Recorded in June 2024 at Otmoor Nature Reserve, Oxfordshire. After a few mornings visiting the reserve, I located a tree where this bird liked to sit and sing. I had been struggling to record it's song as it sings short, intermittent phrases. On this occasion, I struck gold though! You can also hear several other birds in the background, including prominant curlew and red shank.

I first learnt of this bird at Otmoor, and made this recording on the first morning I took my mics there. As the sun rose and its warmth reached my skin, it was an exciting moment to encounter a new bird sound to record.

Recorded in Northumberland at about 10:30 pm in mid March using my Zoom H4E and a Rode NT5 in my parabolic dish. Well what is this, the ark’s first amphibian? I don’t know much about frogs, but these guys were hanging out in our garden pond. They seem to be noisy for a week or two in March when the frog spawn shows up.

Recorded using my Zoom H4E and a Rode NT5 microphone in my parabolic dish. A lovely family walk at Moorlands Wood in York turned into an audio hunt for a nuthatch, and here are the trophies. Luckily my family were very patient with the long pauses and demands for complete silence! It was about 11:30 am on a Sunday, so there was a lot of child noise to contend with!

I was out listening for birds early one morning when I heard these two bugs chirping away in the short grass by the path, so for the first time found myself pointing my microphones at the ground.

Recorded in Oxford using my Zoom H5 and parabolic dish. There's something amazingly calming about listening to ducks quietly splashing around in the water. One of the lovely things to do with a parabolic dish is to point it at the water near to some birds like this, as you can hear in detail the ripples and waves caused by their movements that you would never otherwise hear.
