In the early seventies in southern Illinois me, my brother and cousins would always camp out in the garden of the gods park for weeks at a time every summer . Dad and uncles rode motorcycles all thru there and we also fished. Us younguns found a small narrow cave that was loaded with stuff and junk that we brought to a little store and the owner would give us pop, candy and even ciggs for the stuff. He pleaded with us to bring it in, as much as we could so we did. Didn't know it then but all this stuff was Egyptian , we had or have no clue if it was real or home made. This lasted two summers in 73 and 74. The store owner died recently and we found out he left his family stacks of cash and property and get this, he has a collection of old artifacts from Egypt that is worth by some estimates worth over ten mill. I have from this place over 200 items we took from the cave and have been told by the university of Illinois and the university of Tennessee that they are not genuine but it sure does make me wonder why his is worth so much and mine aint worth a nickel 😮 and yes the cave is still there and almost impossible to get into and it is in fact empty.

As for being off limits today, it's more likely any sensitive equipment has been removed, and since the structure is no longer maintained, it is likely very dangerous to visitors. The restriction is there to protect you from you, as is the case with many abandoned structures, especially mines. Kind of a boring take, I know, but it's the most likely, I think. Dunkleosteus don't have teeth like in this stiil picture.... they did have jaws that worked in a similar way to scissors and were more like bone that teeth.... so all in all that is not a Dunkleosteus....

I have very hard time believing the dunkleosteus still lives. It lived some 380-360 million years ago, and was one of the very early jawed fish. That predates the dinosaurs by a huge amount of years.
