Foxbody Shock Tower Reinforcement
Просмотров 724 часа назад
I decided to reinforce my shock towers, as I'm switching to a Cobra IRS with coil-overs. My concern was the shock towers tearing out, as I plan to use this car for auto-cross and track day duties...and the original shock towers were not made to handle those loads.

Messing around with the Roll Cage...Part 1
You look like your work is coming out pretty good.
Awesome work Jesse!! Love the design. Your welds look GREAT Brother!!💯🏁👊🏾
Thanks, bro!
Looking good! Thinking about the force diagram i was wondering how you would tie the vertical and horizontal axis, the slotted top piece was a great idea
Great video buddy! I like your seat bracket mock up 🤩
Thanks for checking it out, Gary!
Great job brother! I'm day dreaming about doing this on Project Stang while I got the motor out. Been wanting an excuse to learn to weld. What kind of welder do you have?
Thanks, man! I take a lot of pride in my work and doing as much myself as possible. I couple years ago and got a Millermatic 210.
I'd say any welder, though, is a game changer. Before I had my own welder, my son borrowed a Harbor Freight or Northern Tool welder and it got the job done.
Hey bud what transmission and crossmember did you go with
@cbcb2960 still the original T5. Crossmember is still the original crossmember...I think we just moved it back a couple inches from the original position.
@@puzzlefox5.076 thanks for the reply
About to do the same . Tired of dealing with computer's, relays, sensors, &solenoids!!!!!!! Give me a carburetor & distributor anyday !!!!!!
I may have missed it, but what company/brand are the new plastics from?
Auctmarts. Got a code from RK Motorsports that saved me a couple percent. I had a link to their website in my previous GSX-R video.
Hey would you be interested in selling the lower left piece?
Can send address to ship if you are able to .
Let me check and make sure I didn't throw it away and I'll get back to you.
@@puzzlefox5.076 lol thanks
Sorry man...I took a look at the lower left piece and it is broken...the piece along the very bottom that also goes behind the kickstand.
I just ordered some rails from scott rod fabs. My new egde is really bad at the shock towers.
What motor mounts did you use and is that a fox body oil pan
If I'm remembering right, the are 4.0 V6 mounts and a Rickz Rangers adapter plates. You can look on his website and I think it gives you details.
Oh...also forgot to mention...yes, it is still the Foxbody oil pan.
@@puzzlefox5.076 Thanks man, cool build you guys have, i think i mite build one...
What headers did you run
No I forgot the brand I think they are Scott Drake or something like that. But they are 65 through 70 Mustang Tri-Y long tubes. They were pretty reasonably priced.
@@puzzlefox5.076 thanks,I've got a 2000, ranger, 302, carbureted, donor motor and t5, are from an 84 ft. Ran shorty headers for a while, minimal mods, really just a steering rod mod. Would be nice to run a full length, just trying to research which brand or style would be the most installer friendly,if there is such a thing. Lol, have a great day. Any responses are welcome. Thanks
I just bought a 92 that was 302 swapped and it used to be 4wheel but was swapped with some big 5spd. How would I go about making an exhaust for as cheap as possible that doesnt sound like shit?
We just went to a local muffler shop and put together an exhaust that sounds decent.
What radiator did you go with buddy.. I'm in process of same swap
The SVE rad from LMR. Should be here by the end of the week.
@puzzlefox5.076 thanks for the reply... big help
Sorry. thought you were asking about my Mustang. It was a "standard Chevy" radiator. I think we got it from Jegs or Summit. I'd have to look back or talk to my son to see exactly what it was.
Hey, buddy...I was doing more thinking about the radiator...and I didn't want to steer you wrong. I'm pretty confident it is a radiator for an Explorer or Ranger with a 4.0 V6. My son remembers he got it from Advanced Auto.
Am going to be use these panels on my new edge here soon can’t wait excited for the clean look
I’m in the middle of my Scott rod panels. How did you get your inner sheet metal to look tight ? I took your idea and made the extra sheet metal pieces but if I try to weld mine on the side I have a huge gap. If I weld it on the outside I have no visual gap. Just the strut tower pieces
I'm sorry, I may not be understanding your question. I trimmed and fitted the Scott Rod panel first. Then I created the "filler panels"...trimmed, formed, fitted. I actually tacked in the "filler panels" first and then welded in the Scott Rod panels. I have it documented in a video about a year ago..."Installation of Foxbody Scott Rod Fab smooth inner fenders" video...if you want to check that out.
