    What on earth is this female narrator saying, in her dreadful, Northern working-class accent? Could the makers of this video not have found a person who could speak civilized, decent, upper-class, proper English? Not this guttural, common, working-class uncivilized speech. This sort of thing makes me ashamed to be British.

    Hello and thanks for the pleasant walkabout. The stone masons 'arrow' mark @21:32 is interesting - All British Army equipment such as blankets, clothing, furniture, household pots and pans etc. have this 'arrow' mark to help identify the items as being of military issue. Convicts are often depicted with this same logo on their prison uniforms.

      I couldn't help but notice that THE stone in question is clearly 'less weathered' than the rest. As odd as it sounds and for reasons unknown, someone it appears has gone to the time and effort of installing these new bits relatively recent.

    Thank you so much for sharing this walk, I've been researching this exact part of the Chequerbent line trying to identify where shafts 1 and 2 were for the Hulton Colliery at Chequerbent - part of the same Hulton family-owned mines as Pretoria (shafts 3 and 4) but Hulton Colliery shafts 1 and 2 were apparently not linked to the Pretoria workings underground (otherwise, I guess, could have been used as access/evacuation during the Pretoria disaster #sad). I'm researching because my grt-grandfather was a miner in 'Hulton Colliery, Chequerbent' as detailed on the 1921 census. The census is fascinating because he listed himself as a Coal Hewer and gave the Mining Co name and address at Chequerbent as his work location, but then says (underlined) 'On Strike'. I'm aware there were mining strikes at Hulton as relations didn't seem to be good in general, but haven't been able to find details of a strike in 1921. I believe Hulton Colliery shafts 1 and 2 may have been where the group of trees was on the right on your snow-covered shot of the curve in the trackbed? But if anyone can advise I'd love to know ... would just love to be able to go and stand in my grt-grandfather's 'footprints'.

    • @walkinglosthistory
      @walkinglosthistory 3 месяца назад

      Hi ,thanks for the comment , I've just looked at the old maps again it looks like the Hulton Colliery 1 & 2 is as you thought near the clump of trees it was quite close to the railway line , the chequerbent colliery 1 & 2 backed onto what was once Brancker Street with the look of it ,If I remember we walked away from Chorley Road along the footpath and this was on our right . . We are glad it may have helped you in your quest to find the location of where your Grt Grand farther worked . The Hulton family owned quite a few mines in the area looking at the old maps . Not sure if you use them but National Library of Scotland let you view various maps which may help you they can be found at maps.nls.uk/geo/explore/#zoom=17.0&lat=53.54337&lon=-2.49800&layers=6&b=1&o=60 Thanks again for the comment and good luck David & Shell

    Enjoyed watching this as my husband worked for Rossendale Borough Council as a civil engineer. It was his job to survey these tunnels to see if a walkway could be made through. It was decided after the survey that one of the tunnels was unsafe so it was blocked up at either end. The walkway through the other tunnel was made after repairs were carried out to the structure where needed. This was over 30 years ago. Since then tunnel number three was also opened up and made safe to allow the cycleway to run through much more recently.

    Gosh - so many abandoned buildings. Almost like a village. So many memories would have been made in those places. Sad to see them all in such a state now Just incredible that a sawmill is just there as it was more or less left!! Like you, why not just let things be and leave in situ - you don’t have to break everything 😡 That was one amazing hike.

      Evening Dave & Sue , hope your both well , yes we didn't realise there was an abandoned farm as well . Its such a shame they are in the way they are now but I guess there was no one to take them over . The Saw mill was the jewel in the crown ,it was like stepping back in time , its sad that people feel the need to destroy abandoned buildings , its down to a complete lack of respect for other peoples property . Hope you had a great weekend David & Shell

    Absolutely love this walk, you can feel the history of the place, such beautiful coastline and you can imagine the steam railway 🚂. Thank you for letting me share your walk.
