Sci-Fi Model Podcast Episode 8 - Tracing the History of Model Kits with Scale Icons
Man those details look soft! Like melted butter. This is a new tool kit? If it is it's unacceptable. When you get 2x the detail in a Bandai or Fine Molds at smaller scales you know AMT/Round2 is lazy. Why let them get away with it?
VERY COOL!! I love watching a good model builder work!
Interesting for fellow creators to see this behind-the-curtain stuff 👍
ooookay...why not store the parts in the lid if you want to see the sides of the bottom part? Dane ( or just use another container)
I looked hard at the kit last time I was at the museum where I buy a lot of my stash. Couldn't bring myself to spend the $130 Cdn on it. My daughter went and bought me the smaller AMT offering for my birthday, which was OK til I found out it cost $55 !!! NO F'N WAY is a 6" AMT Tie Fighter worth that. I figured $30 max. Meanwhile, I'm building the ancient cutaway Aluminum Falcon x2, one is more warped than the other so no interior layout for that one. Not even dealing with the sidewalls...
@JasonsModelShop Hi, Jason. This is an awesome build. I am building a 1:350 TOS Enterprise and using this as inspiration. Could you share info on the paints used on the saucer neck and detailing on the warp nacelles, please?

It's been a number of years...but here's what I recall. The base coat was Tamiya AS-20, Isignia White, spray paint The neck was just paint I mixed till I got the colour tone I wanted. The grays on the Nacelles were likely a Dark Ghost Gray, or. medium Gray. Likely Medium, but I can't recall for sure.
Much appreciated, Jason. I am going with AS-20 for the hull and solely with Tamiya XF paints for the additional detailing. Several are close and should work with some mixing. I have found your content extremely helpful and inspiring. You have a gift. Wishing you all the best.
Brilliant video. My attention span isn’t the best but I sat through the full video and really enjoyed it
My man, that's a bigger compliment than you realize!
@ subbed, and now working my way through your other videos
I so need this model kit.
It's a pretty solid kit!
An artists concept of an ancient, advanced tactical fighter, the starwars universe, was very old and had very advanced technology, shields and anti grav , sophisticated robots , warp space capability, i think the t.i.e. fighter is a Brilliant design, thank you for building the model
Thank you for watching!
👍🙂
🙏
If there was an Interceptor of the same quality, I'd almost be tempted.
Who knows what they'll do in the future...
Hey Jason. I just ordered this kit and your video will be a great help come build time. Thanks mate.
Hopefully I'll have the long form video posted by the time you start building yours.
@ I’m ready for it! Btw, is there a light kit for the shuttle? I have looked online and found one, but it looks a bit home made. Be great if Polar Lights do one.
Needs a dark panel line wash and dry brush.on the solar panels
there are 2 "photo etched parts" kits 1 from disney and an aftermarket maker for metal cockpit parts to use led internal cockpit details $45.00
The Disney one os actually produced by aftermarket maker Paragrafix
This kit is basically a 2 in 1. There's the outer shape, fairly similar to the studio model, but in smaller scale. Then there's a miniature version of the full scale set of the cockpit, complete with misaligned rear window. I personally would have preferred having the correct window from the model. I like being able to see straight through the windscreen and rear hatch, or the other way around. But I'm probably the minority on that.
I mean, it feels like a missed opportunity on AMT's part.
@@JasonsModelShop I really would love to see the original rear hatch where the pilot walks in from the rear instead climbing throough the roof. That is cool as hell. But Probably never. I think only the old AMT Interceptor used that design. An actual 1:24 studio replica would be awesome too, but they would need clearance to use the Airfix Harrier pilot and maybe from wherever the decals come. That's a costly legal mess, unfortunately.
Great review! I am looking for the older kits. Keep up the great work! R.I.P Star Wars 1977-2015, you had a great run! Sadly this Kit has Disney on the Box so I had to take it out of my shopping cart.
nice video- I haven't built models since I was a kid- this reminds me of how much fun it was..
Glad you enjoyed it!
Looks like your pre-shading was completely covered by your topcoat.
Almost, as was the plan. It's only somewhat visible the closer you get.
I’m so happy that Lake Monster is keeping Don’s Light and Magic line going.
100% with you.
I mark parts before removing them from the runners. I use part numbers and may also add arrows to show orientation, or ‘R’ ‘L’ ‘up’ dwn’ etc etc. Helps a lot when parts are similar, or optional.
Because I've focused on Trek for so long, it generally hasn't been an issue...until it was lol
Great looking TIE! AMT/ERTL kits was always pain in the a** to build.
definitely the old stuff/the unmodified recent reissues. But the brand new stuff, like developed in the last coupe years, it pretty tight.
This is cool.
Thank you!
