    My first bike as well. KZ550, black with the coffin tank. I was 17 at the time and everyone wanted my bike! I had guys on the Honda SS trying to trade me and buy it outright but I wouldn't budge. We would ride from Ventura to Mulholland and then carve up the canyon. The only mod it had was the 4 into one exhaust and it screamed. I hit 125mph with a passenger on the back and it still had power to spare. Just an amazing bike all around. From there I've had a "69 Triumph Bonneville, various Japanese bikes, various Harleys and a lifetime of good riding. This was one of the best, most exciting and fun bikes I've ever owned.

    This was my first motorcycle. Bought it with 5349 miles on the clock in 1990. It was a bulletproof ride for two years and just over 100k miles. I replaced plenty of chains, sprockets, tires, the headlight, even the front brake master cylibder due to corrosion. But I never once had any issues with the engine. It may not have been as powerful as my next bike, an 86 Radian, but it was more comfortable and better in every other conceivable way. Happy riding!

    Old guy here. Love the project. Love the videos but as an owner of several Kawasaki’s from that era (favourite was an ‘82 GPZ 550) I was shouting at the screen “pull in the clutch!” and chuckling when you were checking the wiring. Also I think the petcock pointing down is the reserve tank. (I think - check it first.) You will love the bike, I am jealous.

    Got one of these recently and I absolutely love it. So fun to ride and a perfect to learn on. Sure you can get a little 250cc but you grow out of those so fast. This bike is no slouch. It's fast to the point where it's exciting, but not too fast that it's scary. Amazing how these are 40 years old and still able to run with a little TLC.

    Is there not more to this story? This video is from 2018 and it is now 2020 - what happened with the Kawasaki? Interesting as I just inherited similar because of an inheritance a 1984 550 LTD shaft drive that had been sitting in a shed for 23 years so just beginning on mine.

  • @YTjndallas
    @YTjndallas 5 лет назад

    This bike was a one-owner barn find. You’re destroying a very rare and valuable bike in great condition. You could’ve cleaned it up and sold it for $4-$5k. Very sad. 😢😢 That super clean tank alone is worth $350-$400.

  • @YTjndallas
    @YTjndallas 5 лет назад

    Chopping an ‘83 Kz with 2,000 miles is sacrilege. You obviously had no idea what you had, or the value of it. Very sad. 😢

    If anyone else is trying to start an old motorcycle, there's a couple things in this video that I wouldn't do. For one, I would take all the spark plugs out after changing the oil and the gas Etc and turn the engine over with the spark plugs out to get some oil up to the cams. And she cranks on that 3/8 ratchet putting the spark plug in! I'm surprised she didn't strip the threads. Never tighten spark plugs in an aluminum head really tight, just snug them. Burn everything out of it at this point it was probably just running on the choke, and the bike would never idle without the choke on because the Jets are probably clogged with dry gas. Hopefully the last owner drained the gas out of the carbs but people rarely do that. I had a 81 GPZ 550 and it was a great bike.

    As a KZ550 owner, I can verify that the key is the one for the gas tank as well as everything else, it’s just that the locking mechanism is seized. It happened to me too. I just soaked some WD-40 in the hole and twisted it until it budged. But I waited about 30 minutes to an hour before doing it.

    Nice bike! -- One of the bikes I regularly drool over is this bike's cousin, the GPz550. Is it difficult to pull the bowls from the carbs? That's the only thing I would've done in addition to what you showed us.

    I am super excited to see what you end up getting. My husband and I have an 19' Airstream and we love it. It's a Flying Cloud and it is newer so it's wider but it is plenty of space. Originally we thought that we would get a bigger one when we go full time but after 3 years we are pretty confident that 19' is more than enough. It is very easy to get around and we fit almost everywhere. We pull with a RAM. We found that towing is not the issue, it is being able to stop your trailer when going down steep inclines. Definitely want engine brakes and real power. We learned the frightening way. We will keep watching.

    Do not change oil of a cold engine, the bad gunk that is in it will not mix with the oil and therefore stay in the engine.

    There is no way that it’s been sitting for 20 years untouched. That gas tank will gel up and even crystalized. Carb will be sticky and and the jets holes will be plugged. Your engine oil gonna be thick too. Someone did some TLC recently. I’ve owned few old bikes and barn finds and been through all of that.

    I have the exact same bike. It had 7k when I bought it, not running, needed carb cleaning. Now 2 years and 4k miles later it runs great, and is a lot of fun to ride. Carbs need cleaning it you want it to run and pull smoothly- the CV (constant vacuum) carbs have three different fueling circuits (idle, low and 3/4+ throttle) each requires that the fuel go through small holes. If it sputters or doesn't run on all cylinders that's where I would look. I would pick up the Clymer manual for the kawasaki 550's, with the information on the later models. It contains a ton of useful information. A good parts supply is through the Z1 Enterprises website. Good luck, and your bike looks awesome BTW!!!

    IMO If you're gonna get a Harley anyway I'd just keep it stock...with 2K miles and original paint it doesn't deserve to be chopped into a cafe racer or scrambler

      I totally agree in keep it stock and if anything continue restoration. Overall - these bikes from the 70's and moving into the 80's seem to be coming up in value for one thing but just a complete shame as well as wrong to chop it and try make it into something that it is not. Personal preference but I would take this any day over any Harley model new or old.
