Worked in cyber for over 30 years in the government. Before it was the nice "buzz word" cyber. Biggest problem across the board is the basics. Most techs are lack luster at best in protecting IS. They pull COTS products out of the box and directly connect to their node without any offline configuration first. They forgo patching in lew of user functionality. They leave all ports open on boarder routers and only close them when they penetrated. They store backups in house and rarely implement the backups nightly. Let's not even go into cold, warm and hot sites. Those are almost nonexistent anymore in the hopes that they can still operate via personal home networks and cloud data. It's a total shit show. Glad i left. Got tired of putting out fires for big wigs who were more concerned with the bottomline than protecting their data. They always think it won't happen to them and when it does the cost is triple what the upgrades would've cost.
