Yes they can and sometimes do. That is why you train and surf everyday. Then you have impacting the shelf. That is rock slab there. Often granite or lava tube.
Torn rotator cuff, dislocated both thumbs, separated ribcage cartilage, multiple reef cuts and scars, Achilles tendonitis, two disk bulges l4-l5-s1 vertebrae. Various other minor injuries.
