Off Grid Colorado
США
Добавлен 2 июн 2006
This channel is to document the rehabilitation of an off grid cabin and land in Colorado we bought in 2020 to be a homestead. This 30 acre property is miles away from utilities. The only power is provided by solar panels and occasionally generators when solar is not sufficient. We use a community spring for water. When we purchased it in 2020, there were many buildings and mobile homes on the property all filled with years of personal belongings of previous owners and long with lots of trash. The buildings are very distressed. Our goal is to salvage what we can, donate what we are not able to use and return the land to the most pure state we can. We are NOT yet living here full time. Right now I am a weekend warrior stuck between two lifestyles. The one that pays the bills and the other where dreams happen. I started this channel because my family and friends wanted to follow the process. I did not start this channel to make money & will never do paid promotions or advertisements.

I believe I have a home site located on the property. The previous owners put in a septic and well in the early 1980s. I also built a small insulated box to protect a lithium battery from cold temps this winter. I ...

When the snow gets deep you need to watch for people trying to steal from you. Maybe some trail cameras would be a good investment. GPS trackers are another thought. Greetings from Florida.
Thanks for the tip! I do have Starlink and Realtime camera feeds and notifications and thankfully, it's very remote with not too many people but that is always on my mind.
@@offgridco I grew up in Alamosa and lived many years in Colorado Springs.. I had a cabin in a remote location and there was a jail break and the sheriff had followed these convicts in the snow to my cabin area. He called me asking how to get inside because I had steel plates with welded bolts through the door frame and windows. I told them to see if they could find a way in, they couldn’t. The convicts weren’t there. The next summer I took the sheriff up and showed him the hidden access point. He was surprised. With 10’ f snow people on snowmobiles frequently cut through my property heading into the National Forest.
That sounds pretty intense. I've been fortunate so far. Nothing is really safe anymore.
Next to the building proly
I was born and raised in Colorado. No offense. I believe Colorado sucks. Colorado started sucking when it got Californicated back in the late 80s, I remember when it did and it started sucking them😢
It's not my favorite. The only reason I am here is because my day job relocated me here in 2015. Once I am done my career, we will see if I stay but I did not want to stop my dream just because I am currently stuck here. It's grown on me but yea, not the people. The nice thing is, where my property is... no people except some great neighbors who also don't want to be around a lot of people. :). I am making the best of it. Thanks for taking the time to comment.
In 2018, the Spring Creek fire in the Southern Colorado Mountains burned 108,000 acres and destroyed 140 structures. My cabin was in the middle of the fire. I had cleared all brush and most trees within 100 yards of my buildings. In 1984, I had a cement foundation and the cement wall was 5’ above ground. It also had a metal roof. The bottom half of the structure was also metal and only 4’ was T111 siding. I had it built up due to the snow and didn’t want to take a chance on a fire destroying it. I had a well and solar powered system. The fire came within 100 feet. The gravel kept the fire away. Almost all the cabins in the area burned and it has taken years to get some of them rebuilt. My 250 gallon propane tank survived untouched. Last year, I sold the property because at 75 years old I am not able to enjoy it anymore. I wish you the best in building your dream place. 🙏🏼🫡
Wow, that's amazing. Thanks for the inspiration. For me it seems like a race against time. My property has not been maintained for a very long time if ever so it's a lot to get through. I'm also going to be planting new trees too. I have quite a but of old growth trees and would like to diversify the species. Unfortunately, I just found I have quite a bit dwarf mistletoe on my ponderosa pine so I have been culling the infected trees or at lest thinning and increasing the communication distance. It's my primary focus right now. :)
@@offgridco a bit of advice about how you plant trees. I would take a gallon plastic jug and drill holes in the sides & bottom. Then fill with small rocks. I would insert a plastic hose 18” long in the jug opening. Then place the jug next to the roots of the tree you are planting. Then I would just fill the jug with water. This way you don’t waste water watering the ground around the tree. After a couple of years you pull the hose. Just something to think about. Good luck. 🙏🏼🫡
@@billm5433 Thanks, I will try that idea. I intend to buy bare root saplings from the Colorado forestry service.
Thanks for the update! Appreciate your efforts!
Thank you. I appreciate the feedback. :)
Did you get any snow in the last couple of days?
Yes, we got some last night in the overnight hours but only about an inch. By morning it was already mostly melted. The ground is still a bit warm. Next week it will be sunny and warmer again.
