As a Canadian, instrument rated private pilot I fly our Cessna 177RG Cardinal to all kinds of fun places. Two of my many passions in life are flying and videography. This channel is where I can combine both passions and I share the sights, sounds and adventures of my personal flying. I encourage anyone watching (and hopefully enjoying) these videos to find your local flying school and book yourself a discovery flight. Go and try it for your self, you might enjoy it more than you expect!
Flying to the Rockies - Part #1 of 6 - Steinbach to Pincher Creek
Join us in this long, epic cross country adventure from our home base in Steinbach, Manitoba, Canada all the way to the west coast of Canada. In this multi part trip we fly over the rockies, past Vancouver's busy airspace all the way up north to Prince Rupert BC. We saw amazing scenery and lived some fantastic memories of formation flying and great memories. This is Part #1 of 6 where we depart our home base in the middle of the Canadian prairies and fly IFR to the edge of the Canadian Rockies.

Cessna Cardinal 177RG Sunset flight over northern Manitoba

A good friend of mine was 250 kilometres up north in isolated northern Manitoba for a moose hunting trip. He jokingly said you should fly over and say hi sometime, so we did. My cousin, wife and I pointed the Cardinal north towards his GPS coordinates. We were texting each other via the Garmin InReach and had a fun time finding his camp. Just a great excuse for a 2 hour sunset flight over the i...

Cessna Cardinal RG close formation with Citabria over Manitoba Canada
Hahaha you are absolutely right... trips where things go as expected are boring!
How do you like having that Garmin AoA indicator? Is it helpful? I am about to install one in my 182. Nice flying and great videos. Thank you.
100% worth it. It's like having a bar graph of how hard the wing is working at all times. A great cue for me if i am dragging in my finals a bit (AOA will start to show more green, eventually some yellow). Also great when using auto pilot in cruise, AOA might light up a bit, i look down, sure enough AP was holding due to some down drafts. It's like a real time Bank account balance readout of how much lift the wing has left in it's piggy bank. Worth every cent. Just wish the Garmin PITOT was approved for airspeed so now i have two Pitot tubes.
@@gogilgau Thank you very much for the affirmation. I had read a lot but yours is about the best videos of that I have seen it in action during phases of flight. Much appreciated!
Bella Bella landing with 15kt crosswind was not obvious.. Great job Gil !
Thanks, worked it a bit. We never know exactly what to expect on landings but Bella Bella was a handy runway in the middle of nowhere.
Good Job editing Gil! Looks like you’ve put some money in that cardinal. Nice Panel and paint.
Thanks, I knew the plane was a Keeper so redid the entire panel, power flow, Scimitar prop, LOVE this plane, great on gas.
Awesome trip guys, was nice to be able to say hi!
Thanks so much for the flyby, made an amazing trip out west even more EPIC!
Great views from the sky!
Great trip, I'll be following pretty much the same route next summer with any luck, heading out to Vancouver Island.
You will enjoy that trip for certain, Part #2 has the vancouver airspace ATC chatter etc. We return in July this summer also, wedding on the island. Fly safe.
Love your flying videos! Very well done 👍🏼 The Cardinal is a great little plane. Please keep the vids coming
Say "Guy.....mon. Not Gay... mon.
Wonderful video and camera work for the scenery. I can’t believe you only stopped once from Burlington to Steinbach. Anyways, I had a connection watching this video. I grew up in Burlington and flew a few times at this airport. I am pretty sure it was a grass runway in those days. We are taking the VIA Canadian train to visit our daughter in Elma Manitoba for Christmas. Of course we always go to Santa Lucia Pizza in Steinbach. I am sure you have been there many times. In the summer months we love going to the Airliner Drive In which is in Beauséjour to have a burger and watch the planes take off and land. Great place! Thanks for posting this wonderful video.
Thanks for the kind words. The cardinal RG has amazing range. I fly Steinbach to Toronto on less then 1 tank with still 1 hour of reserve left (51 gal used of 60). The stop was a leg stretch and bathroom break (we topped up for fuel regardless) but i have 7 hours range and just under 1000nm on 1 tank. Santa Lucia is great pizza and the airliner is on my bucket list to go, the RG has small tires and the Airliner has limited condition reporting so never sure if the grass is dry and cut or long and wet. Thanks for watching.