Built this 2 years ago. Was missing a wing sprew...But had a duplicate, so I had holes where the wings connect together. Luckily those holes were covered by spoke supports. Other than that GREAT kit.
Having duplicates, or similar parts you can sub, is always nice. This one actually had a bunch of damage to the other edge pieces of the panels. luckily I was able to repair or hide it all.
AMT. Uilds garbage models. Flash, misalignmenting parts and just a general piss poor quality. They take an iconic space craft put it in 1/32 scale then butcher the whole kit by making it a Snap-Tite. Pathetic. He did a wonderful job though. 👍👍
As I said to someone with a similar comment, you're definitely correct. In general AMT is meh, at best. Especially old kits, or unmodifed reissues. The new stuff, like actually new and developed in the last couple of years is pretty decent. Like I had certain expectations, given the branding, going in. So I was pleasantly surprised with the overall quality.
I'm going to nitpick here, nothing to do woth the build, that's great. But the TIE Fighter is a terrible design. There is no side or rear vision for the pilot. Before people say, "But VR vision" let's remember that wasn't even a concept in 1977.
I feel like that's endemic of a number of early star wars designs. With the offset cockpit, the falcon is another example. Definitely form over function. They are visually interesting, though!
Let’s also remember that Star Wars doesn’t take place in 1977. It happens a long time ago, in a galaxy far far away, where they have all that stuff and more
Everyone forgets that these are science FICTION movies/stories. Watch NASA footage if you want science FACT.
I'll nitpick ya back. I'm sure a civilization that can have FTL, real-time holographic conversations light-years away, space lasers that destroy planets, will most certainly have VR. I do understand what you're saying from a writing and production standpoint. But hey, that's just me.
Tie fighters are ancient not from 1977.
The pilot looks undersized in the cockpit Like it's too spacious in there and the walls of the cockpit should be closer to them. Never thought of it before because in Star Wars the shots of the TIEs are either interiors or too far away to see cockpit interior through the viewport....
After watching a new hope to get a feel for build, I would tend to agree with you.
If you watch some of the latest movies and series, the Tie is larger than what it seemed like in the early movies.
Nice work dude ☺☺
Thanks 😁
Great build and template when I attempt to do my own soon. Any insight on the photoetch set? I literally just ordered this kit and saw the photoetch set available for this model. No one has a video on it yet.
Given what's in the PE set, and how detailed the model already is, I wouldn't bother with the extra expanse. Now, if it came with the floor piece it would absolutely be worth it. Save you all that masking, to illuminate the floor. And , if you really want those inner displays lit, it's pretty much your best bet.
@@JasonsModelShop ahh, thanks for the insight.
This was a great buildup, Jason! I just picked this kit up and have it on deck for my next build. This video will help immensely! Thanks for putting it up!
Thanks for watching, Matthew!
I picked up a bottle of UV resin and one of those UV flashlights about a month ago to serve another purpose but I'll have to keep this in mind as another practical use of the stuff.
it's pretty versatile stuff!
Fantastic job 😮
Thank you! Cheers!
I heard "pain in the aztec" 😄
well said!
Looks amazing!!!
Thanks, my man!
What would be the easier way to do the windows nice and neat for this scale do you think?
The only real option is to drill them out and fill them, I think.
Really great video Jason! This format really works, hope you keep it up.
It's something to build on!
Great build! Love the new video format too! Looking forward to more!
Very nice work Jason, beautiful build!
Thanks for watching!
Built this one many years ago when it first came out. I didn't light it but did the panel shading using pastel chalk.
Nice!
Great job! I heard the decals along the wing are troubling and have been recommended to cut and then apply, but looks like you had no problem!
There's a bit of a dip at the joint between pylon and nacelle. but it's managable
Nice work
@Jason's Model Shop I don't know if you are following my K'Tinga build on HLI's forum. I'm in the middle of the painting stage and am currently doing four different shades of green on my paint scheme along with other colors and that is coming out pretty decent. I'm on the bottom of the hull as I finished the top of the hull and every hull panel on that ship is hand painted.
I'll check that out!
A swear. The front of that nacelle. So damn perfect.
Green Strawberry nailed those resin parts!
The 1/48 Aoshima Airwolf is a pretty decent kit, I'm just about to close up the fuselage on mine. Did loads of work on Dom's station at the rear and you can see absolutely none of it once installed 😂
Maybe, but you'll know it's there!
Looking forward to it!
I'm still sorting out tech, and timing lol
The Falcon cutaway is a fun kit! It's terrible, but it's fun. It's fun to sit down and detail, as you don't have any reference and you can't really mask much for airbrushing. I'll be watching!
The truth is, I don't get a lot of opportunity to hand paint anymore. Mostly masking and air brushing, so maybe it'll be a nice change.
