I actually really appreciate this comment. I totally agree with you. I kind of worked against myself in this video because yeah I didn't really "groove" at all. My biggest lacking when it comes to drums is definitely just getting the feel right. That's why funk is so hard for me to play convincingly. I've been practicing some Tower of Power songs that are just awesome though like What is Hip? and Oakland stroke.

​@waltysalamander I'm a big TOP fan, but Garibaldi is probably the most tense and regimented funk drummer out there. A good crossover from metal, but maybe try some James Brown stuff, look up Bernard Purdie etc. Tbh, seems to me like you're a big metal fan, if you want to play more nuanced stuff you've got to listen to it more, and I mean really listen. I've never been a jazz drummer, main reason being I haven't loved listening to jazz enough to want to learn it.

Also, to add.. I can't play what you did, cos I don't like metal enough to want to practice it. I'm just lazy! Abe from Deftones has serious groove though.. give them a go?

@@youwillrefertomebythenameb783 Very true. I never really thought about it that way, but you’re totally spot on with your description of Dave Garibaldi. That is actually a likely reason that I gravitate towards his playing.

@@waltysalamander Iowa and Self Titled are the best for sure. But their other work is worth the listen. Vol 3 is a good place to start and I really like the Gray Chapter as well. WANYK is a bit experimental but the heavier tracks are very strong. The new album is alright, and AHIG has its moments. Definitely try 3 and .5 though at least

Yes. The only issue is that it’s not possible to take scuba gear down there. You have to essentially descend a dirt trail down a 250 foot cliff. And even from there it’s about a kilometer of straight walking on unbalanced rocks to get to the point. I really want to take a boat out there, which would enable me to actually scuba dive it. Thanks for continuing to watch my videos though! I recognize you from a lot of my older vids from like 2-3 years ago!

Not a drummer but someone who follows a lot of them. Have you tried practicing the heel swivel technique yet? That's what I see a lot of drummers use in faster metal to be able to play songs with a lot of double bass. There are videos of George Kollias explaining it, but it's been too long ago to say whether he gives a proper explanation on how to start out with it. There sure are tips out there to improve your current technique, maybe using different pedals or another setting? Also heard plenty of people about that. I hope this whole comment isn't entirely useless for you 😇🙂 If you keep trying to improve and you get stuck, sometimes switching it up can get you further. We all have different genetics and especially good calves aren't that common (Matt Garstka does also work out and does have good calf genetics, but comparing yourself to him isn't a good idea anyway to inspire confidence in most drummers haha)

@@Tminus89 Thanks! I haven’t given the swivel-foot technique much thought. I’ve pretty much been trying to brute force it because strength and power usually comes easier for me than good technique. I’ll try it out!