From Melbourne Australia what an ungrateful lowlife.......keep up your great work mate 💯🇦🇺💚✌️
At the end of your video you said that the argon was gettin low. Are you using 72/25 or straight argon. With mig welding you need 75/25. When the bottle get low you can experience dirty gas depending on how old the tank is. Have a great day!!!
It is 75/25.
FYI, more heat on the welding process. 1 amp per thousands of material. You may need a little more than that but get in and out of the welding process. The welds look too cold. Your project is looking great!!!
It’s the Holley Russian nesting doll kit! That’s gonna be fun to play with.
I remember that starring process over 40 years ago on my 750. Now I have the same pleasure with my outboard motor. 😂

Glad I could bring you some good info. Some of the first videos I watched of yours were some painting ones and the outdoor paint booth that you made. My plan is to paint my car myself, and you gave me some of the inspiration to do it myself.
I watched your RUclips channel Very nice videos on your channel, I have watched all your uploaded videos and noticed all the videos are nice. But there is a small problem. Your video uploads have to do some work like (SEO) and help in getting future video views. You are working so hard just to get views, now if the views don't come then your hard work is useless. All video SEO does, you will see that your video views will come. I can help if you want. Thank you, have a nice day
I remember one day in the late 80’s thinking about entering an auto cross with my 5.0 4 speed Pace Car. I went outside and did a look over of my car and discovered the typical floor crack under the drivers seat. I never did any auto cross. My friend Randy welded up the floor. I sold it March 1990.
Never too late 🙂
@@puzzlefox5.076 Foxbody’s are out of my price range now.
I get that and also wish I could have more. Keep your eyes open...there are still deals to be had out there!
@@puzzlefox5.076 Not many in Minnesota. It’s either a modded Foxbody driven occasionally or rusted in a back yard or behind a barn or owned by a guy nearly retired and it’s his car from his youth. I just don’t hardly ever see them in the summer either.
Good.
Haha same boat!!! Racecar that will be street driven!!
very helpful video
I’ve gotta get their K member
I'm really impressed with it...just with how it looks. It's a beefy looking unit. Can't wait to drive the car! But it's been so long, I hardly remember how it drove stock, ha ha.
Great video and love the comparison part most don’t do well with showing it
Also, if the kickstart doesn't spring back into place after you take your foot off of it, it's likely that the transmission layshaft bearing (inside the transmission case and deep in the back) is failing. The stock build was a light-weight ball bearing; there are some modern replacements ball bearings or roller bearings that are much more reliable. If you're having trouble with that bearing, the next step is the layshaft coming out of line with the mainshaft; that puts the layshaft through the transmission case and strips the teeth off of gears in the transmission. If in doubt, check it out -- it's very important for that bearing to be OK.
Thanks...the kickstart does spring back. I don't recall having an issue with that. Thanks for your input, I do find it valuable, since I am just learning about these bikes.
*Exactly* what is the carburetor setup on your Commando? There is something quite wrong but the fix is probably different it it has 2 Amals, 1 Amal, or 1 Japanese carburetor. A properly tuned Commando will start easily and idle smoothly (properly tuned - means it might take some work to get there). There may be some type of coding number (perhaps something like 932/118) stamped into the carburetor body, too; if you can find that, it will help you a lot (of course, if there are two carbs, both will be numbered).
Thanks, I will look into that the next time I am messing with it. It may be sitting until spring now, as I have tucked it away for the winter and switched to another project.
Vaccinated??
Great video! Thanks for sharing. I have a 1974 Norton commando 850 Roadster myself. It’s my winter project:) Quick thought on your process…. I believe using distilled water would have been better to rinse it out. That way it won’t rust again so quickly. Cheers!!! -Nick
Your a GOOSE,,, go back to your day job !
Question, I have a 2002 GT Roush. Need to repair this area. I checked Scott website. Not sure but will this kit fit new edge and fox or fox only?
