I'm not sure how you can make real world problems when it comes to things like the quadratic formula that are precursors for calculus. I also still don't understand how math discriminates, I thought the nature of numbers is universal. This sounds like wrapping social justice into math curriculum instead of teaching social justice using math.

I have done something similar because in my after school I have students of all ages so I let them pick the solution for their grade level. That way they all can participate in using the same number and they love it! I love your choices and the organization. I love have the number of the week versus number of the day.

Thank you for this! I love changing up Number of the Day with choice and flexibility. I just started a new role last year as math intervention for 1st and 2nd graders. I am learning a lot from Christina Tondevold, who shared your video, Greg Tang, who does a great job with both teachers & students, and Graham Fletcher. Now adding your support, too! I have taught 20 years and had got stuck with those same old routines. I love to continue my own learning to support my students. I don’t see the link for resources. Thanks again for sharing!

I'd heard about some of these before -- and it was a great reminder that students are way more capable of understanding big math concepts than we give them credit for. My 2nd graders know that when we subtract 2 numbers, we take away the smaller number from the larger number, because that's what we're learning RIGHT NOW. But we talk about how in the future, they will get to do math and use negative numbers. I just like being transparent with them about how what we're doing now will relate to what they do in the future!

Thank you so much, this video was very informative. I always try to approach math in a positive manner. I am homeschooling my daughter and when she reacts panicky to a new math lesson I tell her we will study the monster together and find out if it's really as scary or actually friendly., (we even draw a mad monster on the board) then we get right into the lesson slowly with friendly smiles and breaks for expression. We change the face of the monster to a friendly one by the end when she feels she "gets it" I will take all the information you provided to heart.

I struggled HARD with rounding last year and was set on teaching it differently this year. Thanks for this video! It was so helpful and I’m definitely going to use those ideas and activities you shared.

I love this idea. I had Chris Shore's website bookmarked to look at later and haven't had much time to do that. I love the diversity of examples you offer in this video. I think using this manipulative number line will really help kids with number sense.

I know this wasn't the main point but I never thought about comparison in relation to the number line!

Great ways to update this idea! I think the concept of the Number of the Day is sound-- students need to be more flexible with numbers and to think about them in different ways. But when it gets to be a formula-matic exercise-- where kids can predict what they are going to be asked to do-- it looses the flexible thinking. I also like to use learning partners and changing triads to give my students the social learning aspect. These ideas will help with that. Thank you!
