You can do that as well, but will have to apply the motion tile effect inside a comp to achieve the same effect, as mask will not work on a motion tile layer. Happy New Year!

Buddy, it seems that you are using mask on the shatter layer itself, please watch the tutorial again you will have to use the mask on the other layer not on the layer containing the object and shatter effect. Hope it will help you. Please let me know if you still need my help. thanks