Beautiful plane. Nicely produced video incl. music. Great trans. from IFR to visual. Lucky friend! Would love to visit Thompson. 👍🏻👍🏻
Thanks for the comments. Was a fun flight, wish we had more time on the ground but this was a PICKUP mission.
Great video. Thank you.
Beautiful. Loved the mix of views, conversation, aviation related explanations and music. Very engaging and inspiring video.
Had my niece, nephew on board hence the explanations, So much smoke but still managed to get some great memories.
The wing mounted camera is fantastic.
@@PaulMartin-x9q I like that it's just turn on and hit record while flying. You never miss anything because it records EVERYTHING in all directions, however, it's a massive pile of work months latter when editing and choosing what to look at where to zoom in on etc. Takes lots of time in the editing process but pretty hard to beat. I will be posting some of the footage in 360VR so anyone with a VR headset can ride on the wing and they choose where to look (if they aren't afraid of heights, lol).
What an AMAZING 3-part series Gil! Thank you for sharing this. I really love the 177 RG, such an amazing machine.
Thanks for the kind words. Blue water was fantastic to view from above the clouds.
A beautiful aircraft well flown. Thank you Gil.
I was flying in the area then too, got some good pics of the island of Morris Mb. Water was high around home too! ruclips.net/video/jRWo_dRcVrA/видео.html
I have time in IBA, I went up to Harv's for some transition training when I bought my RV6. Pretty sure I've seen that Cardinal too :) ruclips.net/video/gZB0Eg90Nvk/видео.html
I believe we briefly met at the Steinbach fly in event. Seen your videos also. IBA is great, did my aerobatics training in that. FUN. Too bad the Cardinal can't do aerobatics... first world problems.
always nice to see visitors from the west touring over home turf. Trained at YSN in the late 70s so I have many hours over the Falls, saw it go from altitude free-for-all to the special procedures required now. Too bad you didn't get over Hogtown; I've also flown there frequently from the days it was free to park at YTZ, hop on the ferry to catch a Jays or Leafs game, and blasting off over the beautiful city lights at night, beating the traffic home, to nowadays where it becomes a big budget flight just to park for a day. 🙄
Thanks for the comments, had checked NOTAMS prior to the flight but with the viz dropping made sense to not have prairie folks flying close the to sky scrappers, lol.
Nice video. CYSP sure is a fuel life saver when rounding the corner in Ontario. We cannot lose that option. I’ve never seen anyone at Marathon though; it always feels like entering A Quiet Place, if you’ve seen that movie. 😉
Not many landing options along that route and agree, Marathon, Wawa are nice places to stop as the half way point.
I can say only one word, WOW
Two words, "Thank You"
What under wing camera are you using? How is it mounted? How is it controlled from the cockpit? I have a 177rg and would like to try one. Thanks!
I am using the Insta 360X3 which is held in place using a small Sony Action cam bracket screwed into the same holes the Jack Pads Use. I can turn the camera on / off remotely using my iPhone and the free App. PLEASE NOTE, that camera records everything in all directions which is amazing but TONS of work in the editing process. Unless you are ready to export large files, pick and choose which angle to show when, it's lots of work. Worth it in my opion but still lots of work.
Super !!!
What brand and model camera are you using under your left wing, please?
Insta 360 X3 screwed into the under wing jack point. Easy, just hit record and fly, however TONS of work in the editing because you have to frame each clip afterwards.
I love this video as I do all of your video's Gil. I'm going to oppose the others and tell you that I also love the music. Thank you for sharing your flight adventures. I really love the Cardinal 177, it is such an amazing plane with amazing capabilities.
Thanks so much for the kind words. Truth be told, my passengers and I are French so when we were not chatting with ATC it was all in french so not much to listen to. I just wanted to capture the beauty of flight. I do love listening to the ATC versions so when i do record them they will be in there. I have dozens more videos in the edit process.
Nice RG and video 👍. Mine is a 75. It looks like you're using the Insta-360. What mount do you use to keep it secure? I was looking at the Redbird wingtips last year at Oshkosh. As of this year I still don't think they have the STC. Also, there's a lot of extra wiring that needs to be done. I don't mind tge music, but maybe fade it out when there's radio chatter? Keep up the nice work. 👍
Yes, using the Insta 360 with the small plastic receiver bracket screwed into the Jack Pad locations. Easy to put on and super solid.