Man, I'm not sure. I would like to think it would, with a little fabrication. I'd hate to steer you wrong. I'd say to look on LMR for smooth factory style inner fender. I whish I would've done that with my car, after the fact.
Appreciate your reply boss.
I agree with guillermo , running lean , check the plugs as soon as you can for colour. fit an airbox or rejet accordingly. Also very surprised that you didn't have the oil filler cap off when you started it up for the first time to check oil returning to the tank ! Oil filter is not standard but a wise non standard addition, Like most early 70s brit stuff theres a lot of cross compatibility ,try comparing it to a mini oil filter you may find its a lot cheaper ! Elec ignition is a good update ,my 71 combat runs well on it and circulated Cadwell Park track here in the UK at a nice 100 on the straight after 600 miles of running in at 4000 rpm after a full rebuild
I did pull the oil cap off at one point, son after I had it running, and verified oil was returning.
@@puzzlefox5.076 The base of the oil filter (the part that really matters) on the Norton is the same as that used on a '1970s Simca and it's also the same as a filter used on small Mazda engines from the 70s right up to today. If the threads are correct to seat the filter on the housing and the flat O-ring is a compatible match with the sealing surface on the housing, pretty much any filter will work OK. That's why you'll sometimes see a slightly different diameter of the body or a slightly different body length. If the fitting area on the filter is right, they all work OK.
Hello ! Les fltres à huile pour 2cv Citroen conviennent parfaitement également ! Bon courage pour la suite😉@@brucebear1
Can't see you tickling the carb on the Mk 1 Amal ? Pretty essential and more crucial than the choke on a cold start
Definitely have been tickling the carb. That's just fun to say, ha ha.
Nice work. What welder did you use? I'm about to tackle mine.
This is going to be an awesome car. Good stuff!
Thanks for the vote of confidence!
Can't wait to see it man!
I'm sure you've solved all your problems by now but know this: the enemy of Amal carbs is ethanol gas. If left in the carb for any length of time the gas evaporates internally and plugs the idle circuit passage which is .015" or simply 15 thousands of an inch. The idling circuitry isn't needed once you give the throttle some gas and the throttle needle and jet over ride the idle circuit. Ethanol was not in gas when these carbs were designed and installed in British bikes. The new design of Amal Premiers have a better circuitry thats easier to clean out if plugged. Try Shell Super which should be ethanol free or any other ethanol free gas. Especially since I only see 1 carb that Norton Commando will never be what it wants to be. The dual Amals gives the Commando the acceleration, the torque and the grunt it was designed to be. You'll notice a huge difference. Be careful of all the owners advocating to go to a single Mikuni carb. If you do you'll miss out on that torque, acceleration and grunt. Once you learn how to set up the carbs, time the bike it will be a 1 kick starter and a perfect idler just like mine and many others. Good luck.
Robert, thanks for the input! I'm still learning about these old British bikes.
And the Premium gas here in Minnesota is (supposed to be) ethanol-free.
Looking Awesome got you with a follow 🚗🦊💪💯🇺🇸👊 im going all maximummotor sports to but i want to keep it as close to stock as possible as far at the off set control arms
Thanks! And good luck and enjoy the process of your project.
Disregard…. Yes I see you are going to square later
Did you square the K-member?
I see you did another reply 😀. But i will do it....and the K-member will come off again. I will have to figure a way to 'mark' things so I don't have to re-square it.
spot weld cutters, yea I struggled with them, but you were on teh money when you said go slow. last time I used them, it worked fantastic on the 20+ welds I had to cut. Try again, and go slower....or just move to a mini belt sander ! those are more fun....but nothing beats a plasma cutter !
Congrats on the landing! Looks very similar to my '90 with all MM suspension instead of IRS. I've been in hover mode for a bit over 3 years now and hope to be back on the ground by '24.

You got lean fuel issues. Either the carb float bowl needs height ajusting so that more fuel enters the carb and or change needle valve position. The Norton came originally with two carbs. You have an aftermarket setup. Amal carbs are notorious for off idle hestitation meaning when You give It a bit of throttle It wants to stall. also install a Air filter. It helps richen the Air fuel mixture a bit to normal. Check valve clearances as well.
Thanks for the information! I really appreciate it and will look into it!
Looks great man! That's exactly what we did for my subframe bracket.
