used to do all of my grocery shopping at the Big Apple. I can't estimate how many times I've walked this block of Clark. In fact, I still do. Every May, I come back to Lincoln Park for a 2 week vacation, and I buy all of my groceries for the stay at the Big Apple, retracing the same steps to and from my Airbnb rental as I did to my Dayton Street apartment, as a young man over 40 years ago. Can't wait to be back!

I still recognize quite a bit of Evanston as I used to ride my bike through it back in the days when I lived on Eastlake Terrace in Rogers Park. I used to love biking around the Northwestern campus as well as the general Evanston lakefront area. Such a lovely area. I always tell myself I'm coming back as a Northwestern student in my next life. The only Big 10 school located directly on a Great Lake. I want to say I also miss those rainy days in the Chicago area, like you were driving through in this video. Where I'm at in the world, we seldom ever get much below 70 degrees nor do we get all day rains all that often. When we do get the rare confluence when it's about 72 and raining all day, I like to get out a light blanket, snuggle under it on top of my bed, and pretend I'm trying to ward off the chills in my Lincoln Park apartment, while falling asleep to the sound of the rain, like I used so many years ago. So relaxing!

At 12:54 in this video, you drive by the Trinity United Methodist Church in Wilmette. This church is noted for being seen twice in the first (1990) "Home Alone" Christmas movie, but of particular interest to old-time Chicagoans, the memorial garden within the church grounds is the final resting place of Frazier Thomas, the beloved and warmly-remembered WGN TV personality and Wilmette resident who was one of the hosts on "Bozo's Circus" and the host of "Garfield Goose and Friends" and "Family Classics".

Thank you so much for this video. You passed where the Norridge Axle roller rink was at 17:05. As I mentioned once before, this roller rink, which closed in '86, has been repurposed as a Family Dollar/Dollar Tree store. Prior to this, it was a Chuck E. Cheese knock-off. Last May, after having just endured an 8 hour flight to Chicago a couple days before, my sister and I drove the exact route you followed to get to this Dollar Tree store. It had been over 40 years since I had been in the building that was the Axle, and I was looking forward to being in it again after all the time that had passed. I just wanted to be in the building again, just for old-times sake. You have to understand the Hub/Axle (it was known as the Hub until the 70's) was a legendary roller rink that still holds quite a few memories for those (including myself) who skated there in their youth. Many who skated at the Axle met their spouses there. Skating at the Norridge Axle was guaranteed fun for all who laced on a pair of skates. About the only things recognizable now from its roller rink days are the wooden rafters and some areas of the walls. There is nothing evident that would indicate the building once housed a beloved roller rink. The rink itself was bisected by the Dollar Tree and Joann Fabrics. Directly south of the Axle was the Maurice Lenell cookie factory. Lenell's cookies were a huge brand in Chicago for decades. They were particularly known for their annual Christmas cookie assortments. Lenell's has been gone for many years now, but like the Norridge Axle, they still evoke many special memories for legions of Chicagoans. So many memories for old-time Chicagoans in the 4500 North block of Harlem Avenue!

Your videos are gold for me. The second girl who I ever dated in my life, (who I met at the Norridge Axle roller rink back in '82) was from Glenview. Glenview has obviously changed a lot in the last 40+ years, but there is still plenty to make it recognizable to someone with familiarity with the village. There used to be a great candy store north on Waukegan, just past the intersection of Glenview Road. I think it was called Cora Lee candies. They had the best English toffee. Of course the Glenview Metra/Amtrak station is looking much the same. It's great being able to view the Chicagoland area through your camera. While I make it home just once a year in spring, these videos are the next best thing I have than actually being there.

Shortly after you drove through the intersection of Golf and Milwaukee, maybe less than a mile after, you passed by the Salvation Army thrift store, on your left. This building holds many memories for some children and young adults (of a certain age) who grew up in the area, as its first purpose was the Axle Roller Rink, from the mid-70's to 1984. I spent a good chunk of my youth skating around the Axle's hardwood floors, along with its sister rink in Norridge on Harlem Avenue. Anytime I pass by that Salvation Army store now, or the Norridge rink (it's now a Family Dollar/Dollar Tree store), I immediately recall the special memories that these long-gone roller rinks still elicit in my mind. Easily the best times of my life. I met many girls skating at both these rinks, sometimes getting my heart broken by them, but to be fair, I broke a few hearts myself back in the day. The Milwaukee Avenue Axle closed in August '84, after that it was a Syms clothing store. I'm not sure when the Salvation Army thrift moved in, but they've been at this location for several years now. Thank you for posting this video and bringing back the memories!

Thank you for this video! It brings back some cherished memories for me. I worked for 9 years ('79-'88) at the northwest corner of N. Michigan and E. Pearson, (875 N. Michigan), right across the street from the Water Tower and Water Tower Place, for the high-end luxury retailer I.Magnin. In all the jobs I've held in my life, I can say working at I.Magnin easily put me every weekday in one of the most sophisticated, opulent, and trendiest locales in the world. Boul Mich was quite the worldly destination in the 80's. During my lunch breaks, I would often dine at a cafeteria in the subterranean level of (as it was known then) the John Hancock Center or occasionally in summer, brown bag it and lunch amid the spectacular setting of the Oak Street Beach, which was a short walk from my workplace. While the truth of that time of my life was that I was a general laborer working hard to afford the rent on my small studio apartments in Lincoln Park, then later Rogers Park, if I could, I'd go back to that era in a heartbeat, for I was young then with many hopes and dreams still burning. I didn't have a lot of excess money, but looking back, my days as a 20's-something man, living in Chicago, were the best ones of my life.

The second apartment I ever rented as a young man back in the 80's was a studio on Eastlake Terrace, across the street from the Juneway Terrace Beach. $350 a month got me a direct lake view from its windows, plus heat and water. Electricity was only $15 a month. That studio, as well as that general area, as it existed in the 80's, holds quite a few good memories for me. I was on Eastlake last May 2023, and it's sad to see how all three beaches along the street, (Juneway, Rogers, and Howard) have all been filled in with boulders. One could actually swim at these beaches back in the day.

You started on Western just north of some of the best ice cream in the world, Rainbow cone! Then let on 87th past Beverly CC on the right and what used to be Evergreen CC on the left, where I broke 100 for the first time on a Sunday afternoon after work. I miss Evergreen CC, it was a great layout. That's where I learned to play golf.

It would be cool If you take the beginning to the end streets like route 14 like what I did 8 years ago or lakeshore drive all the way down till it stops