@@gogilgauok, I'll have to look for that attachment. BTW, what do you use for editing software? I just retired from the Air Force doing Video production (puvlic affairs) and got kinda spoiled with AVID Media Composer.
Totally agree with Gerardo below. Dump the music. Otherwise nice video of your trip.
Great video, LOVED the music choices. 😉 BTW I really dig your aircraft registration, Man! 👍
Thanks, was so lucky when i was searching available letters (only get to choose the last 3), sure enough my name and initials!... Pretty easy to know who's is Gil's plane
Nice Cardinal, nice flight, Why dont You spare the music on video and leave radio comunications instead
Simple. Most of these flights occur where there is no ATC and no radio chatter, often quiet for 20 minutes. The 360 wing camera and cockpit views have no useable audio. I often record cockpit audio to my phone using Bluetooth direct from the audio panel but this chatter often does not match where there is nice scenery. Many times i speed up the video to keep the footage tighter and less boring, this then instantly makes any audio i have out of sync with the picture. I keep cockpit audio in some of my more technical flying videos like Departing from Sedona Airport.
@@gogilgau I wouldn't mind hearing the cockpit chatter during ground ops, takeoff and landing. Some tunes in cruise is cool. PS My Warrior meets my needs right now but given the funds I'd have a Cardinal in a heartbeat.
@@rickunruh8132 Warriors are fun also. My good buddy has an archer II and we fly together lots, just got back from Prince Rupert BC, was roughly 3100nm trip. On the way flew from Courtenay airpark in BC back to my home base in Steinbach Manitoba (8 hours of flying and 67 gallons!) my tanks are 60, so ALMOST 1 tank of gas to cross half of North America, Cardinal is really good on gas.
Nice Cardinal
First! 😅 Love your videos!
Thanks, i am also a videographer / editor so i do all these videos for myself but only recently decided to share them online. I always use copyright music in my videos which youtube sometimes blocks but when it allows i will continue to share them. Just fun to relive the moments on the cloudy days or when i'm old and not flying anymore, i will relive the moments, thanks for watching.
Like the video but the background music ruined it

Nice relaxing music...getting ready to do this same trip Monday. Which corridor did you like best?
@@ClearedApproach24 Only had time to do the dragon corridor. We were on our way back towards Santa Fe area for the night. If we would of had the time, i would of zig zagged all the corridors before proceeding. Enjoy and fly safe.
Really nice panel! Thanks for the video scrub and voice over. Got to see a lot in a small amount of time.
One of the most beautiful GA vudeo I ever seen, the senaries are unbelievabl, very nice flight, I enjoyed every minute, great job. All the best and best wishes ❤.
Great video...360 cam is beutiful.
I loved all the sequential videos of this trip to the southwest, however part 4 was just epic Gil! The majesty of Monument Valley with your video setup and editing was just superb. Loved the music selections as always. Time to take our Cardinal out that way, however I would like to know your choice of 360 camera under the left wing? What time of year was this trip? Bluest skies. Video of tail shot flying away from the buttes was both vivid and serene. Thanks!
Thanks for the kind words, the flight was late march last year and we had our own adventures climbing to 14.5K to cross the mountains but stay below icing. I use the Insta 360X3 under the wing as it provides me simplicity of just hit record and focus on my flying and after when i'm on the ground i choose and frame the shots i want. I record the cockpit audio using my iPhone "VOICE MEMO" feature as it can pull off the blue tooth audio from the Garmin audio panel. Enjoy your cardinal!
Awesome landscape...Great music...thx
I have the same plane. Which ipad size and Mount do youbhave?
Regular size iPad and the Ram Yoke mount system. When i went with G3X i no longer have old, analog gauges on the lower portion of the panel so iPad blocks nothing.
Thanks for sharing. Very inspiring!
Appreciate the kind words
That part of the country is our favorite. As I have watched the videos of Sedona, the GC, and Monument Valley from the perspective of the airplane I can only think of two words....Stunning and Unforgiving
My thoughts exactly if i had an Engine out!
Great video!!! Love it!! I do have to ask, are the police helicopters really escorting you? Or did you just happen to catch them flying along in your direction to Sedona? I really love your Cessna 177 RG. I've been on the lookout for a plane but hadn't given the 177 much thought as we don't often hear about this plane as regularly as the 172 and 182. Looking forward to watching #3 and #4.
