Welp, time to add a new chapter in this show.

Reading the comments shows how many people will die on the hill that this is better than the film version. The truth is that if this was the direction a movie would go in, it would be way too camp and over the top. If the film’s style of acting and direction were put on stage, it would be too dark and subtle. We can like both things, people (except George Hearn’s really poor London accent).

Very weird version. People keep trying to say it was intentional and it WASN"T. Some of the top votes are saying thing like "Johanna is supposed to be crazy" (No she isn't! She goes mad for a while in Act 2 when the judge puts her in the insane asylum, then she snaps out of it when Anthony comes for her). Another says that "Sondheim wrote her as a parody" HUH. Sondheim didn't write her character. He wrote the music and lyrics. Hugh Wheeler is the writer. Then another says "she's supposed to be mimicking a caged bird!". WHAT? The whole point of the song is that the birds sound beautiful. The birds and flutes are played/singing in key and she is all over the place. Someone else says "it's suppose to be funny because Anthony is attracted to it!" NO! If anything that shows how off she is. The script is written such that she sounds beautiful, why do you think literally EVERY OTHER ACTRESS to ever play the role did it that way? Then people are saying "Betsy Joslyn is a wonderful singer who knows what she's doing." This is literally her only big role. Stop acting like you've followed her whole career and are a fan. Most of her acting credits include being an understudy and standby. In fact that's how she got this role. She was in the chorus/ensemble at first and somehow took over the role after Sarah Rice left. It's just weird, of time, off key, "pitchy", overly operatic singing.

Not gonna lie. I hate this version of the song. She’s too pitchy, and I don’t like her portrayal of the character. Not impressed. I’ve heard WAY better renditions of this song.

So this was filmed during the show's national tour, and for whatever reason, the key for this song was raised when the show went on tour. I would LOVE to know why. If you compare this performance to the broadway bootleg easily findable on youtube, she sings the song in it's original key and she is able to tackle the phrasing and character with less effort at hitting the high notes. So yeah she's doing a lot here...because she's essentially playing this character on "Hard mode!"

These comments lol You don't have to add so much intensity/vibrato/"purposefully" sharp to show that the character is crazy. Sondheim knows how to do that through song as he did with Mrs Lovett's "Worst Pies in London" or Amy's "Not Getting Married Today" in Company. The insanity in this song is meant to be as subtle as its cluster chords. Sarah Rice as the original 1979 is more subdued, too.

Everyone hated on her because she took it to the extreme, but I still and ALWAYS respected that she could take it that far. Any soprano can just stand there and sing to a bird, but she truly captures the mad, manic state Johanna (and half of London) are in. I don’t like when Johanna is played as sedate.

The breath control is astonishing ... every phrase clear as a bell. Lovely work.

How she can sing in such a high tone is absolutely unbelievable. This is my favourite portrayal of Johanna without a doubt. Some other portrayals I saw were rather boring but this did not bore me a single second. Betsy Joslyn makes Johanna a very dynamic character. Her voice sounds almost identical to the bird noises in the background, which the whole point of the song. Johanna is like a caged bird so she sings like one. It would make no sense for her to be calm and demure with no hint of madness.

I'll never understand why she sang it this way for this taping - listen to the taping from the audience with the replacement cast on Bway, she sings it in-tune perfectly. She's doing it on purpose here.

I can taste the insanity in this performance -why would she sing sweetly? She's trapped !

People who keep saying "she's playing it the way she's supposed to." Um... actually she's not. You know how we know? Because Sarah Rice before her didn't play it like this and no Johanna since has played it like this. Or if they have, they've made the "crazy" an accent of the performance and not the whole and ONLY choice. Which is why this doesn't work. There's no dimension to the character. It's totally fine if you PREFER this performance, but it's not "the way it's supposed to be". It's the way Joslyn played it.

Only it shouldn't be "hilarious." I get that Joslyn really can sing, and I get that Johanna is supposed to be more than a trifle nutty, but Joslyn is really **waaayyy** overdoing it here--and to the detriment of the song. (When is she going to start rolling her eyeballs and drooling?) Other singers have managed to convey Johanna's instability, right here in this song, without murdering the song.