Where have you been man? Miss seeing your videos
I have some content loaded. I just need to edit. I am busy taking standing dead trees down and splitting wood right now. I had business travel in September in California so I missed a few weeks. I am back at it but mostly right now it's trees and more trees. Some stuff is not super exciting. I am recording. I also am waiting on a quote to start the footers and foundation. At their mercy right now so building will not be until they have an opening. I also just installed a direct vent Martin propane heater in the cabin. I know I have to do some editing. I will try to work on it Saturday. It's coming. :)
I like how you think, good for you and your future.
Thank you! I appreciate the feedback. Doing the best I can for my future self one day at a time.
Lots of abandoned nice places in Alaska. The main reason they are abandoned??, ,Lack of fresh water. If your going off the grid building your own way, make sure you have fresh water close by or is easily attainable. Solar Stills, Rain catch barrels. Some way of boil producing clean potable water , so you don't get Beaver Fever.
I wish I knew how to get away with that in Colorado. You have to have a 650 gallon septic system just to be able to occupy your dwelling legally. I miss my family in Colorado but I ain't going to put in a 650 gallon septic system just for me to sleep on my own property. Greed, property values, taxes, and the banks seem to be more important than somebody being able to be happy.
Yes, thankfully when I bought my land in 2020 it already had a septic and well installed. They installed it in the later 1970's but never built. The septic passed inspection and I replaced the well pump. I'm not sure I would be able to install a new septic in today's dollars. Wow expensive.
Have you ever heard of the rolls of chancery? Its like when your removed from the tax rolls
Also if you put stuff on wheels you can get around the building permit etc. They also have granny flats and bubble houses (on platforms) and them new china model trailer things
No, I never head of this. I will look it up. Thanks.
The only issue is without a legal dwelling, you can't register your car in the county where my land is and they have land use restrictions but not many things are enforced to be honest. All great ideas. Thanks.
You could have reclassified it as a barn or agricultural building by requesting a reevaluation by the county assessor. I know it's too late for you but others might benefit. I did this on my property in Alamosa county Colorado.
Interesting. My land is zoned agricultural and I probably have to become more versed. There are land use restrictions and how many out buildings (4) while not having a residence. I am somewhat trapped because of the existing buildings. It's not clear to me what I can and can't do. Thanks for the tip though. The building was in rough shape. We were able to salvage quite a bit of good lumber and hopefully the rebound will be better. I'm working now to find a contractor for footings and foundation for my small home. I'm hoping after I have a "legal dwelling" I will have some more liberty.
Thanks
You're welcome. :)
Man we have the same outlook on life and the same worries
I feel it in my bones brother.
We are the same age
@@jeromeburns6458 Nice! I like this age. I have so much more wisdom but it goes by so fast. I'm trying to get the most out of life as I can before it slips away. The clock is ticking.
I'm surprised with the pitch on the roof that building didn't collapse from the snow.
Turns out there were some very heavy beams holding up the roof. I'm guessing 4x6? Most of them survived the demo so we are keeping them for other projects :)
Debt-free is the way to go. Relieves everyday stress. Thanks for the video!
Thank you. My pleasure. It takes a lot longer but no chains.
Thanks for sharing❤ love the adventures of Colorado. I’m from Deep South Louisiana so all I have is swamp, small forests and wetlands to explore. I love visiting my brother out there 😊
My pleasure! Thanks for taking the time to comment and give feedback. I'm excited to have found such a huge playground right near my land. I've only scratched the surface and I can't wait to explore some more 😎
Are you just robbing someone’s bug out shelter?
I wish it were so. Unfortunately, I made my own bed and I'm sleeping in it. Bed bugs and all. They are draining my life blood but I still carry on with my dream and if it's a nightmare it's mine and mine alone. I'm fighting the good fight. This hampster wheel is making me dizzy but I still keep turning,
Miss Colorado. Changed alot since 1958,, to much.
Beautiful country! Wouldn't hike wo bear spray in my hand. Lots of native american camps !!! Ty
Thank you. I have two cans at my cabin but totally forgot. Sigh. I was quickly reminded after seeing the scat. 😕. Thankfully no issues in this hike. We will be better prepared next time. 😁
It's a prison. And it's prisoners love their captors.
We are being farmed ...
The answer is NO!