Was chatting with the officers in the FBO, they were just looking for a good place to stop and have supper. I told we were headed to Sedona, they said Great idea and they followed us there. Just fun. 177's were only made for 10 years but if you research them you will fall in love. 4' wide cabin inside, 4' wide doors that open 90 degrees each side, 140 knots TAS on 8.5 GPH, 60 gallon tanks with just under 1000 nm Range. Wing is 1 foot further back so you can see up and down just as easy. Very fast controls, a real sports sedan. This guys video sums it up. ruclips.net/video/iBpMnSYm0Jc/видео.htmlsi=z1DtnttAMi7wUUuq
Pictures and video just don't do it justice! Nice avionics! I like the Cardinal RGs.
Mr. Gauthier, is there a way for me to use 10 seconds of your video for a family history video I'm making? My brother disappeared (presumed dead) in a rented Cessna 177 Cardinal RG and your video would make that section of our history much more authentic. Please let me know. Thank you. @craigreiss9466
Sure, not a problem. Sorry for your loss.
Wow! Super photography (and music). Would love to see the camera mount you are using. It's amazing how the early pioneers coped with such a vast and rugged country!
Superbe photography! I would love to see the camera mount you are using!
Thanks, i use a Insta 360X3 on the wing, Sony Action cam on the ceiling inside and i use the Garmin Bluetooth to record the intercom audio directly to my iPhone using "voice Memo", works great.
The wing camera is using the small plastic helmet mount bracket included with my Sony action camera. I drilled two holes into it and it screws directly into the mounting Jack stand spots in the wing of the RG. I then just click the camera into plate when needed and leave that small receiving bracket on the plane the rest of the time.
Nice job. One thing she needs to repeat the airport name at the end of her call for a non tower airport.
Enjoyed the flight, thanks for taking me along.
Super | Very Nice !!! It just doesn't get any better than doing what you love with the one you love. Trinquons la belle vie, les future vols, et vous deux!
Nice glass in that Cardinal !
I plan on keeping this plane a LONG time so i wanted to make it exactly the way i wanted it, very happy with the results. Thanks
The registration was a big hint that this was "his" plane.
@@rickunruh8132 Yeah I got that. Thanks.
Great video! I have a 75RG and was over that area back in January but we landed in Moab. What 360 camera and mount do you have? Also, how is the scene selection done? In flight or in "post production"? Only had my plane for a couple of years but it's probably my forever airplane 😃.
Cardinals are great, pretty hard to replace. I use the Insta 360X3 on the wing screwed into the jack stand pad locations. The 360 is an amazing tool, you only need to hit record when you want to capture anything, all the work is done after in post production. So it's a camera that adds TONS of time in the editing process but the unlimited ability to pan, zoom, re-frame, crop, rotate allows for some amazing shots after. Tons of work but if your ok with editing and creating shots after, buy one, otherwise, you will have Gigs of footage and no patience to sort it out.
@@gogilgauHi Gil and thank you for the reply. OF course! The Jack Stand pad holes! I was thinking the wing tiedown but that seems way better. I'll definitely look at the insta 360. Is it a newer version and do your have external power or does it run long enough? I retired last year and did video production for Space Systems Command and used AVID Media Composer. I just need to find another edit software that I can be "friends with".
@@peteranninos2506 I am using the Insta 360 version X3, about a year old. I didn't bother running power to the camera for two reasons. 1 - Camera can be remotely turned on / off from my phone while inside the plane so only turn it on / off at key moment. #2 - Raw files are quite large and need to be stitched using their insta 360 software, takes many hours to render and now double the file sizes again. As an editor (i use Final Cut pro) but used Avid also, i just grab the key clips and choose the pan, tilt, zoom, rotation as i wish in my editor, Takes tons of time but results are amazing. Long story short, last thing you want is 3 hours of 360 footage to transfer, convert and browse.
Hi Gil and thank you again. I'll definitely have a look at that camera and be prepared for some pretty big files! We have Adobe premiere and Sony Vegas at our local TV (P.E.G.) station where I run it for free. I'll have to learn one of those. Keep up the interesting videos! They give me inspiration 😃.
Great shots of Oak Creek Canyon, Meteor Crater, Flag, Mt. Humphrey, San Fransisco Peaks and Sedona, and great choice of music with Show me!
Thanks for pointing some of those out, flew over them but didn't know all of them. Great trip!
