    Hi Mike. Jim from Madrid, Spain (a fellow artist and a New Yorker expat living abroad). Just found you in RUclips and I subscribed. I'm mainly (my passion) a wildlife and nature artist (in watercolor and gouache), though I also do urban sketching when I go out (I'm always drawing and painting). Luckily for me since I live in Spain, I can buy at very reasonable prices Escoda Brushes (it's the only brand I use and - disclaimer - I have nothing to do with the company or anything). In my personal opinion, Escoda brushes are one of the best in the world and their very good prices here in Spain (Since it's a Spanish company) makes it difficult to buy any other brand (usually 30% - 70% more expensive, such as Da Vinci, Raphael, Rosemary & Co., etc., and forget about trying to buy any US made brushes such as Princeton or Silver Black Velvet, because due to logistic costs and import&export taxes it just doesn't make any sense at all, and Escoda Brushes are extremely good). As per the brushes I like to use (in case it may help others): 1. Mops/Quills: Escoda Acuario (and the Gold series dine with Zbukvic - I use a #20 & #12) are pure Petit He is and they have the best fine point I've seen on a pure hair squirrel brush. They are just amazing! Their synthetic line which is amazingly good imititating squirrel hair (Ultimo) is excellent too (in my opinion much better than the synthetic versions of Princeton and Silver Black Velvet, for example). I use a #12 Travel Brush & Cats Tongue 1" inch. 2. Workhorse brushes: the Reserva line (real Kolinski natural hair - I have a #10 Travel Brush) are amazing but their synthetic line (Versatil). Their Versatil synthetic line of brushes is the best ones I've used that truly resemble real Kolinsky sable. They're incredible. I use a #14 & #10. 3. Finer details: here you have several lines of synthetic brushes that are very good: 3.1. Perla (white Toray): their sift and springy with a real fine point. I use a #12, #8 & #0 for fine details and a #10 Travel Brush. 3.2 - Prado: these are also very good for finer details. I use a #6 when needed. 3.3. Barroco - I use these more as Flat and Angled Brushes (#16 & #10). They hold a good amount of water and pigment and they are semisoft so you can also use them for more detailed work. Besides these they have many other excellent lines of brushes and they are all made by hand in their factory in Barcelona (I had the pleasure to visit in 2023 and it's just amazing the care and how they make them). I also use Daniel Smith and Windsor & Newton artist grade watercolors and mainly Arches 100% cotton paper because here in Spain it's extremely accessible and economical (it's a French company and no import/export taxes within the EU). Well, sorry for the extensive message but I hope my personal experience may help others, and thank you for sharing... I'll keep on watching your channel. Cheers from Sunny Spain! 😁👍😎✌

      Hi Jim! Thanks for the review on those brushes. I use a lot of the same ones as seen in my paper / brushes explained video. I don’t usually use the sable brushes as I find them too soft. I have a couple flat brushes but rarely use them, one is an escoda Versatil. Happy Painting!

    I thoroughly enjoyed this video. Ive taken so many pics as I travel that highway on vacation, with the intent to paint it one day. This scene is even better from high above. Every line and shape lends to a good painting subject. I do like how you share your thoughts as you paint. Ive painted in oils for years, and recently bought watercolors to give it a shot. Its a whole different thinking process, so I appreciate watching and listening. BTW Im SO OLD that I remember a time when the Okanagan was all orchards, and not just that...a lot of the fruit trees were huge, like ours near Naramata before they were replaced by "dwarf" trees for easier picking. My memories of spring with the big trees blossoming in white and pink, baby animals being born, with bees buzzing everywhere, are quite something. Even as a typical kid who probably didnt appreciate much, I knew I was living in a special time and place. I probably didnt know the word surreal at the time, but thats what spring was like there.

    • @watercolourlandscape
      @watercolourlandscape Год назад

      Thanks very much Mark! Yes!! I remember the big old fruit trees, a lot of them cut down to be replaced with grape vines. I helped a neighbour cut down some of his old cherry orchard, beautiful trees and the best fruit were at the top, hard to reach! So much to paint. This spot above Vaseux lake is sensory overload when you get up there. So many painting compositions to choose from and simplification is a must! Welcome to my tutorial channel! There are some videos on here that will teach you watercolour skills that took me years to figure out. You’ll get used to watercolour quickly as long as you paint, paint and paint! Using good quality paper is probably the most important thing. Have fun! I appreciate the comment and memories! Regards, Mike

      @@watercolourlandscape Thanks Mike. I do plan to keep at it with watercolor. Im not sure it'll replace oils, as I tend to enjoy large canvasses, but its nice to have right in front of me and the discovery process of a new way of expressing a scene is exciting to me. Ive always loved watching watercolorists. Maybe I can become one! Cheers.

    I like your idea of looking at this like a lot of little paintings, so it's not so intimidating. You seem to paint everything with a relaxed confidence, so I wonder if there is any subject matter that you find challenging? I love the way this turned out. I really like the way the shadow falls across the bottom of the "Oliver" sign. Thanks as always for sharing this project and talking us through it!

    • @watercolourlandscape
      @watercolourlandscape Год назад

      Thanks very much! I appreciate you taking the time to leave a comment . A lot of these painting I film are challenging but if we deal with the subject matter in a way that we study it and make a plan on how to paint it, it becomes a lot easier when you start painting. All these paintings are simply a subject matter, decide what the focus will be, simplify complex things to just shapes, background, middle-ground and foreground. Make a plan on how you will paint each section, how to tie it all together. The easiest paintings to see are plein-air but they are also the most difficult to finish in the sun, wind, passers by asking questions and so on. I think I have 4 plein-air paintings I need to finish, some from the videos and I always think, hey if it doesn’t work out, I have a new sheet of paper I can start a new painting on. Let’s paint! Looking forward to the next motivational subject and a new tutorial! Feel free to post in our community section of the channel, I would love to see your art. 🖐🏼😊 Mike

    Bill Alexander! Bob Ross's predecessor. He's one of the reasons I paint. I break down full sheets of paper, stretch them and make my own blocks with PVA glue. Great video.

    • @watercolourlandscape
      @watercolourlandscape Год назад

      Yes! Bill Alexander, I forgot his name. 😊🖐🏼🥇 I’ve been using green painters tape to hold the individual sheets down. I used to paint on the blocks but moisture in very wet paintings get into the next or several sheets and I was ending up with surfaces that were not flat. Then individual sheets do get a bit wavy sometimes if I un-tape them too soon so I flatten them by misting the back of the paintings and press them in a watercolour paper “sandwich” and something heavy on top until they dry overnight. Works well! Great idea making your own blocks! Thanks for taking the time to leave a comment, cheers, Mike

      @@watercolourlandscape thanks Mike. I have rejected all other forms of social media - too much funny business and manipulation sadly

    Beautiful location beautiful painting I love that I'm able to understand where you're going with it. With other artists it's hard for me to visualize what the random lines are going to turn into. Great instruction too. Thank you🎉

      Thanks so much for watching and your comment! It’s nice to have the preliminary drawing marks, more than anything, they are position markers to make sure elements of the painting end up at the right spot. 😊🖐🏼 I hope you have time to give this one a try. I’ll look at it again and think I’ll add more colour. I have to build a shade for my easel so the bright sun is not on the painting. It makes it difficult to see if the colours are strong enough. Happy painting!

      Thanks so much Gina! Very generous of you 😊🖐🏼. I’m having a lot of fun with these tutorials! I’m deciding on the next one now and hopefully I will film and paint it this afternoon. A rural road with a nice little building and country house. Maybe I should paint it on a big half sheet of paper! Thanks again, much appreciated.