All planned to keep the poor poor. Even if you have land these days doesn't mean you can live off it even camping on it as last resort. But nope they say show us the 💸 💰 🤑! So isn't trickle down economics great folks. In El Paso county you can't live in a camper if your house burns down. You need a one year only permit that requires you have blueprints & are building a new home.
It's sad we did this to ourselves.
Dont buy land in Colorado
My work relocated me here in 2015. I wanted to continue with my dream no matter what state my work had me. That being said, I may leave when my career is over. I do like some things here but the politics is not one of them.
If you drive your car and do not put your hands at 10 and 2. You have. Just broken the law.You are a criminal.
It's true, and then add in selective prosecution... just one wrong step and it could be a landmine.
Permission slip... I don't need no stinking permission slip.
Claim ur an illeagel alien and u can a license for free
I'm sure I could pitch a tent in downtown Denver without any problems. It seems just law abiding citizens have the most trouble or get affected most by these laws and regulations. It's just about control and farming us.
So hard to take out trees. Good job. 👍 I think I would find a no wind day and give the ants a gasoline/diesel shower, with a firey chaser.
Thanks! LOL. Yea, the ants freak me out but thankfully are a good distance from any structures so they will live for now. :)
Democracy at its best the government is the real enemy of the people not Russia or China
Government is not very helpful. We are just being farmed for resources. That liberty tree may need some refreshing perhaps...
Nope we're not free. If the government's not getting something out of you they don't want you to be enjoying it. And it's going to get worse we're going to be like sardines as time goes on. You might want to get a permit to build Towards the Sky
We humans are being farmed....
It's the same thing here in Nova Scotia Canada. I live off grid on ferrel land that belongs to a friend of mine and in order to register my truck and my car I have to say that my address is my brother's house !!!
I'm sorry to hear that. This world is upside down. Thanks for commenting. Take care.
I thought thos was Canada 😢
No, totally the USSA. Not free here either.
Sometimes you don't tell certain people what you're doing. Paying an addict contributes to their problem and their addiction becomes your problem.
It's true. My goal now is to produce the smallest amount of money for the addict.
I would love to know the total price for this rack as Signature Solar has a 6 large panel adjustable rack for $279
It was cheaper than that for sure. 3- 2x6x8, 5- 2x4 and I used 2 4x4 posts but on my second build, I made it so it was 4 foot high so I could use one 4x4 post cut in half. I just looked up at lowes.com and with current lumber prices it's about $76.20 for the lumber not including screws to fasten it together.
Don't live in a state that supports tyranny.
Unfortunately, the company I work for moved me here in 2015. I'm a hostage for now... I still wanted to continue with my dreams even if the politics are bad. I may reset somewhere else after I retire. It's hard to say.
Put up.a fence around your land and some ,,no trespassing signs,,
I do have signs. Fence will be a longer term goal. The cost of everything is great and I'm doing all of this without debt so it's taking me a while.
@offgridco yes,fence is expensive,.....aggree 😬
But squatters are allowed to live in your house,...you need to move to texas,...we are still free
Register your vehicle in South Dakota
Is that a thing? 🤔. I often wonder what RV folks do.
What you get is shafted by a money grabbing corporation.
Without lubrication... 😐
Profits over freedom in a land ruled by elites, if you were a criminal you’d be in the same league as the ones who make up the rules
We are being farmed.
Your gonna do fine with that; Can do adittude. Winters in the Cascade range are just as un predictable. 2 winters ago, I exsperienced 13 to 14 ft accumulated snow through out the season. That kept me busy and snowed in for 6months. There is always small game like rabbits that once in a while appear. Concentrate on your dried or canned beef stores and beans, smoked hamm hocks and belly's. Dried split peas & blackeyed peas,. Salt pepper Flour and sugar. Me, I store up on these and coffee along with dried onions potatoe flakes, rice and noodles. I use 5-gal buckets&lids too store thee excess till I need to restock thru winter. My creek freezes over, but honestly theres no better tasting water than fresh fallen snow. Not bottled, filtered or anything. Makes the most tender pot of beans and best tasteing coffee ! Not much else I can tell ta except, firewood. Have plenty ready, 6 to 7 cords covered and dry. I should really take that last one more seriously myself,, been going on 6 winters dropping and cutting almost daily every cold ass winter. Your distant ancestors,, with all there lack, made it or you wouldn't exist today,,, you will TOO!
