    I’m an absolute beginner and I’ve been doing this for the last few months. I plan to go very slow, to try to avoid catching bad habits. Some days, I don’t play at all and just work on my right hand finger flexibility and strength. I’ve found that then going to Suzuki, I can get through it without roadblocks. Thank you for this comprehensive video, and for all the knowledge, examples and tips!

      Thats awesome @shonen84. The bow is the voice of the instrument, and creating a beautiful sound is definitely a core focus for my students in their first years. Nearly everything should be played with a beautiful sound, even when figuring out notes for a new piece.

    I’ve always played it by stretching to the next position instead of shifting. I feel like shifting is more prone to errors and getting to the right spot by how it feels is better

      Are you talking about the first few measures, for example? Would you stretch and then move your thumb/hand to follow afterwards? Or would you keep your arm pretty much fixed for a measure at a time?

    Wonderful step-by-step guide to this very tricky caprice! Thank you! Listening to this piece for the first time for me was almost like watching a magic trick, especially when you hear someone like Perlman or Hadelich play each single note so cleanly and crisply. It's this feeling of "WTH? How do they DO that?". Watching this video was like having someone finally explain to you how the magic trick is done. It's an epiphany. I am practicing it now, and starting to actually make it work! (I still need more practice though- even when you know how it's done, it's still difficult to execute it properly and needs a lot of practice)

    I have found this whole series very useful. I appreciate the way you explain the purpose of each etude, or at least why you use it to practice certain techniques. Most other videos dealing with etudes simply play them without explanation. The fact that you deviate from the "classic" interpretations is also very interesting and useful to my understanding. I would love to see some videos on how you approach Flesch scales and what Schradieck exercises you like and how you approach them too. Thanks!

I'm planning to start practicing this etude this month and today is my first day. but since you mentioned The Yost System I'm rethinking of trying it before this Etude as I never tried it before and it could be essential. please share your idea whether to start with this etude or The Yost System first.

      @BenjaminBregman 10 месяцев назад

      Depends on your experience and ability level with shifting. But in general I would definitely recommend feeling very comfortable with Yost before going into the etude. And even do the Yost exercises a bit each day while you are studying it. That will help you isolate the mechanics, and then you can apply them here.
