Pipe Major John Recknagel's (4th) Farewell to the Atlanta Pipe Band
Просмотров 1612 года назад
An original 6/8 March that I wrote to honor my long-time teacher and Pipe Major to celebrate his 4th time retiring from being the band's PM. Played at the Battle of Bayou bagpipe competition. I took 1st place and an AGL for this event.
Lament for Jimmy McIntosh
Просмотров 1892 года назад
This is an original piobaireachd, composed by my friend, Corbin McKinnon, for Jimmy McIntosh, a piobaireachd great who taught many pipers in the Eastern US, including Corbin and me. Corbin is blind and composed this tune completely in his head. I was honored to have the opportunity to transcribe the music for him, so that others can also learn and play it. The tune is lovely but irregular in st...

A trip near the beach is incomplete without some piobaireachd! Filmed near Caligny Beach at Hilton Head Island, SC. It was ~40 degrees and very windy, so the playing suffered some but I was very happy to get a tune out! This tune is "One of the Cragich" tunes from the Campbell Canntaireachd manuscript, but was essentially lost to time and was never played nor published in standard notation in a...

Cabar Feidh Gu Brath - piobaireachd by the stream
Просмотров 903 года назад
Came across this lovely spot by the creek in Valle Crucis, North Carolina and decided I needed to play a tune there. Cabar Feidh Gu Brath (stag horns forever, the motto of the Seaforth Highlanders) by Donald MacLeod. Disclaimer I learned this tune less than 24 hours before this recording so it is by no means perfect, but I am happy with this recording in such a lovely setting.

I played this piob in my Grade 3 piob contests. Pretty much the pacing here is what I was taught. Needless to say: still... soothing. Almost makes me want to play this nice tune on the pipes, again.
Jim was a great représentant of the Balmoral School.A man who devoted his life to teach pibroch.
Awesome Sam!
Played too slow,it is a salut not a lament ! It lack of life, too clinical.
Nice tune Sam, trying (and failing) to locate the music for it?
adjust playback speed to .5 and it's still miles off, but kind of in the same universe as a Crunluath?
You will note that in Canntaireachd the singer modulates the volume of their voice while the drone sounds steadily in the background. The volume of the 'chanter' does not vary like the human voice does and there are no "pauses" you can point to, except on notes. Fine points and 'inflections' conveyed in this manner can be extremely 'individual' while still holding to traditional form. While the written music may appear uniform, everything about it is, in its own way, "unique". Cha till MacCruimen . Ceol Mor is a lifetime study that fades back into the mists of time but lives in the hearts of its practitioners. It can humble 'mony a piper' and send them back to 'the Light music'. I'd suggest listening to The Big Music Society for an introduction. You'll find them on RUclips Jack lee is your Man among others.
Nice playing Sam Look forward to seeing you at games this year!
Nice march and a nice and deserved tribute. (Btw, Sam, is that the new technique for locking in tenors?)
How embarrassing, I was so cold and just trying to get the event over with; didn't notice the funky tenors until I saw a comment on the judge sheet!
Well done. Beautiful piece. In a flower-strewn field, on a rainy day, you played a big song for wee Jimmy.
excellent memorandum for Jimmy - thank you
Nice!
Is the buzz in the background feedback from the sound system or a simulated drone?
100% certain that is a simulated drone. It's similar to how drone systems are used in Indian music.

Hi! According to the sheet music “o” and “a” in the first bar are of the same length. Why is “a” longer when you sing it?
Great question! Piobaireachd does not really have a "meter--" you can't play with a metronome, or tap your foot to it. So, any attempt to write it on sheet music is only approximation, and can't give a good understanding of how long each note should be played. That's why it's important to work with a teacher and/or listen to a recording when trying to learn!
I’ve got your point but it seems confusing, because the particular sheet music which you use definitely and deliberately has its peculiar meter (first bar has dotted notes and 1/16 “a”). It seems that the following sheet music fits better with your singing: ruclips.net/video/fLsXa4c-atk/видео.html Would really like to know your opinion on that.

Hey Sam! Thanks so much for posting this! It’s truly beautiful, but if I may make one small suggestion? The tempo in the variations should increase ever so slightly (about 3%) between urlar and singling, and again to the doubling, then slow slightly to the crib singling, and increase again. It’s very a very nuanced tune and to my ears you nailed the breabach in the crunluath variations. Keep up the good work! I look forward to hearing more of these!
I’ve listened to this about 25 times in the last week along with listening to it on the pipes an equal number of times. Just now I was trying to write it out so I can learn to sing it and it seems like in the second measure of the fourth bar there are two different syllables sung for the same note. Che appears to be E following a G grace note and later in that measure Hi looks to be sung to the same note. Is there an easy explanation for that? I’m interested in learning canntaireachd but I’m having difficulty finding resources for a beginner
Hey! If you'd like the full transcript of the "lyrics," they're in the description, along with a link to the sheet music I made to go with it. For the different notes: the vowel "E" is for the note E on the chanter. The ch- to make "Che" adds the G grace note in front of it. For introductory cadences, the G grace-note and E take the syllable "Hi-" and are combined with the note they are going to-- in this case "en" for the low A. Other examples would be a cadence to B- (Hi+Hio) or a cadence to E- (Hi+Ho). An interesting note to further confuse things is that the H- prefix on "Hio" and "Ho" usually is for a G grace note, but in introductory cadences, they represent the D grace note. So a cadence to D would be Hi+a, since there's no D grace note, and cadences to A can take the form of either Hi+en *or* Hi+hin, depending on if there is a D grace note in the cadence, which varies by tune for cadences on Low A. Hope this helps!
@@samcwiley awesome thanks! I always forget to expand the decryption down when I’m watching on my phone. Thanks for the explanation too. I can’t wait to dig deeper into this
Playing this on pipes and I love having this to listen to as inspiration. Thanks for posting!!
Impressive. Really special
Sounds great! I have been interested in learning Canntaireachd. Where did you learn or how did you learn.? Online, in person? Thanks for video.
Glad you liked it! I have been learning online, though I think I am going to make an instructional video at some pointt