Wow. I can't imagine that much snow. Thanks for all of the tips. I need all the help I can get 😁
Sounds like things are looking up for ya,,, 👍👍👍! Today is July 4th 2024! Exercise your PAID in Blood for independant nature.
10/4 on the tinder box fire hazards. Was in the bootleg 418'000 acre wild fire in southern Oregon in 2022. 18 acres and everything I owned burnt. Over 4000 various pines and aspens,, all gone. I'm 68,, and I gotta tell ya, broke me down to the lowest level of my life short of my brothers death in the 60's. But, life is limited, we all know that. I'm rebuilding, but where else would I live or be able too at my age, nursing home's are not my gig.
Sorry to hear that. All I'm focused on right now is fire mitigation. I guess we only control so much but I'm doing what I can. Thanks for commenting. Take care.
Haven't read all the comments. But from what I have read, watched combined with my life exsperience and that of my deceased Great Grand father, grand dad, parents and siblings all dead,, ; I see you all are not seeing so clearly the; How's, the Why's and thee only remedy. I have always been analytical my entire adult life. I watch, listen and couriously question all of it. These things have deep roots that have been forming and growing for Generations. I can refer you too History on this day we celebrate our PAID BY SCARIFICED BLOOD & TREASURE,, un excercised and taken for granted by most as a reason too party, "IDEPENDANCE". That word, has responsible requirement of "EXCERCISING". We The People, are not doing the slightest effort in enforcement when we are; self servingly putting our own personal desires ahead of, insuring the right of the WHOLE 1st. The Romans conquered and aquired by 1st, DIVIDING with strife and confusion. This tactic here, today U.S.A., 2024 is being employed by our elected and appointed from top to bottom Gov. enitie's. It's not; just in Colorado. Nor is it from California transplants born or Raised in New York or Texas. Alot of those are just like you and me, attempting too escape these shackels of bondage. Running from attack never removes the preditor. It may buy you time too stratigicly plan a response, but your gonna have too fight or run your entire life to stay alive. My Great Grand Father; E.H. Horton built his own life, so "I", his Great Grandson, could do the same. It's been a long and tough 68 year journey. He started his own buisness in Greely, Colorado; "Horton Plumbing Co." With a mule and wagon. He plumbed the 1st City Office, a town at the time, that later when it became a city, would now require him to become a lic Plumber,, or be put out of buisness. He also was a golden gloves boxer,, and according to family,, put the so called authority out. Out on the street! They later, by mail of course, sent him an honorary lic which he pitched into the waste can at his desk😊. He would later in his life, move to the remote THEN, National Forest later to be encompused as part of Estes Park, build by his own sweat and witt 2 log cabins on the Thomson River. One for Him, and thee other for family. Don't think chainsaws had been invented at that time. My mother, father, me and siblings lived in Greeley and before Great Grand dad's death, spent two, maybe 3 summers up there in the late 50's in that extra cabin! I am 68 now, and so glad I am closer to my departing than my starting. All these DRACONIAN measures messing everything up for those desires of the few. There reasons if asked; would be lies plucked from as many as there are stars. It stem's from there envy, hatred or jealousy of your found happiness in your live's. They are not happy, never can be. It's an agenda of vendictive attack for your enslavement most likely from bad, youth full behaviors not ignored, but anserwed with a pounding. Or an unintended slight at the H.S. dance not being asked to dance or dated. There anger/hatred, is deep rooted. So, you ask;" how did they rise too power?" By honning in on what your desire's were. It could be becoming a popular candidate for Governess or Govenor by sumitting a discussion of; how too free up revenue by de crimminalization of pot smoker's. "Alot of you", individually like pot, I get it. But that in its self is not a reason too vote him or her into office,, these people have THERE OWN PERSONAL AGENDA'S, some harmless, but some vendictive and evil. It's thee evil that will never be satisfied with its chaos. It will conquer and destroy ALL PURSUIT of liberty, freedom, justice and HAPPINESS. You already "KNOW" how too stop it,, it will require what it always requires; sacrificing safety and fear for COURAGE and Blood shed. How too prevent it from reacurring,, make sure never to call it outdated or allow others to brain wash your children into dismissing it from there education. Instead of looking at it as a holiday/party excuse, Toast its rememberance of DAILY EXCERCISE celebrated.
